02 | Fish out of water (edited)
Fluttering her eyelashes open slowly, Isabella awakens to the bright light of morning. Rubbing her eyes sleepily and blinking a few times she takes a moment before getting out of bed, not noticing the figure at the foot of it. When she does finally take notice, she screams, the scare causing her to fall. Sprawled out on the floor, she hears a fit of giggles and know exactly who her intruder is: her bestfriend, Abi.
Groaning, she gets up grumbling her displeasure. "Don't ever do that again." She says in a threatening tone as her bestfriend looks at her in amusement.
"No promises." Abi laughs.
"So what did you want? Or did you come here just to annoy me?" Isabella asks, sitting on her bed to face Abi.
"Yeah, pretty much." Abi replies, shrugging her shoulders. A small smile playing on her lips.
"Creep." Isabella retorts.
"If I apologise will you make me breakfast? Pleaseeee." Abi asks, holding Isabella's arm in hope.
Still half asleep, Isabella just nods her head.
"Okay I'm sorry for watching you sleep and for making you fall off the bed." Abi says sincerely, although the twinkle in her eye was obvious.
"If it was anyone else I would have gone mad you know that right?" Isabella says to her, earning an earnest nod from Abi. "Okay, lets go to breakfast." She says, pushing herself up off the bed.
They head outside, and go into the main tent that is used for cooking. Standing at the doorway, they exchange a sideways glance, taking in the scene before them. Lucas is stood in the middle of the kitchen, covered head to toe with batter. Next to him is Paige who is shouting loudly in his ear.
"No Lucas, I told you to-" she shouts, shaking his arm, trying to get his attention. But she is cut of as the lid of the blender goes flying off, for the second time, clanging as it hits the floor. The gooey mixture inside goes everywhere. Isabella and Abi dodge out of the way, just in time, as a massive chunk of whatever it is they are making comes flying straight at them.
Isabella shouts over the noise of the blender. "Lucas, turn it off then, you idiot!" He whips his head around to face her, blinks twice, before turning back around. Studying her for a second out of shock at being caught making such a mess and appreciating her beauty even in the early morning, before turning to switch it off, fumbling with the machine desperately.
Seriously, have some urgency dude Isabella thought as more mixture flew about the room.
"Where is the damn button?" He grumbles, as more mixture lands on him. Isabella walks up to him and presses the very obvious large pink button on the side of the blender, causing him to grumble some more.
"A thank you would be nice." She says, smiling at him. He mumbles a thank you as he tries to clean up the mess he made.
"Umm, Lucas?" Isabella asks. "What were you trying to make." He just looks down embarrassed.
Paige turns to look at her. "He was trying to make pancakes." She giggles to herself.
Isabella shakes her head in laughter. "You know, it would have been wise to wait for the person who actually knows how to cook pancakes." She says, crossing her arms, a mischievous glint in her eyes. Lucas just stares at her, a look that he meant as affection, but Isabella interprets as him being dumbfounded. To Lucas, her laughter was the most beautiful sound and he did not regret the mess he made if it meant the music that left her lips was a result.
"Lucas, clean up your mess and I'll make the pancakes." She says before turning to face the others. "And anyone else who wants to help this idiot clean go ahead." She laughs out as she turns to the blender, trying to get the weird pancake mix out.
Abi and Paige look at one another, before looking around the room. "Uh, I think Lucas will manage fine on his own." Abi is the first to say. Isabella turns, raising an eyebrow at the comment, earning her a shrug and giggle from Abi.
Paige darts over to Isabella, grabbing her leg rather roughly. "Bell can I help? I want to help and when I tried to help Lucas, he just made a mess." She says pleadingly. Pulling a chair over, Isabella become Paige to sit.
At the other side of the room, Lucas was pouting over the mess he made and the fact no one came to help.
"Really Abi? I thought you were better than that." He says sourly, pouting and crossing his arms in mock upset. Such a child Isabella thinks, watching the scene and finding it rather adorable. Abi shakes her head, making her way quickly over to where Lucas was. She scrapes she pancake mix off the walls of the tent, huffing as she does. Isabella lets out a small chuckle before turning to make pancakes with Paige.
Once made, Isabella sets the pancakes down on the centre of the small fold down table up. Before she can announce they're ready, everyone dives in, stuffing their faces with the fluffy maple coated heaven. Half annoyed, half pleased by their eagerness to eat her pancakes, she smiles and grabs one for herself, before the vultures get to them all. She eats at a much more normal pace than those in front of her. They were eating like a pack of wolves she thought- she wasn't even sure if they chewed before swallowing.
"Bella, you make the best pancakes I've ever tasted." Lucas says as he suppresses a moan, eliciting a giggle from Isabella. Looking around the table, she sees Abi stuffing her face in a similar fashion, bliss on her face at the taste of the golden bites. Paige on the other hand, must be trying to become one with the pancake, because she is absolutely covered in it.
Abi looks up from her plate, half a pancake still there. "Bella, you wanna go training after this?" She asks, smiling, causing Isabella to grin in response.
