Chapter 15
Elle had finally completed the transformation. Her head was pounding harder than a locomotive on train tracks. It was difficult to focus on her surroundings but she knew she wasn't home. The Victorian style room and high ceilings were definitely not anything she was used to seeing.
Elle tried pushing off the covers but she was quickly hit with a heat flash making her regret getting up. Gentle hands helped her steady. Elle looked up and found two beautiful blue grey eyes staring back down at her.
"You need more rest." His velvet voice was soothing.
"Where am I?" She couldn't remember much.
The last think she could concentrate on was Deva. Deva was alive.
"Where's Deva? Is she ok?"
The beautiful stranger nodded. "Deva's fine. You're safe. All you need to focus on now is getting better."
She was fine. Deva was ok. That put her mind at ease but where was she? Why couldn't she remember anything?
"Here drink this. It will help you get your strength back." He handed her a white foamed cup with a straw.
Elle was so thirsty and hungry she didn't even care to ask what it was. The liquid slid down her throat and satisfied her every taste bud. It was nothing she had before but the strong taste of iron made her question.
"Is this blood?" She was afraid to ask because she was enjoying it so much.
He nodded never breaking his gaze. He was studying her.
Blood? That was so wrong. It was sick and twisted yet she couldn't put it down. She loved the taste and wanted more. The cup was emptied in seconds.
"What the hell is wrong with me?"
He could see she was struggling with accepting the new reality.
His hand grasped hers. "You're no longer human Elle."
How did he know her name? "Who are you?"
His smile was warm and far too kind. "I'm Lucian, a friend of Deva's."
He looked so much like Adamarius. She remembered him as the one Deva brought with her. He was a lycan. What was Lucian?
"You're brothers with Darius, right? You're one of the princes?" Her memory was slowly coming back.
"Yes you're right." Lucian was surprised with how much she knew.
She dropped her gaze to her hands. "What did you mean by me no longer being human?"
"You were stabbed and you lost a lot of blood. Deva couldn't watch you die. She asked me to turn you into a vampire."
Elle shook her head. It had to be a sick joke. She thought Deva was lying about that part. How could this happen?
"So you're trying to tell me I'm a vampire." Every word sounded as ridiculous as it came out.
Lucian nodded.
Elle shut her eyes but nothing would block the confusion and denial. It was insane but what else could explain the reason for her drinking blood.
"How," her voice broke. She wanted to cry again. "How is this even possible?"
Lucian cupped her face and forced her to look up at him. "I know this is a lot to take in but you are not alone. You don't have to go through this on your own."
Tears spilled down but Elle nodded anyway.
Lucian waited patiently by her side till her distress had finally past.
"You need more rest." He stood.
Before he could make it to the door Elle spoke, "Don't go."
She was weak, confused, and afraid. Lucian couldn't refuse her. She reminded him so much of Deva. Was it wrong for him to mix those same emotions? He sat back on the chair next to the bed and watched as she stubbornly fought back the sleep.
"How many more vampires have you made?"
"None. You are the first." Lucian had no reason or passion to create another vampire. It was a burden and for some a curse to be what they were.
Elle's brown hazel eyes searched his. They were a replica of Deva's.
"Why do it then? Why start with me?"
Lucian exhaled and cast his head down. "I have trouble saying no to your sister."
He clawed through his hair like he was struggling with the battle of the century.
"Really?"
For some reason he knew Elle would only be more curious to find things out. Deva was the same in that way.
Lucian couldn't bring himself to look up at her when he answered. "Deva is a very special person."
"You love her." She could see it was all coming from the heart.
"Yes." His soft reply made her feel sorry for him.
Deva chose his brother, Darius. Heartache was the worst thing to get other. Elle twisted to position herself more comfortably.
"She always knew how to capture a heart but never how to release it."
Lucian watched her finally drift to sleep. He exhaled and couldn't comprehend what life would be like with both of them in his life.
When Elle opened her eyes again, two hours later, she was relieved to see Deva.
Deva was anxiously hovering over her. "Are you ok? How do you feel?"
"I'm fine Dev. I'm still a little weak but I'm guessing that’s normal since I was only stabbed a few hours ago."
"I'm sorry it happened. It's all my fault. I'm so sorry."
Deva’s babbling was caused by to the guilt.
“I’m sorry I dragged you into this world. I couldn’t…” Her eyes filled with sadness and regret
Maybe she should have been less selfish. Elle deserved an honest death to an everlasting afterlife. Living the rest of her life as a bloodthirsty vampire was no one’s ideal existence. They were raised on faith and the Holy Scripture. She condemned her sister to a lifetime of dreadful sin.
Deva never should have returned home. Elle wouldn’t have been hurt and turned.
She blamed no one but herself.
"Shhh Deva it's not your fault. You couldn't have predicted it."
Deva shook her head, punishing herself. "I should have stayed away-"
Elle moved closer and threw her arms around her sister; comforting her negative thoughts.
“I know Deva. You couldn’t watch your only sister die. I know.”
Deva pushed back. “I’m so stupid-“
"Don't," Elle wiped her tears. "I missed you so much. I don't care what happened to me or why but I don't regret seeing you...and having you in my life again. If I was in your shoes I would have done anything to keep you alive. I don’t hate you Deva. Please don’t feel guilty. I understand why you did it.”
A small sense of relief numbed her pain.
“I never wanted this for you Elle. I never wanted this for myself. How can you ever forgive me? I was stupid and selfish turning you into this creature.”
Elle took a deep breath and prayed for the right words.
