chapter five | late-night grave robbing

Carmen didn't have any time to take a closer look at her dad's journal or explain to Austin about the possibility of treasure being buried somewhere on the island after her mom and Brian came home and saw the state of their house and shed. Brian was quick to go back out and get a deputy to look at the scene, and much to Carmen's surprise, someone did come to the Cut to file a report. However, that was as far as the case would go, because like Austin said before, none of them really cared if someone broke into a Pogue's house, because that seemed to be expected to happen in the Cut.

"I swear, if I catch the son of a bitch who did this--" Brian started to say, his face turning red.

"Calm down, Brian," Donna said in an attempt to calm him down. "I'm sure the sheriff's department will find whoever did this."

Carmen wanted to scoff at her words of reassurance, as it was almost laughable that her mother would even say them, knowing they wouldn't do shit about it.

Brian exhaled loudly and nodded his head. "Yeah, I hope they do." He looked over at Carmen. "Any idea where Alexis is?"

Carmen inhaled, trying not to think about the incident from hours ago. "She's with Maverick and some other locals," she simply answered. "Last time I saw her was at John B's."

"And why aren't you with them?" her mother spoke up.

"I got bored."

Brian nodded his head, as if he was ready to move on from the subject. "Okay, well, let's just go ahead and get this mess cleaned up without her."

"I can help," Austin offered.

"That'd be great. Thank you, Austin."

So the four spent the rest of the day cleaning up around the house, consisting of sweeping up glass and picking up clothes, books, and other knick knacks that were scattered all over the floor. As the sun just set and the night was slowly falling upon the island, Donna and Brian remained in the house to finish up, while Carmen and Austin headed outside to the shed and began organizing the mess. Carmen felt her eyes going to the crate full of her dad's treasure things every time she walked past it, ready to take a deeper look at what he wrote in his journal.

"Getting distracted?"

Carmen jumped and looked over at a grinning Austin. "Yeah, sorry. I can't help but think about what my dad wrote in his journal." She almost hated to admit that, but curiosity seemed to be getting the best of her.

He raised his eyebrows and his expression turned curious. "You think he's got anything about that buried treasure here on the island written in that journal?"

"I...I don't know," she confessed. "But if those men who came by John B's house and mine think our dads have something about it--"

"Wait, those men were at John B's, too?" Austin cut her off with wide eyes.

"Yeah, we were at the house when they showed up."

"Holy shit." He paused at the new piece of information. "And you're just telling me this now?"

"I was trying not to think about it," she protested. "Besides, no one got hurt."

"But someone could've gotten hurt."

"Except no one did." She shot him a warning look as a way to tell him to drop the subject.

Austin was silent for a moment as he went back to sweeping the floor. "So did you see them take anything?"

Carmen wanted to roll her eyes at the question, but huffed out a sigh instead. "Just some crates full of books and papers from Big John's office."

"Books about treasure?"

"No, about birds."

Austin shot her an annoyed look after hearing her sarcastic response. "Ha-ha, you're hilarious."

"So I've been told."

He shot her a small grin before continuing on. "Those men were looking for something else, weren't they?"

She froze in her spot, her mouth slightly opened from being thrown off by the question. "What?"

"You said earlier that maybe whatever the men were looking for wasn't here," he recalled. "So what were they looking for?"

Carmen silently cursed him for his good memory, slowly turning around to face him, though she knew she couldn't lie, as the guilt on her face made it obvious that she was hiding something. "A compass."

Austin raised his eyebrows. "A compass?"

"Well, not just any compass. It's one that John B found on that wreck in the marsh."

His expression turned shocked at her response. "He actually found that boat?"

"Yeah, and the same guys that came here and his house were also after him and the others yesterday while they were out there."

Austin exhaled, setting the broom down, as if he was trying to process what Carmen was telling him. "Wow. Okay. So everyone is wanting some random compass from a wreck because they think it's a clue to hidden treasure on the island."

"Pretty much," she confirmed, nodding her head.

"And what's on this compass that makes them think it's a clue?"

"Just the word 'Redfield' etched on the back of it."

