I woke up with a smile on my face. Wait.. woke up? I turned over to see Josh still laying on his back beside me with his eyes closed. I can't believe we had both fallen asleep on the bed. He still had one of the headphones in his ear. I grabbed his phone to see he still had a playlist playing.
I turned it off and took the earbud out of his ear. "Hey Josh," I whispered trying to wake him up as nicely as possible. "Josh," I whispered again. He barely opened his eyes and quickly closed them again. I chuckled. "Come on, I know you're awake," I said. Josh yawned and rubbed his eyes.
"What time is it?" he asked. I looked at the clock that was sitting on the nightstand. "It's a little after five," I said. He sat up and ran his hand through his messy hair. "Why did we sleep so late?" he asked. I chuckled again. "Why did we sleep at all?" I asked in return. "We were supposed to be relaxing. Isn't sleeping relaxing?" he asked in return.
I shrugged. "True, but I was also supposed to help with laundry when it came back," I said. Josh shrugged. "I think they'll survive one laundry day without you," he said. I stood up off the bed and stretched. My beanie cap was laying on the bed. I quickly fixed my hair and grabbed the beanie placing it back on my head.
Josh stood up and readjusted his t-shirt. "Now what?" I asked. Josh pointed towards the door. "Dinner?" he asked in return. I nodded. "I'll grab some keys from Jake so we can take one of the SUVs. Meet you in five," I said. Josh nodded and walked back through the conjoining door into his room.
I walked out the door and across the hall to Jake's room knocking on the door lightly. Jake opened the door in sweatpants and no shirt. It didn't phase me. I was used to half the men around here not wearing shirts. "Hey, can I borrow some keys? Josh and I are going to grab some dinner," I said.
Jake grabbed a pair of keys and handed them to me. "Everyone is ready to turn in for the night and you two are just now ready to go out?" he asked. I tucked the keys in my pocket. "We took a nap and got reenergized," I said. Jake nodded. "Alright well don't stay out to late. We have a radio show bright and early in the morning," he said. I nodded. "I'm aware. We need to be on the road by 7:30," I said turning to leave just as another door opened and Josh came up beside me. "So, where to?" I asked him as we walked towards the elevator.
"Taco Bell?" he asked as we walked into the elevator. I laughed. "You just had Taco Bell last night. In case you forgot I brought you and Tyler ten tacos each," I said. "And cinnamon twists," he said. I looked over to see him smiling. "And cinnamon twists," I said as the elevator opened to the lobby.
We walked out into the night air and I hit the unlock button to see what SUV lit up. "Wanna drive?" I asked Josh holding out the keys to him. He grabbed them with me. "If I drive I get to pick the restaurant," he said. I climbed in the passenger seat as he climbed behind the steering wheel.
"Fine, as long as it's not Taco Bell," I said. Josh grabbed his phone out of his pocket and looked up an address before pulling out of the parking lot of the hotel. "Where are we going?" I asked him. He readjusted in the seat and looked before making a left turn. "It's a surprise," he said. I sat back and got comfortable.
Soon we pulled into Waffle House and got out of the care. "Is this cool?" he asked as he opened the door to the restaurant for me. I nodded and headed towards a booth in the back hoping that Josh wouldn't get recognized. A waitress quickly came over and dropped two glasses of water on our table before walking off.
"Just like tacos there's never not a good time for waffles," I said to Josh as the waitress came back up to our table. "Sorry about that guys. It's a little busy here tonight. What can I get for you guys?" she asked with her pen and paper in hand. Josh and I looked at each other with a knowing smile.
"Chocolate chip waffles," we said at the same time and then laughed. The waitress walked off with a smile. "Okay, so tomorrow we have to be on the road by 7:30, we have the radio show at 8:30, and then after the ra-," Josh held up his hand. "What?" I asked him. "Can we not talk about the tour tonight? I didn't bring you to dinner to talk business. Can't we just sit and talk about anything but the tour?" he asked me.
I sat back in the booth. Not mad or offended, but a little shocked that he didn't want to talk about the tour. "O-ok, then what do you want to talk about?" I asked him. It was odd to not talk about the tour. I mean sure, Josh and I talked about other things, but when we had things to do that was tour related it was about 90% of our conversations.
"Do you remember what we used to do when we first had to get to know each other?" Josh asked. I laughed as the waitress came back and laid our waffles on the table. "Thanks," Josh said as he grabbed some syrup. "How could I forget? Jake threw me in front of a shirtless you and told us to get to know each other," I said.
