The sun resurfaced as the group moved away from the crowded city center and away from the bounty hunters' merciless aim. They had a clear view of the break of day as they had almost made it to Madripoor's port. Sam, now walking comfortably in flat shoes, stared at the sunrise in a moment of calmness. "Madripoor could give New York a run for its money." He said, also acknowledging the probable amount of exporting material in the containers surrounding them. Apparently, the man they were looking for was hiding nearby.
"They know how to party." Zemo added. He should know. Though Jessica, who had seen him give his all on the dancefloor.
"With that bounty on your head, the longer you're in Madripoor, the less likely you're ever leaving." Sharon said, bringing them all back to reality. A few steps ahead, she stopped next to one of the containers. "All right. He's in there. Container four-two-six-one. I'll keep an eye out while you guys talk to Nagel."
"You sure you don't want back up?" Anna looked at the former agent, offering herself for help.
"No, but hurry. We're on borrowed time." She said and opened the door to the inside of the big metal box.
All except Carter got inside, only to find nothing.
"What are we supposed to find here?" Asked Bucky, putting into words what everyone was thinking.
"I don't know, a lab, maybe."
"Umm, I haven't had very positive experiences in laboratories." Jessica mumbled, reminiscing what had happened to her in the past. From that point on she decided to refrain from using her powers as long as they were nearby said lab, just to avoid any casualties.
"Hey, Sharon. You sure this is the right one? It's completely empty." Sam asked into the earpiece.
"Positive. It has to be."
Jessica decided to walk forward until she reached the end of the container. There must be something here, she thought. She placed her hand on the cold metal and lightly pushed, revealing that way a secret entrance to an upper level.
Jessica looked back at Sam, who nodded in approval for her to go up, followed by the rest of the team. They all went up the stairs to find, indeed, a fully equipped laboratory. Jessica let Sam walk ahead her, leading everyone. The only thing that could be heard was a song being played in an old yet compacted record player. There was a man inside - the man they were looking for - but he hadn't heard them come in as he was singing along to the song lyrics.
Sam stoped the record player, making the man freeze in the spot. "Dr. Nagel?"
Startled, he turned to face the intruders pointing guns at him. "Who are you? What do you want?"
"We know you created the super-soldier serum."
"Get out of my lab." He said, getting up and walking away from Sam, who was closer to him. Nagel stood still as soon as he spotted Bucky and Anna guarding the exit.
"You know who they are, right?" Sam grabbed the scientist by the arm as he nodded his head towards the Winter Soldiers. "This is Baron Zemo. I know you've heard of him, too, right? And Jessica, of course, who doesn't know her?" The doctor seemed to shrink at the sight of the threat. He was starting to understand who was he dealing with. "You seem like a pretty smart guy, so you better become conversational real quick."
Surprisingly, the doctor talked back to Sam's inquiries. "How about a counter proposal? Make me a better offer and I'll talk."
"Guys, we have company. Every bounty hunter in the city is here." Sharon's voice resounded in everyone's earpiece. "We gotta go!"
With the added pressure coming from Sharon, and seeing that the scientist was not going to talk, Anna decided to force him and sit him down, while Bucky fired a bullet that passed millimetres from the man's ear. Now he was definitely going to talk.
"Okay, okay..." Nagel groaned. "I was brought into HYDRA's Winter Soldier program to pick up their work after the six..." He looked at Anna, indicating that he had recognised her from the start. "or rather five, failed test subjects in Siberia. When HYDRA fell, I was recruited by the CIA. They had blood samples from an American test subject with semi-stable traces of serum in his system." "After much labor, I was able to isolate the necessary compounds in his blood. I was a god. I did what no other scientist since Erskine was able to do, but mine was going to be different. No clunky machines or jacked up bodies. Mine was going to be subtle, optimized, perfect."
"How have we never heard about this?" Sam asked.
"Because," Nagel continued. "before I was able to complete my work, I turned to dust. Then when I returned, it was five years later, program had been abandoned, so I came here. The Power Broker was more than happy to fund the recreation of my work."
"How many vials did you make?"
"Twenty." Nagel said, almost bitterly. "Karli Morgenthau stole those, so... I can only imagine what the Power Broker has planned for that poor girl."
"Where's Karli now?"
