Chapter 16

"Listen up, everyone!", Feeney announced and all eyes looked at his direction.

Before he took the captaincy in EDD, he was once a Lieutenant in Homicide, and like his apprentice, he had handled several ops like this. That's why he's the best proxy for the primary role – as of the moment.

"We have finally established the profiles of our two suspects spotted at the hotel during the murder – a male and a female – and even though Yancy was able to provide some decent cartographic sketches, nothing popped out in our system globally. Luckily, the royal butler's Afef was able to identify these two, and with supporting data from an unknown source, we have IDed them."

Peabody, McNab, Callendar, Baxter and Trueheart looked at Roarke, who was looking at the monitor screen with no guilt.

"The first image here was identified as Kyrios Ameranti, age unknown, a Harminian citizen. Mother's a native, but the father was an American. The father's parents were held as POW during Urban wars, deported back here but forced to leave their child by laws of land. Grew up in the orphanage until he reached the legal age, then got married. The wife died of childbirth and the husband was killed with unknown cause, leaving Kyrios orphaned at the age of fifteen."

"History repeats itself.", Peabody muttered as she read the profile. "How about his grandparents – his father's parents? Did they go back to Harmin for their child after the Urban Wars? And how come that country would make such move of forcing a parent to abandon an infant or turn a child into an orphan?"

This time Roarke explained, "POWs were considered as illegal aliens, and since Kyrios' father was born there, jus soli was ruled, which means the country also has a right towards the child. With several death tolls during the war, preserving its citizens was Harmin's move to avoid dissolution from its enemy borders. More population means less destruction."

"And to recap our World History, POWs were often killed during the course of negotiation, and most of the times, their country itself imposed assassination to those who were considered traitors and spies. The couple here has no exemption."

Feeney flashed the images of two people which were Kyrios' grandparents, and everyone realized that the data came from a top-secret files from FBI.

Everybody stared at Roarke.

"So there's a possibility that this Kyrios is our perpetrator. He has the means, the motives and the capacity. His grandparents were killed, his parents were oppressed, and he himself suffered in a system of a filthy government - why he's still not convicted?", Baxter asked.

"Because of this.", Feeney replied, pointing the other image. "Dr. Mira submitted her profiling, and with statements from Princess Petun as the sole witness, plus the DNA matching from the blood found on the crime scene, it diverted to this person. But unlike with our Kyrios who popped out immediately after facial recognition, this one does not."

Feeney reloaded another data and projected it on screen. "Afef identified the person's image as Lavina Merok, an all-famous rebel from the borders that any Harminian knows. We retrieved her old profile from the Harmin records but there's a large gap after a profile match."

Everybody was staring intently on Roarke but he shrugged it off.

Feeney continued, "Lavinia Merok, 35, has been recorded as one of the casualties died during the Urban Wars. Even if she existed today, her image won't be like this. We even looked for a possibility of a kin, but using her DNA records and compare it to our blood evidence, a mismatch occurred. So to make the story short, this lady we've got here was neither Merok nor anyone related to her. That means, our main perpetrator was using a false identity, and even though we have no solid proof who the hell this was, Mira was able to create a profile enough for us to do some elimination."

Roarke played as EDD consultant for several times, and even though he knew that Feeney and Eve have similar work ethics, it was his first time to see the Captain run an op for Homicide. The way Feeney talked and described the details with flat eyes and firm voice, with expression like he's been reverted by five years, Roarke could see his Eve – though this means that Eve was imitating Feeney's style, not the other way around.

"Then how will be Levinski fit the bill?", Baxter asked.

"You're begrudging his bald-headed comment.", Trueheart murmured that earned him a stomp in his instep.

"The main anomaly we found on that guy was his smuggling activities, which unfortunately fall under FBI and Anti-Crime division. His marriage to the Princess was to conceal his illegal activities in Harmin, and also to solidify his family's name especially the upcoming elections wherein his brother will run as a Senator.", Feeney replied.

"If we convict Levinski now with these evidences found, not only we jeopardize Dallas' plan to lure our perpetrator in participating the wedding arrangements, we also let the IAB, FBI – and worst, HSO – join the party.", Peabody commented with disgust.

Baxter was about to add something in protest, but stopped himself. Then felt his grin widened when an idea struck in his mind. Trueheart saw it and felt a tinge of fear, knowing about his partner's whims on how to get a payback.

"McNab will act as one of the royal consorts to guard Dallas and to troubleshoot if there will be internal glitches. Baxter will play as one of the hotel security while Trueheart will do the caterer. Since Peabody must be physically present in the party as NYPSD representative besides Chief Tibble and Commander Whitney, she can observe the attendees and feel which of them raised a bar. Me, Callendar and Roarke here will stay to monitor all the participants, conduct real-time imaging and profile matching, and observe who's invited and who's not. Remember, our main suspect is a female, with a height ranged from 5'5 – 6', not necessarily a native Harminian but very familiar with the natives culture, knows how to use swords, expert in identity swapping, barely knows or operates electronics and IT stuffs, and has connections to the royal family. Be careful."

Eve felt dizzy and slight nauseous, that got worse when she caught a whiff of somebody's perfumery. She even tried to control herself not to boot inside the bathroom or punch somebody's face out of annoyance.

"You may have this drink, your Highness.", Afef gestured behind her, offering a brownish liquid. She's been taking this concoction for the nth time and its magic only lasted for only twenty minutes.

"Damn, how many hours must I have to endure here?", she muttered in Harmin.

The butler tried to hide his amusement. It's a fancy to see the Lieutenant in their traditional clothing and hear her cursed in their native language, yet still maintained an air of feminism.

"Only an hour left, then afterwards a buffet together with some international representatives. A night ball will start at six so you have to change - "

"Shit, it'll be a day of torture!"

He couldn't hide his grin anymore and stopped himself to remind her about tomorrow's ceremonial dance.

The noise level inside the room lowered when Levinski arrived, wearing a white tux and a large turban. If he thought that the reason why everybody stopped and stared at him because he dominated the room, then he got it wrong.

The accident that happened last night swept the gossip channels, and only Eve knew that the one who leaked the video footage of Levinski's burning head was the same person who crashed the poor fellow's party.

"Oh, my dear beloved Petun!", Levinski announced, knelt in front of Eve and kissed her hands. Repeatedly.

"I'm worried about you yesterday, love. Your butler told me you're still mourning about Mr. Howe's death. What do you want me to do to alleviate your pain?"

She literally froze on the spot, and thanks to her veil, nobody saw her horrified expression.

Unbeknownst to her, Roarke has the same reaction when he witnessed it via monitor. He curled his fist tightly with blue eyes suddenly intensed with deep fury.

Feeney grabbed his sweet-coated nuts and enjoyed the view of the jealous husband witnessing his wife being flirted by an ugly man that out of his league.

Was it an irony – or karma from his womanizer past?