Josh laughed. "And what did we do?" he asked me. "Well, first, after me showing you that I actually knew how to set up a drumkit and oil valves on a trumpet, we played twenty questions getting to know each other," I said. Josh fixed his beanie on his head and then dug into his waffle.
"You make it sound like I didn't trust you," he said taking a giant bite. I grabbed the syrup for myself and poured it over my waffle. "Well, you were kind of eyeballing me like you thought Jake was nuts for giving me to you," I said. Josh giggled as he took a drink of his water. "Trust me, Rubes. That definitely was not it," he said.
I took a bite of my waffle and chewed slowly. "So, are you wanting to play twenty questions again? Not gonna lie, I feel like we know each other pretty well by now and don't need to play twenty questions anymore," I said after I swallowed the first bite of my waffle. Josh had already finished half of his.
He smiled and put his fork down. "I was just asking, Ru. We're not gonna play that, but we definitely don't know everything about each other," he said. I took another bite of my waffle. "Well, this is true, but I think you know enough," I said. Josh finished off his waffle and pushed his plate to the side.
"Who know that my assisstant would become a good friend," he said as I finished my waffle. "Hey, you hate that word," I said pointing my fork at him. "What? Friend? Yes, I totally hate that word," he said. I rolled my eyes. "You knew what I meant," I said as I pushed my plate to the side. The waitress came and collected our plates and laid the check down.
Josh and I reached for it at the same time. We both locked eyes and pulled back. I held up my hand and so did Josh. "Loser pays?" I asked and Josh nodded. "Rock, paper, scissors, shoot!" Josh and I said at the same time. People probably thought we were crazy. Josh threw paper and I threw scissors.
"Ha! Victory!" I said as I stood up from the table. Josh laid money down on the table and got up. "You know I don't mind paying," he said as we made our way out to the car. He grabbed my door for me and I hopped in waiting on him to get to the drivers side. "I know you don't mind paying," I said as he backed out of his parking spot.
"But I also know that there's no reason that I can't pay either. We're friends. Coworkers. We can split things," I said. It fell silent between us and it didn't take long to make it back to the hotel. We got out and walked into the hotel. We stepped into the elevator and rode it up to our floor. As soon as the elevator doors opened we were greeted by Tyler.
"Josh, there you are. I was about to come find you," I kind of tuned Tyler out as we walked down the hallway to our rooms and Tyler jumped into an animated story. "Rubik's Cube!" I jumped and turned to face the boys. "Sorry, I was daydreaming," I said. "You don't need Josh anymore, do you?" Tyler asked.
"Nah, we were just grabbing dinner. It was nothing important," I said as I opened the door to my room. "Good, because I need him," Tyler said as he drug him down the hall a few more rooms to his and opened the door. "See y'all tomorrow," I said as I walked into my room and shut the door.
I kicked off my shoes and stripped the beanie off of my head before flopping down on the bed with a heavy sigh. Even though we had napped it didn't help. Quite honestly I could go right back to sleep. Who knew what Tyler needed Josh for, but I figured it was something important. I looked over at the conjoining door.
It was still standing wide open. I could see Josh's bed from where I was laying. I should've probably gotten up and shut it, but I figured if Josh wanted privacy if and when he came back to his room he could shut his door. I grabbed my sweatpants and changed into them before flopping down on the bed again.
I grabbed the remote to the TV and turned it on. Nothing interesting was on so I just left it on a random channel and turned it down low. Down time on tour always made me feel weird. I always felt like there was something to do even if there wasn't. I didn't know how to relax and just be.
Well, that's not true. I'm able to be relaxed when Josh is around. Even when he's running on and off stage changing clothing and trying to grab a drink of water. There's just something about his easy going nature that rubs off on you and makes you want to be just like him. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath in.
I looked over at the clock to see that it wasn't even seven yet. Maybe I shouldn't have taken that nap. It was going to be a long night now. Everyone else had already went out and they were tired and turning in for the evening. I crawled under the covers when I noticed that Josh's headphones were still laying on the bed.
I grabbed them and plugged them into my phone. At least this way I knew where they were at. I put the ear buds in my ears and laid back on the pillows. I surfed through all my playlists until I found the one I wanted. It was my favorite. Josh made it for me and he named it Rubik's Cube & Drumsticks.
I smiled as I hit play and all the music that described our friendship filled my ears. I got comfortable and closed my eyes as I relaxed into the pillows. I couldn't help but to crack a smile as the first song came on. It was a little lame but it already brought a smile to my face when I heard it.
You got a friend in me..
