Chapter 1
*Ruby's POV*
"Five minutes!" I heard through my headphones causing a smile on my face. This was my favorite part of every night. Even though they played the same songs and I could sing every piano note, drum hit, and guitar riff I loved every minute of it. "Ready for this?" I asked turning to Josh.
He wasn't in my line of sight. I looked down to see him doing pushups getting himself pumped. He stood up after a couple more and placed his snap back on backwards. He smiled his perfect smile at me before placing his ear ins in and handing me the battery pack. I rolled my eyes as he turned around with his back to me.
"You know I figured after two years of this you would be able to clip on your own battery pack," I said as I quickly clipped it to his pants knowing we only had a couple more minutes. "Well, if you didn't do it for me, then what would you be doing right now, Rubik's Cube?" he asked me rhetorically as I pushed him towards the stage rolling my eyes at the nickname he had given me.
"Oh whatever, hey!" I said as Josh made it to the top of the stairs. He turned and looked at me. "Try not to rip that shirt off. I'm sick of having to buy you new ones every city," I said. There was a smile on my face so he knew I was kidding. "I make no promises," he said winking at me before making his way to his drum kit.
"Josh is ready," I said into my walkie talkie. "Tyler is ready," I heard through my headphones knowing that Tyler's assistant was on the other side with him. "Alright ladies and germs, show time," Jake, our road manager said. I held my breath as the music started and the black curtain dropped. Screams erupted through the arena.
~~~
"Water," Josh breathed as he ran off the stage in the dark. I hit the flashlight on my phone and quickly handed him a water bottle knowing he didn't have much time. I took his current snap back off his head and handed him his mask before tossing him a shirt to match. "30 seconds!" I heard through my headphones.
"Let's go, Josh," I said holding my hand out for his water. He handed it back to me and quickly slipped his shirt and his mask on. "Good?" I asked him and he nodded as I handed him a different pair of drumsticks. "Go!" I said and he turned making his way back up the stairs. I let out a breath. Sometimes this was stressful.
~~~
"Now the night is coming to an end!"
Fans were singing at the top of their lungs. Josh was grinning from ear to ear as he took off his hat and wiped his head with a towel. He replaced his snap back and grabbed the water from my hand. "How much time do we have?" he asked. I looked at my phone clock. "About a minute," I said. Josh nodded and handed the water back to me.
He jumped around a little bit trying not to lose his energy but i could tell in his face he was wearing down and he was ready for a shower and bed. "Almost there," I said and Josh nodded again. "Let's do this," he said while walking up the stairs. "Josh your shirt!" I yelled. He waved me off with a smile and took a seat behind his kit.
He was about to give 20,000 girls a heart attack when those lights came back up.
~~
"And done! Great job everyone! Get the boys cleaned up!" Jake said through our headphones. I took off my headset ready for my ears to have a break just as Josh came bouncing off the stage with Tyler. "Y'all killed it," I said with a smile. Tyler bowed. "Don't we always?" he asked. I rolled my eyes as he grabbed Josh's water from my hand and kept walking.
"Hey!" I called out but he was already gone. I turned to a shirtless, sweaty Josh. "That was yours," I said as I handed him a towel and he used it to clean himself up. He smile. "When will you learn, Ruby? He takes my water after every show," he said trading me the towel for his favorite Nasa shirt.
"I should really start bringing two waters out at the end of the show. Tyler always walks off with you," I said. I said. Josh chuckled. "Ready to sign some autographs on your way out to the bus?" I asked him holding out some sharpies and he nodded as we walked out the door into the cool night air.
We were in Portland, Oregon tonight. After loading up on the bus we would be heading down to San Fransisco for three days doing press junkets and radio shows before ending the three days with a sold out concert. "Josh!" girls started screaming from the other side of the fence as they caught sight of him.
He smiled down at me. "Be right back," he said. I pulled out my phone and clocked him. We only had fifteen minutes left and we had to go. Tyler was already way ahead of Josh making his way down the line trying to sign as many autographs and take as many pictures as possible. Girls screamed and pressed against each other just to get a glimpse of the two of them.