"Yeah! I'd love to." Isabella says enthusiastically. Lucas opens his mouth to speak but she stops him. The thought of joining them for training after having these wonderful pancakes would set him up for a good day Lucas thought. Besides spending more time with his friends wasn't necessarily bad. Isabella knew he would come up with some silly excuse as to why he should come with them, and knowing she wouldn't be able to refuse him, she stopped him before the words left his mouth. "Lucas, you are not coming. If you haven't forgotten, you have stitches in the side of your head, if you train you could open them back up again." She says sternly in her mother tone. Obsessing over the thought of herself as his mother and feeling nauseated by it, she lost focus on the conversation at hand.
Lucas gives her a glare, which softened to his gentle blue hue, that Isabella simply adored. A moment passed as they just started at one another, both thinking about how much they liked the colour of each others eyes before thinking maybe they were being a little too weird.
Abi cleared her throat. Jealously coated her face but neither of the pair noticed it. Abi had had feelings for Lucas for a while now and was planning to tell him soon but every time she plucked up the courage, he had to leave or Isabella was there. She wished that Lucas could she how much she loved him, how much she could give him. After all, she was like him and she knew his secret. She knew that it would tear Isabella apart and why they had to keep it from her was a mystery, to almost everyone in camp really, but it was Alpha's orders after all. She had thought about telling her best friend, about her feeling for Lucas, and about the secret but she couldn't betray the trust of the group and well, she couldn't quite bring herself to admit her feelings for the boy she sat beside, out of fear of loosing both of her best friends.
Blushing awkwardly at the realisation that she had just been staring at Lucas for goddess knows how long, Isabella stood up, a little too quickly, almost knocking one of the plates off the table. "Well then, I'll be off, see you later, Paige, Lucas." She says hastily as she practically runs out of the room. Abi on her trail. Abi jogs to catch up to her, Isabella slowing to match her pace, till they walk at the same speed.
Isabella turns to face Abi. "So, where we training?" She ask as they walk through camp.
"The clearing in the woods, just past the lake." Abi replies. Then adds. "The twins are there along with some others." Which earns her a groan from Isabella, causing Abi to giggle in response. The twins are Isabella's cousins. Of course she loves them, they're family, but they love to get on her nerves. They're the type of people to always make jokes and pull pranks as a means of showing affection.
This part of the forest is lush with growth, moss coats the trees and wild plants and flowers scatter amongst the grass like glitter. Ahead of them, a large arched log looms over the path. The path snakes around its base and the girls have to duck to get under the fallen log. The view of thick foliage opens up to the clearing. Beaming down, the sun shines down its sweltering rays, right into the centre of the clearing, highlighting the space and the people in it. There are six people there currently; Daisy and Charlie, who are Lucas's parents. Paul and Lily, who are the twins parents and Isabella's aunt and uncle, and the twins themselves, Jack and Jamie.
Jack is the youngest and has slightly lighter eyes than his brother, but the same auburn brown hair. Jack has a scar on his head and to this day, no one knows where he got it from. Jamie is the oldest and he never lets anyone forget it. He has much darker eyes, which complement his dark hair better.
Isabella and Abi walk over and stand beside Jack and Jamie. Jack jabs Isabella in the arm, turning to look her dead in the eyes. "Hey cous, so... how is his royal princess doing with his deadly injury and all that?" Jack says wiggling his eyebrows in mock amusement. Isabella manages to stifle a smirk, but Jamie and Abi burst out in laughter, which sets Isabella off and soon they're are all belly laughing at each other laughs.
Isabella takes a few deep breaths, in an attempt to calm herself down and regulate her breathing. It would be rather embarrassing to have an asthma attack because she was laughing too hard. "His royal princess is doing great thanks to my amazing cooking skills." She says with a smile.
Jack's eyes go wide. "Bella?! What have you done? You know the consequences for poisoning someone as strong and mighty as princess Lucas? He screeches, whilst laughing.
"Me? Poising my best friend? Never..." Isabella says, with just a tiny twinge of playfulness in her voice, knowing full well, if given the chance, she would put something awful in his pancake. Pranking must run in the family.
Frowning Jack says sadly, "But Bella... I thought I was your best friend." Looking into his brownish eyes, Isabella frowns, shaking her head. He smiles back at her, giving her a cuff around the head.
"Are you kids quite done?" Charlie says, almost more as a statement than a question, like he is demanding everyone's attention. Everyone instantly quietens and turns to face him. Isabella follows suit, keeping her mouth clamped firmly shut. She isn't sure why but everyone listens to her uncle like he's the goddamn king.
Training begins with running around the forest on a laid out track, three times. Isabella and Abi lag at the back with Jamie and Jack just ahead of them, and the adults ahead of them. Isabella's pants breathlessly, as dizziness hits her. Her asthma doing nothing to help the ache that burns through her body. Pushing on, determined to not fall last, again, Isabella barely manages the three laps, her asthma kicking in full swing. The training session is halfway done at this point and she can barely get the oxygen to her lungs to continue on. Wishing for death Isabella wonders why she thought today would by some miracle be easier than any previous training she had done. Every time she believes she'll do better than the last and quite often she does worse.
