They won't recall who they are or their memories or where they lived, but they will remember the names of objects and what they were used for and facts about the world they lived in, such as what a sword is or if there was a war or if certain groups were oppressed. Basically, it's like they didn't exist until they start remembering bits and pieces. They know who the ruler is and what they did. They know what was taught, but not what was taught to them. They know common pastimes and jobs, but not what they did. They won't remember interactions unless a memory strikes.

I'm not sure if that clears up much, but I've spent the past couple days delving into medical archives and TV amnesia stories. It's not exactly either of them. Any questions you have on it should be answered ASAP.
