THIRTY SIX ━━ the hanging tree
you can't stop a revolution,
only inflame it
— one republic
SITTING THERE IN THAT BEAUTIFUL QUARRY FELT completly wrong in Erin's head as she sat silently by herself a little while away from the others close by the crystal clear water.
After witnessing the destruction inflicted by the Capitol an aching was left in her heart. Would the Capitol do this to all the districts if they even showed a bit of support for the rebellion?
She didn't know but there was that nagging voice in the back of her head saying you know they will. You know they'll destroy everything.
Moments like this were the ones she wished Finnick was by her side, just being there would have eased her nerves. A linger touch to show her that he was there was all she wishes for at that moment as she stared at the clear water in front of her.
No one was talking, it was completly silent expect for the occasion birds cheerping and the whistling of the wind arouns them. No one really knew what to say after seeing district twelve in ruins.
The brunette slowly lifted her metal cantin to her lips, savoring the cold water as she took smal sips. And if she closed her eyes she could picture herself sitting on the beach back in district four on a hot summer day, just doing nothing with Alex and Finnick by her side.
But Erin opened her eyes again, and came face to face with the quiet quarry. She was not back in her home district and she wonderes if she would ever set foot there again.
The brunette woman turned her head when whistling sound and she looked where Katniss sat with Pollox. It appeared the ex-avox made the whistling as a mockingjay stood upon a rock behind them.
And like that the quietness was repaces by the sound of mockingbirds singing and repeating the action. And Erin smiled as she listened in wonder, a serene moment that no one could take from them, not even Snow.
Because even if Katniss wouldn't be able to win, someone else would take over. Just how the mockinjaya echoed the sound. They could take away the face of the rebellion but they could never take away the dream.
Erin watched curiously as Pollox pointed to his mouth and made some gestures that Katnissed understood after a moment. "You want me to sing?" She asked unsure.
Pollox smiled sweetly at Katniss as he nodded and waited for the girl on fire to oblige. The raven haired girl didn't do anything for a moment and turnes to lool at the water again before she slowly fulfilled Pollux wish.
"Are you, are you coming to the tree. Where they strung up a man they say who murdered three. Strange things have happened here, no stranger would it be. If we met at midnight in the hanging tree."
Erin tilted her head to the side, her dark hair falling to the side as she listened intensly, just like the other's were while Cressida urged for it to be filmed.
"Are you, are you coming to the tree. Where a dead man called out for his live to flee. Strange things have happened here, no stranger would it be. If we met at midnight in the hanging tree."
Erin pushed some stray pieces of hair behind her ear as she locked eyes with Alex from where he sat beside Gale. The two Benton siblings both thinking back to their deceases mother and how she would sing for them when loud thunderstorms rumbled over Four.
"Are you, are you coming to the tree where I told you to run, so we both be free. Strange things have happened here no stranger would it be. If we met at midnight in the hanging tree."
The brunette wrapped her arms around her knees as she rested her head on top of them, closing her eyes for a moment to take in Katniss soft voice.
"Are you, are you coming to the tree. Wear a necklace of hope side by side with me. Strange things have happened here no stanger would it be. If we met at midnight in the hanging tree.
A spark was lit, and the fire was spreading.
Erin felt somewhat at ease sitting back at district thirteen with Finnick by her side, there hands intertwined beneath the table while Alex sat silently acorss from them, focuing on his plate.
A couple table down, Katniss was sitting with her family, quietly talking with her little sister Primrose before she caught sight of Boggs walking to the table of the Mockingjay.
She watched confused as Katniss stood up ans followed after the dark skinned man but not before she caught her eye. They both felt it, something was wrong. Very wrong.
Her nagging feeling was proven only twenty minutes later when alarms blasted throughout the building, warning them.
Erin felt Finnick's hold tighten around her as the two stood up in a hurry, Alex not far behind as the oldest Benton casted a worried glance at his younger sister.
"This is a code red. Please remain calm and follow evacuation protocol."
The computer generated voice was on repeat as it talked above the loud warning alarm while every inhabitant of district 13 made their way through the hallways.
"Proceed to your nearest stairwell and descend to level fourty. Blast doors will be sealed in six minutes."
Erin worriedly looked at Finnick, the two quickly descending the stairs after the other people. "Did you see Katniss anywhere? Prim?" The brunette asked hurriedly looking around for the afor mentioned people.
"I don't know. We'll find them downstairs alright." Finnick gently pushed her forward. "They'll be downstairs. I promise."
The blue alarm lights flickered, making the situation all the more terrying when the normal light shut off and the building shook and screams rang out.
Erin clutched to Finnick as the two ducked in shock and surpise, scared ocean blue eyes meeting terrified hazel ones as the rumbling from outside continued and water fell down.
That's when panic ensued and people started to run and push passed each other. With wide eyes Erin looked around for her brother but he seemed to have been swallowed by the crowd.
"Alex!" She yelled out desperately. "Alex!"
"We have to go." Finnick pulled her along.
"But Alex-"
"He'll find us. He'll find you." Finnick assured her. "But we need to go now."
The two quickly entered level fourty and were directed further by soldiers just outside the doors that would soon be locked.
The large space was littered with beds and people hurrying about the room. But among the crowd, Erin locked eyes on a rushing Katniss as she came inside the bunker.
Not thinking, Erin let go of Finnick's hand and she quickly followed after Katniss. "Katniss!"
As she rounded the corner, she spotted the raven haired girl standing in front of her mother but the brunette didn't see Prim at all.
"She must still be on the stairs." She caught the conversation and her heart dropped.
"There was no one else on the stairs." Katniss voice was desperate and her grey eyes landed on Erin who was approaching them.
"What's wrong?!" Erin gripped the younger girl's shoulders. "Katniss?"
"She went back for the cat." Katniss suddenly exclaimed.
"What?" Erin furrowed her eyebrows trying to push passed Erin.
"The cat. Prim went to get the cat." Katniss finally managed to get passed Erin but the stubborn brunette went to follow after her.
"What are you doing?" Katniss shouted over her shoulder when she noticed Erin followig her.
"I'm helping you." She stated firmly, falling in step beside the raven haired girl.
"The doors close in two minutes." Katniss shook her head. "You should stay.
"No way, all the more reason for me to go. Two pairs of eyes can see more than one."
And so they left, running back up the stairs, time ticking,
time they didn't have.