“No don’t. Don’t start playing that card Deva. I love you. I could never hate you for saving me the only way you knew how. I didn’t want to die. You saved me Deva. Okay? Do you hear me? You saved me and I’m alive because of you.”
The burden was still weighing on her back up at least Elle didn’t hate her.
“I’m just so glad you are okay. I’ve missed you so much Elle.”
“I know baby sis. I missed you too.” Elle rested her aching bones back on the headboard. “So you weren’t kidding about the whole vampire thing, huh?”
Deva laughed. She couldn’t believe all this happened so quickly. In the beginning she never thought she would see her family again and now her sister was a vampire and was staying at the castle. It was unreal.
"Nope. It's all real. The vampires, the Lycans, the kingdom, the princes-"
"Darius?" The look on Elle's face was suspicious and quite curious.
"Yes, he's real too."
Before Elle could ask her anymore questions Adamarius knocked on the door and walked in.
"How are you feeling?"
Elle couldn’t make up her mind about him yet, but knew she had to give him a chance for Deva’s sake.
“I'm a little tired but I'll survive."
"Most vampires do," he replied.
"Yeah, I'm going to have to get used to that." Vampire had a whole new meaning in this world.
Deva was avoiding his eyes but she could feel his stare like fire burning her skin. He was exuding more than just worry for her small display of theatrical ability.
'Deva you've had a long day. You and your sister both need rest.' Adamarius spoke to her through their mind link.
She wanted to ignore him. She was afraid to leave her sister's side. What if she disappeared? What if something terrible happened again?
"Deva you don't have to babysit me. I'm going back to sleep anyway. I'm no fun when I'm sleeping." It was like Elle read his mind.
Deva hesitated but kissed her sister's cheek and got up. "I'll see you tomorrow."
She walked out with Adamarius closely following. He didn't dare talk to her until they were in her room.
"Are you alright?"His question was expected.
"Do I look alright?"
"Don't patronize me Deva. You did something today that was far beyond our comprehension."
Deva threw her jacket on the floor. She couldn't help the anger and frustration growing inside of her.
"Beyond your comprehension? How do you think I felt? I sucked the life out of two people and I didn't even bat an eye. I enjoyed it and I dare say I even loved it."
Adamarius could also sense her freight. She was scared of her new found powers.
"You were afraid."
Deva shut her eyes, ultimately to shut his prying out too. Adamarius pulled her into his arms and gradually felt her give in to his gentle approach.
"I was afraid I couldn't stop. I didn't want to hurt you too."
He kissed her hair. "I'm fine. You're fine and everything is going to be ok."
"You don't know that."
Adamarius cupped her face. "I won't let anything happen to you. I promise."
She just couldn’t believe him. “I don’t know how I did it Marius. It felt so natural, like I’ve done it before. Their energy was calling to me. I wanted to take their lives. I wanted them to suffer. I wanted to drain everything out of their miserable lives.”
Adamarius knew of the potential she had but she always went beyond his expectations. He wanted the world for her. He just didn’t want her to looser herself in the process.
Adamarius lifted her up off the floor and took her to bed.
“They deserved to die for what they had done to you,” he tried to justify.
Deva snuggled closer to his chest. She needed his warmth and comfort. “Why do you love me?”
Adamarius got up on his elbow so he could see her face. Why would she bring up such a question? He was taken by surprise and it irritated him that he couldn’t figure out what was going on in her pretty little head.
“Deva what is bringing this about?”
It was hard confessing things to him. She was working so hard to build walls to block him out mentally. Why couldn’t he just answer her?
“Am I still the person you loved? Could you still love me if I become someone else?”
“Deva open your eyes.”
She did and almost melted at the sight of his deep sincere green orbs.
“I will love you till the end of the earth, no matter what or who you are. I love everything about you. Nothing, and I mean nothing, could ever stop me from loving you.”
She needed his kiss to seal his promise. “Promise me.”
He kissed her back. “I promise, my love.”
Elle tossed in her sleep for the last time. She couldn't do it anymore. She had to get out of that room. It was pitch black but yet she could still see; it was outlines of objects. Nothing explained it better than her new vampire abilities.
She was wandering the castle aimlessly till she walked out onto a balcony. The fresh breeze brushing against her skin was exactly what she needed.
"Feels good doesn't it?"
His startling voice made her jump back. He looked like Lucian but she knew he had two other identical brothers. Elle wasn't sure which one he was.
"Lucian?"
The curve of his lips went up. "I'm Darius. We haven't been properly introduced."
"No but I already feel like I know you."
Darius raised a brow. "Is that so?"
"Deva was never good at hiding secrets from me. I can read her like an open book." Elle decided to sit down.
"I guess it runs in the family." Deva also had a way of seeing through people. "And what is it she tried hiding from you?"
Elle's deep brown eyes were clear as day. "She still loves you."
It was almost hard for him to believe.
"I don't know all the details of your relationship but I know there is still something there."
Darius denied the claim. Not but a few days ago she wanted to send him away. He wondered if that motive had changed since his recent release from his prior duties. Darius was no longer attached to Red.
"I don't know. I've messed things up pretty well."
Elle smiled, looking up at the moon. “She changed so much since the last time I saw her. She’s stronger now, tougher. But she’s still the same outspoken, easily heartbroken girl that just wants to be loved.”
Darius wasn’t sure if he should confide in her but he sensed that he could.
“I’ve loved her since the moment I met her and have continuously broken her heart. I was stupid and it is all my fault.”
“Do you still love her?”
“With all my heart.” There was no room for doubt in his voice.
“Then don’t just give up. She’s worth fighting for.”
Darius agreed. Deva was definitely worth fighting the kingdom for.