He furrowed his eyebrows. "As in, the Redfield Lighthouse?"

She shrugged. "Maybe. But you know that's a common name around here."

"Yeah, it is." Suddenly, Austin's expression switched, as if a lightbulb went off in his head. "A name that we would find in a cemetery."

Carmen gave him a puzzled look. "So?"

"So what if that's where John B is going to look for the clue?"

She raised her eyebrows and leaned against the wall. "Why do we care if they go there?"

"Because they might not be the only ones going."

It only took a few seconds for the realization to hit her. "You think those men will go to the cemetery to look for the clue, too."

He nodded his head. "And if John B and the others run into them--"

"It won't end well."

Austin put the broom down and started to walk out of the shed. "Come on."

"Where are we going?" Carmen asked, following him out.

"To try and catch John B before he goes out to the cemetery."

"We don't even know if he's going there," she pointed out.

"It's still worth a shot to try and warn him."

Carmen was trying to find the words to argue with Austin as he began heading back to his house, most likely to get his truck and head out to John B's before it was too late. She wanted to stop him from getting himself involved, no matter how many times she tried telling herself that none of this was about some stupid treasure. Except her guts were telling her to go with him and follow along on whatever the hell this might be.

Maybe it's another sign, she thought. Or maybe I'm just fucking crazy.

Nevertheless, Carmen locked up the shed and dashed over to Austin's house, meeting him at the end of his driveway as he drove up in his truck, where he stopped for Carmen to climb in the passenger seat.

"Glad to see you changed your mind," he commented, hopping on the bike.

She rolled her eyes in response. "Let's just get this over with."

With a smirk, Austin drove onto the main road, heading toward the Chateau.

Neither of the teenagers said a word during the short drive, as they were more focused on telling John B about their discovery. But when they pulled up to the house and saw that the Twinkie was nowhere in the yard, the two couldn't help but panic a little.

"You think they're already at the cemetery?" Carmen asked.

"Only one way to find out," Austin replied, putting the truck in reverse and speeding down the road once again, driving into town this time.

Many thoughts began to swim around in Carmen's head, all of which were the many ways that going to the cemetery was a very bad idea. A part of her was starting to regret tagging along with Austin, but then she suddenly thought about Maverick and Alexis, knowing that they were with John B right now, and she didn't want to go any further with what could happen to them if she wasn't there to help.

"Do you really think they'll find something at the cemetery?" Carmen asked all of a sudden. "I mean, maybe there's nothing there and John B is just chasing a dead end."

Austin glanced over at Carmen, his eyebrows raised. "It sounds like you're having second thoughts," he pointed out.

"No, I just don't wanna waste any more of my time with this."

"What, with the idea that John B will find something in this cemetery that could lead to treasure?"

"Or another clue, then another clue, then another--"

"Okay, okay, I get it," he cut her off. "But are you sure this isn't about something else?"

Carmen shot him a puzzled look. "What do you mean?"

Austin didn't meet her eyes as he made it into town. "I'm just wondering if this talk about treasure is getting too personal for you, considering..."

She wondered why he didn't finish his sentence, then quickly figured out where he was going with it, in which she shook her head and kept her eyes on the road ahead. "It's not about him."

"Look, you know you can talk about it with me--"

"Well, I don't, so let's just drop it," she retorted.

After some hesitation, Austin finally nodded his head and accepted her response, continuing to drive through town without another word.

The rest of the ride to the cemetery didn't take long, though it felt that way to Carmen with the awkwardness settling in the truck. She was almost relieved to see the entrance, quickly hopping out once Austin parked his truck. Once the engine was cut off and he was out as well, the two looked around for the Twinkie or the men from earlier, but found the place empty.

"You think they already came by?" Austin inquired.

"I don't know," Carmen muttered. She took one more glance of her surroundings, which was enough time for her to see that no one was there and go to open the truck door on the passenger's side. "Well, no one's here, so let's go."

"Hold on," Austin stopped her. "I think I see something."

For a split second, Carmen turned around to see bright lights heading in their direction before Austin grabbed her by the arm and pulled her away from its view and to the other side of the truck. Carmen's heart was beating faster as the sound of another car pulled up, followed by the lights going out. She thought her heart was going to stop when all she could hear was footsteps getting closer and closer and--

"BOO!"

