I woke up slightly well rested the next morning. The bus seemed like it had stopped moving finally. I rubbed my eyes and listened to hear some of the crew already awake. I pulled the curtain back on my bunk and got out of bed. I stretched and grabbed a change of clothes before stepping into the small bathroom to change.
I brushed my hair and threw on a TØP beanie not bothering to do my hair. I left my glasses on too knowing that we had a rest day. Today was all about transferring from a tour bus to a hotel room for a couple days. Thank God, a normal bed to sleep in. I yawned as I opened the door and walked out into the living area.
Everyone was spread out on the couches with paperwork in hand. I was instantly shoved a piece of paper that had "SanFran Schedule" written in big letters at the top. Someone also handed me a to go cup with coffee in it. "Thanks," I said as I took a seat on one of the couches. "Alright everyone, today is pretty easy. We just got to get what we need from bus to room and then we have the rest of the day. Tomorrow starts the craziness," Jake said as he stood up.
We all broke apart and headed for our gear to take with us to the room. I grabbed my backpack with a couple pairs of clothes in it along with my essentail things like my laptop, phone, and chargers. "Roll out in five!" Jake called through the bus when I was already heading to the front. I walked down the stairs and was instantly greeted by the bright sun.
I shouldered my backpack and tucked my phone in my pocket. I made my way into the hotel knowing that it was either mine or Jake's job to check all of us in. "Rubik's Cube!" a familiar voice called out. I turned to see Josh making his way towards me with a rolling suitcase behind him.
I popped an eyebrow at him. "We're only staying in the hotel two days. How much clothing do you need?" I asked him as he started walking beside me up to the hotel's entrance. "Well somebody told me I like to rip my t-shirts off," he said. I nudged him in the shoulder lightly but couldn't help but laugh.
"Do you need more t-shirts?" I asked. He shook his head. "Nah, I got enough to last me another city," I rolled my eyes again as we made our way to the front desk. "Hey there, TØP checking in for three days," I said handing the man a couple of papers and a card. The man quickly checked us in and handed me a few hotel key cards. "Thanks," I said as I turned to hand two to Josh. "Give Tyler his too, would you?" I asked and Josh nodded.
"You're not going up to the rooms?" he asked as he noticed I turned back to the entrance. I shook my head. "Nah, not yet. It's laundry day!" I said as I started walking off. "Well hey, all my dirty clothes are i-" "In the red bag, I know," I said as I turned to him and flashed a peace sign before heading back towards the busses.
By the time I made it back everyone was already stripping the bunks of their linens. I handed out rooms assignments and then stripped my own bunk before placing new sheets on it. "Good?" Jake asked as I placed my dirty sheets in our dirty laundry bag. I nodded and grabbed my personal laundry bag.
"Yeah, I got the room assignments done. We just gotta strip the boys' bus," I said as we stepped off the bus and loaded all our laundry in the back of one of our SUVs. Jake nodded and we both took off to their bus. Luckily they keep it pretty clean so its mostly switching sheets and grabbing the dirty laundry.
Tyler and Josh only trusted Jake and I on their bus. Not that they didn't like or trust the other crew, but the two of us had been with them the longest out of everyone so we just had a trust built between all of us. "At least they cleaned up a little," Jake said with a laugh as we got the trash and stripped their beds.
I quickly made Tyler's bed and turned to Josh's. I grabbed his red laundry bag and chucked it down the hallway of the bus. I grabbed some new sheets and started making his bed when something caught my eye. Above Josh's pillow was a concert ticket stub for Blink 182 and beside it a picture of us.
I smiled remembering that night fondly. It was the middle of tour and we had a few days in one location when Josh came to me with the tickets. He asked if I wanted to go with him. How could I pass up tickets to Blink 182? It was cold, we froze our butts off waiting in line to get into the venue. That's when Josh pulled out his phone and took a picture of the two of us together. Our cheeks were smashed together and we had the biggest smile on our faces.
The concert that night was beyond incredible and one of my biggest memories. I touched the picture lightly. I never knew Josh had both the ticket and picture hanging up in his bunk. "Ready?" Jake asked. I quickly made Josh's bed and closed the curtain. I noticed his trumpet in the case on the floor.
"Might as well take this with me while I'm in here. It needs shined and oiled," I said. Jake nodded. "Tyler's Uke needs restrung too. I swear he breaks all the strings every show," he said. I laughed as I grabbed Josh's laundry from the floor. "That's how I feel about Josh and t-shirts," I said as I followed Jake out of the bus and locked it behind us.