"I don't know where she is." He shrugged, indifferent. "But a couple of days ago, she called and asked if I could help someone named Donya Madani. Poor woman has tuberculosis. Typical of overpopulation in displacement camps like that."
"Well, what happened to her?"
"Not my pig. Not my farm."
"Is there any serum in this lab?" Asked Sam and Bucky pressed his gun right at the guys temple, making sure he answered truthfully.
"No."
"Now what?" Bucky pulled down the gun after Nagel's negative response, but before Sam could give him an answer, Sharon came running into the laboratory.
"Guys, we're seriously outta time here-"
What happened next went down so fast that Jessica had almost no time to absorb it. Zemo, not knowing how he managed to get his hands on a gun, shot Nagel right between the eyes, killing him instantly.
"No! What did you do?" Sam pushed Zemo against the wall and took the weapon away from him. However, a second later, something impacted the container and quickly the small space exploded into a fire.
"I swear that wasn't me!" Jessica coughed after being shoved against a cupboard full of tubes and pipes containing chemical concoctions. She lied next to Sharon, who had trouble getting up from the collision. She saw Bucky helping Anna up and telling Sam to get out of there. She didn't wait for him to tell her to do that herself as well. Buck and Anna jumped out of the container first, yet before the last three could do the same, another explosion detonated, this time because of the internal damage of the lab. In order to protect herself, Sam and Sharon, Jessica created an energy field around them, careful to not manipulate any more radiation than the necessary. "Why does this always happen to me?"
"Anybody see Zemo?" Asked Sam after they had landed on the ground and he had recomposed himself.
"Let's go." Sharon told them as they walked away from the burning container, only to find out they were being shot by a majority of the bounty hunters in Madripoor.
"All right! Wait for my signal!" Bucky, appearing behind them, said and started shooting back at the hunters. Jessica had no other option but to stay back and not get shot, since she was the only one without a gun. Sam dragged her to a more secure space, where they could use part of an overturned container to shelter from the bullets.
"Damn it! And you like living here?" Sam yelled at Sharon while shooting back.
"It's not terrible." Sharon had run out of bullets, and soon the rest were also going to.
"Ah!" Bucky groaned when the same happened to him. He turned to Sam angrily. "I thought we were gonna go left!"
"You went the wrong way!"
"I was clearing the way!" The Winter Soldier replied. Anna joined the rest of the group after being left with no ammunition. "You are supposed to follow me."
"Guys, not the time!"
As the two men fought like toddlers, Jessica peaked at the scenario in front of them. There was a big pipeline just before them, and several shooter were hiding behind it. Jessica assumed it must have contained gas, because of the size of it, and an idea popped in her mind.
"Jessica!"
Jessica ran towards the pipeline while creating an energy field around her to cover from the shots. Once she was close enough, she focused all her energy towards the pipeline. It blew up, taking down most of the hunters around it. Between the fire and smoke she saw a masked figure shooting at their opponents. Soon she recognised Zemo's coat, which clarified he was still alive. Looking down at one of the beaten man, Jessica took a knife from him in case she were to need it.
"Come on." She turned back at the rest of the group, who were looking at the scene in shock. "Let's go."
Sharon guided them to another container where they could refugee themselves from the hunters left. Everyone was in except for Bucky and Jessica, who were last, when a few of the last hunters attacked them. They both dodged their bullets, and Bucky took one down just with a punch. Jessica saw another one lurking up behind him, but before he could do anything, she threw the knife she had just picked up at him and made him fall backwards.
She and Bucky got in the container with the rest of the group and not even a second passed before the Winter Soldier yelled at her, but not because she had done something wrong.
"What the hell?!" He frowned. "And you've been containing yourself from fighting all this time?!"
She did not answer, instead, she followed Sharon, who had gotten out through the other side of the container. Once out, Zemo pulled up in a car, most likely stolen, right in front of the them. "Supercharged."
"Right, keep stealing things and killing people." Anna said, scolding him for what he did and warning him one more time. "You're going back to jail."
"Do you want to find Karli or not?" The baron countered, quite rightly.
"He's right, we need him." Bucky told her while getting on the passanger seat of the embezzled vehicle. "There's four of us, and at least 20 of them."
Anna clicked her tongue in disapproval but ended up getting in the back seat, Jessica taking the seat besides hers. "Fine, but if you try that shit again..."
"I wouldn't dream of it, sister." Zemo shot her a mischievous smile through the rear-view mirror. He was definitely lying.
