Chapter Twenty Nine

Lyra sat next to the man she had healed. He was still sitting in his bed. Hannah had insisted on a big lunch, and being rather hungry, Lyra didn't protest. She chuckled lightly as she ate some of the mashed potatoes. The man she had healed's name was Caspar. He had been injured in a robbery by a couple soldiers. Despite his seemingly aggressive demeanor, he was very nice, and Lyra found him to be good company. He often told his war stories, much to Lyra's amusement.

"So, I was sitting there, gettin' the cannon ready, and this here soldier thinks he's gonna test me eh? This bloke comes up with his little sword yeah, and he thinks he can defend against my axe! Aunt Hannah, where's my axe?" He called. "I don't think that would be a good idea to have right now, dear." She said, dropping the largest pastry Lyra had ever seen onto her plate. Lyra couldn't help but lick her lips.

"Hannah, you don't have to-" "Eat dear." Hannah's voice made it seem like more of a command then a suggestion, so Lyra obeyed. Caspar raised his hand, wincing slightly with his bandage. "So this soldier, yeah. He trying to mess with me, eh? I took the butt of my axe, and knocked him into next week. Haha, you should've seen his face." Lyra laughed lightly, brushing the pastry crumbs off her lips.

Caspar laughed, a deep chortle of mirth. "Ah, the good old days. And I kept fightin' them two soldiers, see, cause I survived so many wars and such, and to think I'd be taken down by a couple of weaklings on guard duty? I think not!" Lyra half-smiled. The man was fun to listen too. "I think not either, Mr. Caspar."

Caspar clapped an arm on Lyra's back. "And I would be gone if it weren't for this tiny hero right here! This mighty hero, one of conquered earths, the mighty powerful...um..." "Lyra, sir." "Lyra sir!" "Just Lyra." "Just Lyra!" "Lyra." "Lyra! I owe you my gratitude."

"Thank you sir, but I just acted on instinct." "And wisely your instinct led you." "Thank you sir." She smiled as she shook the man's hand, which was twice as large as hers. "I hope we can be comrades!" "I think friends would do, sir." "Close enough. Aunt Hannah, where did you find her?"

Hannah was getting some medicine from a tray. "Actually it was General Lilia Brooks who found her. She was with Fox. An air ship had bombed them." Caspar rubbed his chin. "An airship, you say? So you have been on the fields of battle!" "Not quite, sir. Fox and I were just traveling." "Really?" "Yes. I'm wanted by the King."

Caspar promptly chortled. "Well, aren't we all?" Hannah chuckled, putting the medicine in a cup. "Yes we are, dear." She gave him the cup. "A bit of medicine. You need your rest dear." Caspar drank the whole thing in one gulp. As his eyes drooped, he smiled sleepily at Lyra. "Thanks for being my friend."

Then Caspar fell asleep, snoring loudly. Hannah smiled at Lyra. "He can be quite passionate." "I can see that." "Alright, dear. Get some sleep. At least take a nap before dinner. It'll be coming soon." "Okay Hannah. I'll see you soon."

"Thanks dear. Goodbye." "Goodbye."
