Chapter Sixty-two
During the rest of the week In-Yeon's dreams resolved into snippets of either the far or the near past. He assumed the lessons from the old battles would be come clearer in time but wondered if the message to find a way to train with a warrior monk. The dreams tracing the movements of the murderous servant took him back to the capture of a Mearcan ship loaded with explosives and how some of those materials made their way to a northern rebel network. While this violation of the accords was alarming, he couldn't be sure if there was more to it.
San Jin brought him a new potion and a modified chant from the Shaman. "They say this should open windows to now and the now to come," he explained with his doubt still clear on his face.
"I'm ready," In-Yeon said as he braced himself to down the foul-smelling liquid. He collapsed against his pillows as the chant finished and his eyes rolled into the back of his head.
"Oh crap," San Jin said as he reached over to check In-Yeon's pulse but as soon as he touched him the boy thrashed around on the bed. All he could do sit by and watch In-Yeon struggle. It made for a long night.
The first thing In-Yeon saw when he woke was San Jin dozing beside the bed. He tried to move with disturbing his host but San Jin jumped up.
"How bad was it? The way you were moving around all night it looked like it might be a doozy."
"Confusing. Well mostly confusing, but I am certain Junseo is heading for trouble. Do you think we might go to the forge someday soon? I would really like to check in with the rest of the team."
"If it is just the team, we can probably have them come here. Mom is always happy to see her boys," San Jin chuckled.
It took a few days to make the arrangements and during that time In-Yeon pieced together more visions. He didn't know how to explain what he now believed about the source of the explosives and the reason Junseo had been so sensitive to the detonators after his crystals had been pushed out of harmony. More importantly, he needed the team to understand how much their former leader might need their help.
San Jin organized activities for the guests in such a way as to give In-Yeon to talk with the different members one-on-one. He started with Song-hee saying, "I know I should not say anything about your special project but I was wondering if you narrowed down the source of the materials in the bombs?"
"You should also know I can't say anything, one way or another," the pale skinned boy answered.
"Fair enough, the thing is I believe the materials came in on a Mearcan boat several years ago. The shipment was properly seized but not well protected so some of the explosives circulated North and were cut with other ingredients." In-Yeon then went on to list the specific items along with their domestic sources. "Even if it is not in scope for your investigation it would be easy enough to check a sample to see if I am right." Song-hee reluctantly agreed to this plan just before San Jin came looking for them with Hae-sung in tow.
"You know I can be pretty skeptical about mystic sort of stuff," San Jin admitted before adding, "I have no way to explain why In-Yeon would know the things he does. Pretty much everything we could check in the chronicles pans out. There are a few differences but those could easily come from just different points of view. So, I am ready to believe him on the other things."
In-Yeon smiled his thanks. Song-hee stood up and said, "I have enough to do my own check and will let you know."
Hae-sung cleared his throat before asking, "Do you have a clear vision of what is happening with Junseo?"
"Not yet. Just an overwhelming sense of danger. I am pretty sure it's somehow linked to the explosives and the way the northern priestess keyed the detonators," In-Yeon whispered while hanging his head. "I have been trying to see more but nothing is coming."
"Maybe that is a good sign," Hae-sung put on a brave smile before suggesting they go check out the stables together. Chenhui and Xuiyang were happy to join this venture and were very encouraging about how well Rufus seemed to be doing. They also delivered a package for In-Yeon from his family's attorney. It contained letters from home and handsome allowance he quickly tucked away.
"So, what is the best route to Ilidan?" In-Yeon asked without preamble.
"The least expensive is going by riverboat. When they are running, and that depends on the weather, the trip can take anywhere between eight or ten days." Xuiyang said looking for confirmation from the other boys.
"That is what Junseo said. He also told me if the pass is open, and you really push it, riding can take about half as much time as the river route," Chenhui added.
"Then there is the most expensive option. Get a coastal ship to drop you at port on the western edge of the plateau then pay the tolls for the King's highway to the Summer Palace. Time it right and it takes two or three days," Hae-sung reported before warning, "There are checkpoints to clear along the route so you need your paperwork in order for the guards. I am guessing no unaccompanied minors just in case you were getting ideas about going on your own." He frowned at In-Yeon who tried to hide a blush.
"Seriously, Dude? You still can't manage full daylight." San Jin shook his head at the young boy's tacit admission.
"I know. It's just staying here doesn't feel right. I wish I knew for sure what was coming," Yeon scuffed the toe of his shoe in the dirt.
"If you trust your dreams, you have to trust the meaning will become clear as you need it. At least that is how my aunt explained it to me when I asked her about what being a seer involved," Hae-sung offered. When he saw the questioning looks all around, he sighed. "Right. I guess you wouldn't know that before she became the head of the Morning Temple my aunt used to visit us regularly. She used to ask my mother to help decode dreams."
"Did they rely on signs and symbols? I don't think most dreams are literal." Chenhui said.
Hae-sung shook his head. "I guess it depends. Sometimes it's all allegory, sometimes it's mostly nonsense. But there are also true dreams and deliberate messages. If my mother was here, she could explain it better."
"It's alright. I do understand how hard it is to take it in. That's why I want you to try to verify what you can. If it pans out, then maybe I can talk with Manager Doak." In-Yeon barely whispered the last bit. After that he gave each team member a different piece of information to verify.