"Well, that was one hell of a reunion." Sharon said as her goodbye words, but Sam tried to make her change her mind.
"Come back to the States with us."
"I told you I can't." She simply said. "Just get me that pardon you promised me."
"Thanks for everything, Sharon." Anna smiled, getting the same in return from the former agent. Sam sat next to Jessica, and consequently behind Bucky. There was so little space left for him that his knees almost touched his chest. It was clearly very uncomfortable.
"You're not gonna move your seat up, are you?" He grunted and asked Bucky.
"No." The Winter Soldier replied, making Jessica chuckled. Anna tried to hold hers back, remembering that time when it was the other way around. Bucky certainly had certainly his comeback.
"Seriously guys."
. . .
The plan was to return to New York City. Exhausted, the group used Zemo's jet for the trip, which was comfortable enough to allow them to relax for a bit after the frenetic hours they had spent in Madripoor.
Bucky approached Jessica perhaps an hour after the jet had taken off. "What's your deal? You make things explode?"
"Radiation manipulation." Jessica explained, clarifying his doubts. "Can do a lot of things with that if you get creative."
"You should have seen her, doll." He said as Anna took the seat next to him. "It was like-" He recreated explosion noises and gestured it with his hands, making Jessica chuckle. "And the fighting- where did you learn that?"
"Black Widow taught me." Jessica answered, reminiscing of her old mate. "I trained with her for five years."
Bucky lifted his eyebrows, not expecting that answer but perfectly convinced by it. "Well, that makes sense."
"Thanks, Torres." Sam sat next to them as he hung up the phone.
"You okay, Sam?" Anna asked when she saw her friend seemed more irritated that usual.
"Yeah, just thinking about all the shit Sharon had to go through," He sighed. "and Nagel referring to the American test subject like Isaiah wasn't even a real person. Just makes me wonder how many people have to get steamrolled to make way for this hunk of metal."
"Well, it depends on who you ask." Bucky said, referring to the shield as 'the hunk of metal'. "That hunk of metal saved a lot of lives."
"Yeah, I get that... All right." Sam finally admitted. "Maybe I made a mistake."
"You did, yeah."
"Maybe I shouldn't have put it in a museum." Sam added, taking everyone by surprise, especially Bucky. "Maybe I should have destroyed it."
"Look, that shield represents a lotta things to a lotta people, including me. The world is upside down, and we need a new Cap, and it ain't gonna be Walker. So before you go and destroy it, I'm gonna take it from him myself."
Before Sam could reply to Bucky's outrage, his phone vibrated from an incoming call. "Yeah, thanks. Good work." He looked down after leaving the call. "They found Madani...Dead. She died in Riga, a city near the Baltic Sea."
Zemo, the last person who should have said anything at that moment, decided to speak. "I have a place we can go. I, for one, am looking forward to coming face to face with Karli. Oeznik, we're changing the course."
They slept for a couple of hours until they arrived in Riga, Latvia. Zemo had someone send a car to pick them up from the jet hangar where they disembarked and dropped them to the centre of the city. Jessica thought it was pretty similar to Prague, which she had visited in her school trip before everything happened. A knot formed in her throat after that thought intruded her mind, so she chose to remain shut for a while and focus on something else.
"I heard what became of Sokovia, cannibalised by its neighbours before the land was cleared of rubble, erased from the map. I don't suppose any of you bothered visiting the memorial?" Nobody said anything, and Zemo got his answer. "Of course not. Why would you?"
Anna slowed down, as she noticed a weak beeping sound coming from somewhere nearby them. Bucky perceived something was wrong by the way his wife was looking at him. When he reached her, she passed him the Kimoyo bead she had found.
"We are here." Zemo gestured towards the building supposed to be his place.
"Good." Bucky said, standing a few feet away from the rest. "We're gonna go on a walk."
"Something happened?" Sam asked, a bit worried about the couple.
"No, just some marital things we need to discuss." Anna put as an excuse. "We'll see you guys in a bit." They both went in the direction they had found the first beep and followed the soft beeping sounds not far away from them.
As expected, they found more of them. Up until they also found the person who had left them there.
"You dropped something." Bucky extended his hand with the beads in it to the familiar face in one of Riga's alleys. Ayo, a Dora Milaje, standing right in front of them to claim justice one again.
"You were taking too long to show up."
