Chapter Seventeen
Lyra was jolly while walking with Barley and Fox. They both laughed and jested, and Lyra didn't feel as shy as she was before in front of Fox. Lyra felt as if she'd known the two for her whole life.
Lyra watched the sights go by, interested. It made her wonder how the air ship had gotten to the king's palace in only one and a half days.
The three also passed some housings, where people would peacefully plant their crop, while playing their tiny wooden instruments.
Lyra sighed, and turned to Barley. "When do you think we'll make it? To Fenrir I mean?" Barley counted on his fingers. "Four days, tops." Lyra rubbed the back of her neck. "America is such a beautiful place. It's too bad the king has ravaged most of it." Fox grunted, and then bit into a red apple, making a loud crunch. "I even liked America better when the East Continents took over. At least there wasn't as much blood spilt. Sure, at least our country's independent again, but the monarchy's ruined us."
Barley nodded grimly. "Stupid lineage. I hope the king's son isn't as gruesome." Lyra tilted her head. "The king had a son?" Fox nodded. "News didn't get around as much to the outer states, like Wisconsin. And Fenrir is pretty remote, even for Wisconsin. His son's name is Borris. And I had to do a lot of snooping about to find that much. You see, the king's view to keep an iron fist on the country, is to make sure not to have any weaknesses. His son is a weakness, so he keeps him hidden in some kind of country place very far from any cities. He lives there along with the queen, Silvy."
"Who would marry him?" Lyra asked, snickering. "Was probably forced." A bit of laughter broke out. "Ly, don't you read any history books?" Fox asked. "Ly? And also, it's hard to scrape up a good bit of books like that."
Fox shrugged, taking another bite of her apple. Barley was quiet, and Lyra watched as he looked at the sights. Barley was rather quiet, she gathered. She could respect that.
Barley looked at Lyra. "I wonder if America will ever be the same." Lyra was about to answer, but she was interrupted by a low hum. "Everyone get down! It's a patrol ship!" Fox yelped. Fox and Barely seemed to know what to do, so she followed. The two ran to a trench in the ground.
Lyra saw that it was an irrigation system, pooling into the farms, and at least neck deep. She hesitated as she stood near the edge. Fox jumped in immediately, splashing water droplets everywhere. Her head popped up. "Come on! Before their scanners find us!" She hissed. Barley took Lyra's hand. "Together?" Lyra squeezed his hand. "Together."
They both jumped.
Lyra felt the water hit her skin, and her feet scraped the dirt covered floor. Lyra saw the huge air ship fly past. It had the symbol of the king on it, a big crown with an X.
Fox and Barley dived under as it flew near them, and Lyra followed suit. The cold water felt both shocking and refreshing on her skin. It must've been the minerals. She still heard the hum of the ship as it passed, even underwater. Her lungs began to burn, and she longed for air. Lyra knew the ship was still above them, but she couldn't go up. Not now.
Soon, Lyra thought she would pass out, and then she was roughly pulled on to land. She saw Barley's worried face. "You were down there for a long time. I thought you were in trouble. Don't worry. The air ship passed."
Lyra nodded, wringing out her black hair.
Fox was definitely the expert swimmer. She didn't even look fazed. Lyra sighed. "That was pretty intense. I don't really like swimming." Lyra heard Fox snort. She chuckled, and stood. "Let's get out of here."
Barley and Fox then stood. "One problem." Barley pointed towards the distance. The place that Barley and Lyra decided to go around: the path to avoid the area was completely filled with guards.
