Chapter One
"Juilet! Its time for dinner!" My grandmother said.
"Coming!" I said. I stood at the front of the line right behind Jessica.
"Fix your hair, honey"
"Yes, grandmother," I said as I flattened down my hair.
"The Prince is ready for dinner. Jessica and Juliet gets to sit next the Prince this time," the Knight stated and opened the door.
Jessica took the lead, she curtsied, smiling and walking over to her seat beside Prince Adam. It was my turn. I smiled, curtsied, and walked over to my spot and sat down. The other maids did the same.
When everyone was seated at the rectangular table the Prince smiled and said, "Let's eat"
I smiled, looking down at the napkin on my lap. Prince Adam was the perfect Prince like in any other fairy tale. He had nice blonde hair, blue eyes, and the sweetest smile. The waiters came with our food. They placed it in front of me.
"Thank you, sir," I said.
He just smiled and nodded politely and moved on.
I looked up to see the Prince smiling at me. I smiled back and looked at Jessica. She was glaring at me with her blue eyes. She too, had blonde hair like the Prince. Maybe that's why the Prince has interest in her.
I quickly frowned and cut up my dinner.
"So Prince, is there any big news?" Jessica asked.
"Yes, there actually is"
"What is it?" She asked, her eyes getting wider.
"I am going to get married in precisely five months."
A bunch of whispers came from everyone but me.
"Who are you getting married to?" I asked.
"Good question, Juliet."
I blushed.
"I don't know yet"
"What do you mean?" Jessica asked.
"I have to find someone to make me my own princess."
"I'll be your princess!" One of the maids exclaimed.
He chuckled, "It has to be someone from a royal family"
That put everyone down.
"So we will see who's the lucky one in five months," my grandmother said looking at me.
My grandmother said that I would marry the man of my dreams, but Prince Adam was that man. But that apparently wasn't going to happen. Prince Adam and I used to be best friends when we were little kids. He was adventurous, kind, and strong. He still is but when he was younger he said that he would marry me and I agreed with him. He always told the truth, so I believed him when he said that. That was before we figured out that he was a Prince. Now all that he said about us was a lie.
He glanced at me nervously; I pretended I didn't see him do anything. He must have remembered what he said before.
Jessica frowned, that announcement must have ruined her plans.
I looked up at Jessica and saw that she was glaring at me again. I saw that Prince Adam was also looking at me. He did a little smile with sad, sorry eyes. I looked back down at my food and played with my left over mashed potatoes.
"Jessica?" Prince Adam asked.
"Yes," she said, batting her eyelashes.
"Would you like to be my escort to the ball in a few days?"
She smiled and looked at me, "My pleasure."
"Thank you," he said going back to his meal.
I glared at my mashed potatoes.
"Do you need more potatoes?" Jessica asked smiling at me.
Great, she has a plan.
"Ummm, no than-"
"I insist," she said, grabbing a big scoopful of mashed potatoes. She reached over and dumped it.
But instead of it landing on my plate it landed on my dress. Everyone got quiet at the table. I just sat there shocked.
"Would you like some gravy with that?" She said pouring gravy on my dress.
This dress was given to me by the Prince and she knew that.
"Please excuse me," I said with my head down. I stood up and curtsied. I saw my grandmother shaking her head. I quickly walk towards the exit. Once I got out of the room, tears rolled down my cheeks.
"Excuse me, but what is wrong?"
It was the queen.
I quickly wiped my tears away.
"Nothing 'mam" I curtsied and walked away towards the maids headquarters.
I heard the door open.
"Adam, what happened to her?" The queen asked.
"Ask the maids in there, which way did she go?"
I heard footsteps coming from behind me.
"Juliet?"
I needed to hide. I entered a room to the right. I put my ear to the door and I heard footsteps pass by. I sighed. Close one.
I turned around. I was in a small closet with dresses. Why are there dresses in here? I changed into a different dress that fell above my knees. I left the closet from the door on the other side. I was in a room filled with books and a grand piano in the middle. I remember that my mother taught me how to play when I was younger. I tried not to think about her. I walk over to the piano and pressed a key. I then played a chord and then played a slow, sad song. Just when I ended a song, I heard a door open. I quickly ran back to the closet door and peeked out.
"Hello?" Prince Adam said. He walked over to the piano and touched it. He felt the seat.
"I know you're here," He called out. He swiped something from the seat. Mashed potatoes. Some must have gotten on my dress when I changed.
He smiled and whispered, "Juliet"
He looked at the piano and said, "Your mother taught you. I watched you as she taught you, you still play beautifully."
I smiled. Even though I know he lied to me once about something important to me; I knew that he was telling the truth.
