Prologue

*Third-Person POV*

If Coruscant had experienced any previous rainstorms, they were nothing compared to the one occurring tonight. Lightning flashed across the black, cloud-filled sky. Thunder boomed so loud that even the Ewoks on Endor could have heard it. And the rain- the rain was relentless.
Master Qui-Gon Jinn was returning from a mission in the Outer Rim Sieges, hurrying to the infamous Jedi Temple. He was eager to come home after so long, and to resume training his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
A sudden disturbance in the Force made the Jedi stop. He sensed someone, maybe a youngling, in pain, far below him. It sounded like they were sending a telepathic plea for help.
Qui-Gon landed his Star Fighter and climbed out, looking for whoever had sent him the plea. He felt the Force growing stronger as he approached a nearby alley, not far from a cantina, so he checked there. What he saw in the alley almost made him want to cry.
There, slumped against one of the walls, to his right, was a young who couldn't have been more than 6. Her long hair was thrown over one shoulder in a messy side braid, the rain plastering loose strands to her neck. She wore a blue long-sleeves tunic and black pants, which did little to cover the many bruises and cuts all over her body. Not a single part of her exposed skin wasn't bruised. Abrasions marked the right side of her face, and her left ankle looked like it could have been twisted or even broken. One of her hands was wrapped around her torso, the other hanging limply at her side. She was alive, but barely, it seemed.
Qui-Gon carefully scooped up the youngling in his arms and carried her back to his Star Fighter. He sat in the driver's seat, placing her head in his lap, and flew to the Jedi Temple.
As soon as he arrived, he rushed her to the Medbay, where she was looked over by healers. Aside from the obvious scrapes and bruises, two of her ribs were broken and her left ankle was sprained, and additionally, she had a mild concussion.

"Qui-Gon, we sensed a disturbance in the Force. Are you alright?" Mace Windu questioned, as he and Master Yoda entered the room.

Qui-Gon nodded. "I am fine, Master Windu," he replied.

"Who is this girl?" Master Windu inquired.

"This is Genevieve. I found her in an alleyway; she was beaten badly," said Qui-Gon, "She seemed to be speaking to me through the Force. She was barely breathing when I found her. And judging by the many bruises and scars on her body, I'd say she has been abused like this all her life."

Master Yoda hobbled over to the girl and put a hand on her forehead. "Much pain she is in. But very strong with her is the Force," he informed the other Jedi, "Decide what to do with her we must. Return her to where she was abused we cannot."

Master Windu looked at Genevieve and then at Qui-Gon. "I will perform a blood-test tomorrow, so we can get a midichlorian count for her. She will be trained in the Force, when she is old enough. In the meantime, Qui-Gon, we will leave her in your care," he said.
Qui-Gon nodded, and the Jedi prepared to leave.

"Good night, Qui-Gon," Master Windu said before they left, "And may the Force be with you."

"May the Force be with you," Qui-Gon echoed. Once the Jedi left, he looked down at the girl who was to be his "daughter". He took one of her small hands in his, rubbing gentle circles on her palm. "Don't worry. You will not be hurt again. I will protect you always," the Jedi Master whispered, as he planted a gentle kiss on her forehead. From that moment on, he treated her as his own daughter, guarding her with his life. Unfortunately, she wouldn't trust him. She wouldn't even speak to him.

The fear of being abused again had reduced her to a little mute girl, incapable of trust.