Both Carmen and Austin let out screams and jumped away from the voice, about to run off when they turned to their left and saw JJ hunched against the truck, his arm over his stomach as he laughed.

"Oh my God, you should've seen your faces!" he exclaimed, which only made him laugh harder.

Carmen let her heart rate go down before shooting JJ an irritated look and walked past him, tempted to whack him upside the head while doing so. "Not funny, JJ."

"Yeah, asshole," Austin added, following behind her.

When the two came around the car, they were met with John B, Pope, Kiara, Maverick, and Alexis standing by the Twinkie with flashlights in their hands.

"What are you two doing here?" John B spoke up.

Austin let out a nervous chuckle as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, believe it or not, we're kind of here for the same reason you are," he said.

John B raised his eyebrows in genuine surprise. "Wait, you know about--?"

"The compass? Yeah, I do. And I also know you're here to look at the Redfield mausoleum to see if there's a clue there."

"And we weren't sure if those men from earlier today knew to come here as well," Carmen added.

There was a pause as John B glanced over at the others. "Oh. Well, uh, the more the merrier, I guess."

JJ let out a scoff. "Speak for yourself. My cut's gettin' smaller now."

"That's what you get for scaring the shit out of us," Carmen retorted.

"Y'know what, maybe you shouldn't be sneaking around a cemetery at night. Have some common sense, there could be snakes out here." JJ sniffed the air and eyed her. "I can smell the cucumbers already."

Austin shot him a confused look. "Did you just say 'cucumbers?'"

"What, you've never heard of that? Are you even a true southern boy, Riggs?"

Kiara shook her head and glanced at Austin. "Just ignore him."

So the group of teenagers began making their way in the cemetery, walking further and further back away from the rows of tombstones. Everyone went back and forth commenting how scared they were being there and asking John B what the hell they were doing, all of which was done in hushed tones.

"Okay, so, you know how you're trying to remember a song and you can't remember who sings it?" John B spoke up. "So, Redfield. This whole time, I thought it was a place, right? But it's not a place." He paused and stopped in front of their destination, holding up the light so that it was shining at the very top of the mausoleum, revealing the name Redfield in all caps. "It's a person."

"Voi-effing-là," JJ muttered.

"See, my great-great grandmother Olivia Redfield. That was her maiden name."

The teenagers took a moment to stare at the mausoleum in front of them, along with the large branches tangled in front of the entrance.

"Guys, help me with the door," John B spoke up again, motioning the others to join him in getting the door open.

The rest of the boys stepped up and started helping John B by pushing the door, and the girls simply watched them struggle as the stone didn't move from its spot.

"Are you guys pushing?" Pope asked the others in annoyance.

"Yeah, we're pushing," John B answered through gritted teeth.

"Do you think we should help them?" Alexis questioned in a low voice.

"Nah, I think they got it," Carmen answered, despite the fact they did not have it. But it sure was entertaining to watch them put their backs into a door that refused to open.

"This door is, like, seven hundred pounds," Pope commented after another minute of attempting to move it. "It's not gonna budge."

"Look, we didn't come this far to get this far, all right?" JJ retorted.

Before anyone could say anything else--specifically Carmen in reference to JJ's remark--the sound of hissing broke through the bickering, followed by a large snake emerging from behind the hole of the door and slithering down in the grass, where the teens quickly moved out of its path.

"I told you I could smell cucumbers!" JJ exclaimed. "Take a whiff, Riggs!"

"Get away from it, JJ!" Pope shouted as he found himself standing close to Carmen, in which she grabbed a hold of his arm.

"That's a moccasin, all right. Ye olde Dr. Cottonmouth. Death in tall grass." JJ began barking at the snake as it wormed away from the group, with everyone fussing at him to shut up.

"You're gonna wake the dead, man!" Pope snapped.

"What, they're afraid of dogs," JJ protested. "Everyone knows that. And if there's one, there's probably dozens inside there."

"Oh my God, can you stop scaring the rest of us?" Kiara retorted.