We threw the boys' laundry in the back of the SUV and closed the hatch. "Thank God that's over," I said while fixing my beanie. "Time to rest," Jake said. I nodded knowing I wasn't needed until the other crew came back with the laundry and Jake and I would put it back on the boys' bus. I handed Jake his room key.
"Let's go enjoy some real beds," I said. Jake laughed and I grabbed Josh's trumpet from the ground. Jake had Tyler's Ukulele. We made it inside and up the elevators. Jake and I walked down the hall and stopped at rooms across from each other. "See you in a little bit," I said as I slid the key card in my door and opened it.
Jake nodded and slipped into his room. I threw my bag on the floor and put Josh's trumpet on the desk in the room before flopping on the bed with a heavy sigh. This bed felt way better than the one on the bus. I closed my eyes for a split second, but sat back up immediately knowing that I needed to work on Josh's trumpet.
I sat down at the desk and opened the case. I smiled as I ran my finger over the brass. I noticed at the last show that the valves were sticking slightly when he was playing. I laid out a towel and quickly took it apart with ease. This was a job I could do blind folded just like putting his drum kit together.
I oiled the valves and looked over the rest of it to make sure that nothing else needed to be worked on besides it needing to be shined up. I grabbed the mouth piece and popped it in the trumpet. After cleaning out the valves I went over to the window and opened it. I placed the trumpet to my lips and blew.
I played a simple scale to make sure nothing was sticking and everything was working properly. I closed the window and sat down satisfied with my work. I grabbed a cloth and started getting all the fingerprints off of it when my phone pinged signaling I had a text message. I dropped the cloth and grabbed my phone to see it was Josh.
Drumsticks: I'm gonna need you to stop playing my trumpet. lol
You can hear me?!
You do realize your room is next to mine, right?
Uh.....no?
Open your conjoining door.
I laid my phone on the desk and placed the trumpet back in its case before getting up and walking to the conjoining door. I opened it and was greeted by the red haired drummer boy. "Hm, odd. I thought I was next to Tyler," I said as he grinned. "You were, I traded him," he said walking into my room and plopping down on my bed.
I followed him with my eyes and chuckled. "Go ahead make yourself comfortable," I said while sitting down in the desk chair. He chuckled and kicked off his shoes. I rolled my eyes while grabbing the trumpet and wiping it down some more. "You know you don't have to do that, right?" he asked from the bed.
I turned to face him. "Uh yes I do, it's part of my job," I said. Josh waved me off. "Right now you should be resting like the rest of us," he said. I finished the trumpet and locked it back in the case. "I'll rest after the crew comes back with laundry," I said. Josh sat up on his elbows to look at me.
"I'm pretty capable of putting my own laundry away," he said. I chuckled. "I know, but you also have to drum your hands off, so I don't really think you have time to put away your laundry, and God Forbid you sprain a wrist while doing it or something," I said sarcastically just as a pillow whizzed at my head.
"Hey!" I yelled tossing it back at him. He smiled while placing it under his head. "Come on, Ru, relax. Take a load off," he said while patting the bed beside him. I shook my head. "I'm good, really," I said while propping my feet up on the desk. Josh laid back and got comfortable. "Good, I didn't want to share anyway," he said.
I chuckled just as a knock on the door sounded. I got up and was greeted by Jake. "Hey," I said leaning against the doorframe. Jake looked over my head at Josh laying on the bed then back at me. I shrugged. "Apparently mine is more comfortable," I said. Jake laughed. "We're about to grab some lunch, wanna join us?" he asked.
I looked back at Josh, whose eyes were now closed. I shook my head. "Nah, I'm good. I'll grab something a little later. I just want to stay in for now," I said. Jake nodded and headed off as I shut the door. I plopped back down in the desk chair. "You could've went with them," Josh said softly.
I turned around to see him staring at me. "I thought you fell asleep," I said. He shook his head. "I can only sleep when the bus is moving," he said and I smiled. "I really didn't want to go," I said. "Tired?" he asked and I nodded. He scooted over slightly and patted the spot beside him. "Last time I offer," he said.
I laughed and got out of the chair. "So nice of you to offer me my own bed," I said. Josh smiled and turned to me as I laid down beside him. Josh pulled out his phone and ear buds. He put one in and laid on his back while offering me the other. I placed it in my ear and got comfortable just as Blink 182 filled my ear. I smiled as it brought back memories of that night at the concert. I looked at Josh out of the corner of my eye. He was smiling too.