I walked towards the bus knowing we only had about five minutes left. "Wrap it up!" Jake called from beside me as I scrolled through emails. Both Tyler and Josh wrapped it up with high fives through the fence as they made their way to the bus. They handed me the sharpies and gave one final wave before heading into the bus.
Jake patted the door as it closed and headed towards the roadie bus. "Thank God I can breathe now," I said as we made our way onto the bus. Jake grabbed two waters from the fridge and handed one to me. The other roadies who were on our bus were already in their bunks asleep leaving just the two of us.
"Another city down, " I said taking one of the boys sharpies and marking it off on the calendar on the all. "It feels like a million more to go," Jake said. I chuckled. "That's for sure, but it's so worth it," I said. Jake nodded. "Alright, I'm turning in. You should too. We have a long few days ahead of us," I said patting Jake's shoulder as I walked past him.
I quickly changed into something a little more comfy and slid into my bunk. It was quiet. A couple of snores here and there and I'm pretty sure someone fell asleep with a movie on. I grabbed my headphones and turned on some music so I wouldn't disturb anyone around me. My phone pinged in headphones and I looked at the notification to see I had a text message.
I opened it and laughed instantly.
Drumsticks: "Can we get Taco Bell?"
I rolled my eyes.
It's late, Josh. Shouldn't you be resting and sleeping?
But mooooom, I'm hungry.
Then fix yourself a sandwich. I know the kitchen in the bus is full. We just stocked it yesterday.
I am a growing boy!
I chuckled out loud at that.
You used that excuse last time.
I need a taco in my life!
You have used that line before too.
I got up knowing he would't let it go until we got Taco Bell. Jake was still sitting up on the couch when I walked back in. "Did you get the same text?" he asked and I nodded. "I'm starting to think we just need to have Taco Bell ready for them as soon as they walk off stage," I said. Jake smiled.
"That's actually not a bad idea," he said as he got up to tell the driver to find the local Taco Bell to stop at. It didn't take us long to find one. "I'll get it," I said as I walked out the door and across the parking lot into Taco Bell. The cashier looked at me with wide eyes. "Don't worry, I don't have a big order. I just have two hungry men children in those busses and if they don't get tacos they may die," I said.
The cashier could tell I was being sarcastic but rung me up for twenty tacos. My phone pinged and I looked at it.
Ukulele Boi: Don't forget the Cinnamon Twists!
I rolled my eyes and stuck my phone in my pocket. "Give me two orders of cinnamon twists too," I said and she nodded. I handed her money and told her to keep the change for it being so late and having a bigger order. Soon I was walking out the doors with tacos and cinnamon twists. Before I had a chance to open the bus's door, it slammed open.
"My favorite person bringing me my favorite food," I rolled my eyes as Tyler moved out of the way so I could come in. I placed all the food on the table. "Don't worry, your cinnamon twists are in there," I said. Tyler smiled. "Aw, yessss," he said sitting down at the table and digging in. "Where's the better half?" I asked him.
Tyler stopped midchew and held his hand to his heart. "Hurtful," he said. "But truthful," Josh said as he entered from the back. His hair was wet. He had on shorts and no shirt. "Shower?" I asked and he nodded as he sat at the table. "At least you smell better," I said. Tyler chuckled. "Did you get us tacos in your pajamas?" Josh asked.
I nodded. "If you must know, I was already in bed when you texted me," Josh frowned. "You could've told me. I wouldn't have hounded you about food," he said. I shook my head and waved him off. "It's part of job. I am your assi-," Josh cut me off. "Stop, you know I hate that word," he said digging into another taco.
I shrugged. "It's the truth and you know it. Do you need anything else?" Josh shook his head. I smiled. "Okay, well then I'm going to my bunk and going to bed," I said making my way to the door. "Hey Rubes?" Josh said stopping me. I turned around. "Yeah?" I asked. He smiled. "Thanks for everything you do," he said.
"It's not a problem. I'm just doing my job," I said. "Goodnight Rubik's Cube," he said. I stuck my tongue out at him. "Goodnight Jishwa," I said as I made my way out the door and back to my bus. I climbed on to see no one in the living room. I shut the door and made my way to my bunk hoping to get a little bit of sleep before the next three crazy days happened.