"You tired Bella? We can have a break if you want." Daisy's kind voice interrupts her deep thoughts. Isabella turns to her, faking a smile, determined to come across strong despite the fact she's panting like a dehydrated dog.
"No, it's okay, I can keep going." She states confidently, in between gasping breaths, widening my smile. However, the truth is she wants nothing more than to drop to the floor to fill her lungs with the sweet-tasting oxygen that her body is starved of. She can barely breathe as her muscles burn. She had yet again, forgotten her inhaler.
"Okay, if you're sure sweetheart." Daisy says, but the doubt laced behind her words are louder than a canon, as she tries to hide her disbelief for Isabella's sake. Daisy knows the girl struggles, but she also knows she doesn't want to lack behind, be the runt of the pack if you will, so she just nods her agreement before turning away to join her husband.
Isabella smiles at her departing figure, before jogging over to her friends. Abi gives her a nod signalling her approach, causing the twins' head to swivel around, to see who she saw. Jamie is the one to make the first comment. "Bella, babes, you okay? You look like you're gonna pass out." Concern evident in his voice despite his playful tone.
Jack smirks at his brothers comment causing Abi to hit them both around the head. "You guys, she is fine. This is Bella, we are talking about." She says, moving to stand beside her, holding her arm to support her weakening legs, whilst making it look like a supportive gesture.
Charlie's voice booms across the clearing. "Good, because we are moving on now. Workout next. I want two hundred press-ups, sit-ups and burpees."
Isabella's face pales when she hears what Charlie has in store. Her thoughts race appalled at his request, she plans her death in the short seconds that follow. "He wants us to do what? Two hundred mother fucking press-ups? And there's the sit ups and burpees. Is he insane? Oh my god, I'm going to die. Well it was nice knowing you. Tell my family I love them." Isabella says aloud unbeknownst to her.
"Uhh Bella? You said that out loud." Jack whispers to her.
Shit. Double shit. No, quadrillion shit with cream, cherries and sprinkles on top. I'm so dead. She thinks to herself.
"What was that Bella?" Charlie demanded.
"Nothing sir, I was saying how much I was looking forwards to the workout." She says boldly, her face burning at the fact she was caught bad-mouthing. She turns to look at her feet sheepishly, and the attention turns away from her as the workout begins.
"Bella, I swear one day you're gonna get in serious trouble, you need to know when to keep your gob shut, you know what Charlie's like when it comes to respect." Jack whisper-shouts to her.
"I know." She reply, smirking. Isabella often speaks without thinking and it is something she tries- and fails to change. At this point she has accepted she must live with it and instead focus on the amusement of it as to not fear for her life every time she speaks. Anxiety is a bitch and she's better off trying to avoid it where possible.
About halfway through the workout, Charlie walks past to see how the group is doing- if they are to his critique or not. Isabella's body burns as she works her muscles way past their limit, to her it feels like her skin is disintegrating from her body, exposing the raw muscle beneath. Her technique is sloppy due to the pain and Charlie notices, letting out a disapproving huff. To him her asthma is irrelevant, if she comes to training she is expected to train to his standard and if it is too much for her then she can train alone in her own time. He has high expectations of his people and he lets it be known. Isabella pushes through the pain as Charlie's glaring gaze is upon her. She holds her breath until her walks away, where she almost collapses from the lack of oxygen, taking large gulps of the crisp forest air.
Her friends are struggling slightly with the exercises but not to the same extend, they don't have asthma and well, they aren't human so they have higher endurance, naturally. Abi throws Isabella a reassuring smile.
When the workout is finally complete, everyone flops to the floor in exhaustion. The adults watch amused as the kids lay on the ground, breathing heavily, like fish out of water. After about twenty minutes of laying on the floor and regaining body functions, they get up and head to camp. Isabella is hit with dizzying waves and her muscles scream for a break, but somehow she manages to walk all the way to camp with no help.
Finally entering the camp, Isabella looks around for people. Lucas comes galloping over to her side. "Hey Bella." He starts, "Woah you look like shit." He finishes, genuine concern rippling through his features.
"Thanks Luca, your really helping." She say smiling, but it doesn't comes out as she intended, instead escaping her lips barely as a whisper.
"Bella, are you actually okay?" He asks, genuine concern evident in his eyes, as Isabella sways on her feet. She catches herself just as she feels like she is about to slip.
Jack spots the pair and comes over, Jamie at his side. Grinning mischievously, he winks at Isabella before turning to address Lucas. "Wow so the Princess lives." He jokes, continuing from his earlier comment, causing Jamie to let a small smirk play on his lips. Isabella tries to find amusement in the situation but finds herself hit with another wave of dizziness. Thinking it's probably her asthma, she thinks nothing of it, until another wave of nausea hits her. It causes her knees to go weak, her skin burning hotter than hellfire. Her eyes glaze over and she hits the floor before she realises. Her friends crowd her in panic, but she can't see them, can't hear them. All she sees is a blurry darkness. Throwing her head around in discomfort as all her senses mute.
Waves of whispers and murmurs wash at her ears, but the words aren't processed as she further into the dull fog. The noise fades into a gentle buzz, as the darkness wraps her in its claws, consuming her soul and mind until she slips into a peaceful nothingness.
