Chapter 6
Scarlet touched the soft sand beneath her, still retaining some of the warmth from the sun. She buried herself into it, preferring the grain than the cold ocean breeze that chilled her bones.
It was strange suddenly laying on the sand than the large king sized bed her back was used to but for some strange reason she felt better than sleeping next to her husband. She no longer felt the constant fear in her heart, the fear of never being able to see the rising sun in the morning.
She rested her head against the makeshift pillow, a series of palm leaves bundled together, her legs intertwined to keep her warmth within.
"Did you love your husband?" the man in the water said, his gold eyes flicking at her, red hair resting on his pale shoulders. The moonlight brought an eerie glow over the merman, bringing the soft flicker on the golden hoops in his ears, the occasional glint from his red and blue scales. Scarlet sighed softly, glancing at the shore, entranced by the way the midnight waves crashed against the white sands.
"When we met and the years after that I'm sure that I did. But now that I have separated from him and I think back, it seems as if I had grown to be afraid of him," she murmured, digging her hands into the soft sand beneath her.
"To fear someone you love," Atlantis spoke with a tilt of his head, "It must of have been difficult."
Scarlet bit the inside of her cheek, "It was hard but eventually I learned that fear was what he enjoyed the most."
Atlantis frowned, resting his cheek on the palm of his hand, "What did your family say of him?"
Scarlet closed her eyes, reminiscing the day she had introduced Will to her family. She remembered seeing him flashing his charming smile, watching her mother pull Will into an embrace and her father puff up with pride. They had seen Will as a miracle from Heaven, their only child to catch the eye of a wealthy billionaire, a man they had seen as kind and who helped them overcome the obstacles of their struggling business.
"They loved him."
Atlantis's gold eyes darkened, almost out of rage before becoming strangely dull, "I'm sorry."
Scarlet offered a small smile, "It's all in the past and I do not plan on making the same mistake twice." The merman's lips drew up in a small smile. The creature seemed friendly enough and yet Scarlet had yet to figure him out. She knew nothing of him, save that he was Morgan's boyfriend or "lover" as the odd creature with jagged teeth had so eloquently put it. The two seemed to pair off rather well, neither one's gazes straying from the other for long.
She envied them. To have someone love with the purest form of sincerity and never leaving their side. It was something she had wanted with Will, to feel him touch her with such tenderness. Instead, she had suffered rough hands and broken bones, all the scars hidden beneath her skin. She shut her eyes, chasing away the tears she vowed to never spill again.
"Tell me about you," Scarlet spoke, her voice slightly hoarse from her inner turmoil.
Atlantis arched a brow in question, his golden eyes glittering, " What about me?"
Scarlet let the grains of white sand pass through her fingers, "Tell me about you. Your family."
Atlantis said nothing, forcing Scarlet to look at the red hair man. Darkness had passed over his pretty features, his full lips in a frown as his knuckles showed white. She could only watch as a series of negative emotions flashed overs his features and for the briefest moments moments she thought she saw his gold eyes turn black and fangs protruding from his mouth but when she blinked they were gone.
What was that? She thought. A premonition? Should she be wary of Morgan's lover? What was the red head hiding? But Atlantis seemed, like someone who had a good heart. It seemed that the more she pondered, the more questions she had and the more confused she became.
"Scarlet?" she heard a merman say, urging her to turn her head towards the serpent eyed merman who had returned. The creature's was tilted to the side, revealing the glittering blue earrings on his ears.
"Morgan," she spoke, forgetting about what she had seen in Atlantis's face, "Did you finish it?"
The witch grinned, raising a single vial into the air, the red liquid swirling within, "It's done."

Lilith touched the horns that protruded from her forehead, her full lips turning into a frown. It seemed every death that came from the hand of the god hosts she became more monstrous.
Lilith curled her lip in a sneer, glaring at the mirror that showed her changing self. Her hair was no longer in black and gold locks but they had changed into black snakes with golden eyes, the slimy creatures hissing with her emotions. Her mocha skin was becoming paler, almost a dull dark gray. Her teeth had sharpened, the jagged edges digging into the tender flesh of her mouth.
"Pesky gods," she growled, baring the sharp fangs at her image. This time she needed to be more careful and not let the filthy humans put not even a single touch to her flesh.
With angry movements she grabbed a small creature, a tiny worm, whose dark blood permeated and tinted the skin. She bit off its head and spat it out to the side, smearing the creature's blood over her lips.
"You look ugly," someone said behind her, the darkness covering half of his face.
Lilith gave a small snort of laughter, "I'm beautiful and you know, any imperfection and He will fix it."
The creature frowned, his taloned hand reaching to touch his lips, the black nails dull aginst the light from the algae, "Poseidon doesn't have the time for you pettiness, you know he must save power if he wishes to take over the ocean realm."
Lilith grinned, "With my help he will."
The creature only grinned, his jagged teeth glinting, "You know that's not true."
Lilith glanced at the mirror, her eyes meeting the dead ones of the creature, dull and black as the abyss they lived in, and for some reason, they sent chills down her spine.