JJ started barking again in response.

"Stop barking at the snakes!" John B finally said in a stern tone.

"I'm just makin' sure it's clear!"

"Okay, everyone, shut up!" Pope interjected, with Carmen letting go of his arm and taking a step toward John B. "We're not gonna get in there, all right? It's not budging. We should probably just go."

But no one turned around to head back. Instead, they continued to look at the door to see if there was any way to get in. By the way Kiara held her flashlight back to the hole of the mausoleum, it seemed like she had another idea.

"I can get through," she stated.

"What?" John B inquired. "No, no, no, no. You think you're gonna fit through the hole? That hole?"

"Look, this is about your dad," she pointed out. "And honestly, I really don't believe in it, much like some other people here, I'm sure." She paused and glanced over at the others, her eyes locked in with Carmen's a bit longer than everyone else, then back to John B. "But you deserve to know the truth."

So with a silent mutual agreement among the boys, they moved the branches away from the door, with John B and Pope holding them in place, while JJ leaned against the door with his hands out, ready to give Kiara a boost.

"Remind me what we're looking for?" she asked.

"You'll know when you see it," John B answered.

Kiara's expression remained blank as she handed Maverick her flashlight. "Okay, then."

"Be careful," Alexis added.

Kiara nodded her way, then placed a foot in JJ's hands, where she gave him no time to push her up onto the other side of the mausoleum. Maverick dropped the flashlight through the hole as the rest waited for her to say something.

"You alive?" John B called out as he looked in the hole. "You got, like, a heartbeat and everything?"

"So far!" she replied.

He nodded. "That's good. That's good."

"Uh...I need some more light."

"Okay, yeah, here, I gotcha." John B reached in and held his light for her.

"Did you find something?" JJ asked this time with much anticipation. "Is there gold?"

Carmen rolled her eyes at his last question.

"Oh my God," Kiara finally stated.

The suspense of what she discovered hung over the teenager, waiting around like little kids at a birthday party to see what presents there were to be opened. When she handed John B what was found, the suspense faded at the FedEx envelope with FOR BIRD written in black sharpie on the front.

"That's not gold," Pope commented.

"Well, should we have expected her to find it in there?" Austin pointed out.

"Yeah, that'd be too easy," Kiara added as she climbed out of the hole, wiping off the dust and dirt

"Holy shit," John B muttered as he stared down at the package, a small grin coming across his lips. "This is from my dad."

Kiara, Pope, Maverick, and Alexis shared the same hopeful look with him, while Carmen, Austin, and JJ were distracted by the sound of a vehicle getting louder.

"Uh oh," JJ said as he blew some smoke from his cigarette into the air. "Code red. Code red. Square groupers! Square groupers!"

The teenagers rushed to hide behind the mausoleum, with some of them scrambling to turn their flashlights off before they were spotted. JJ carefully peeked over when he heard men talking to each other.

"Do you think it's them?" Kiara asked.

"It's gotta be," Alexis said.

"Homie's got a gun," JJ commented, his voice cracking a bit.

"Screw this," Kiara stated, standing up and making a run for it, to which the others followed suit.

Carmen felt her heart racing with each step through the cemetery, keeping her eyes at the closed gate ahead of her. With some help from Austin and Maverick, she was able to push her body up and climb over, landing with a thud on the other side. It didn't take long for some of the others to get over as well, but they had to wait for one more Pogue that was having trouble.

"Guys, I'm stuck!" Pope called out, hanging onto the gate with his shorts caught at the top.

Kiara, Carmen, and Alexis went to go help, though Pope's panicked state only made it more difficult for them to get him down faster.

"You're gonna rip me," he kept saying over and over.

"Pope, don't move, okay?" JJ shouted from behind.

"Put the gun down, you idiot!" Austin snapped.

"Come on, you got it, Pope," Carmen attempted to assure him.

"I don't think I do!" he retorted.

But finally, Pope let go of the gate, with his shorts ripping off his body and hanging off the top. He didn't even try to salvage them, as they had no time before the men would eventually catch up.

"It's a little Tootsie Roll!" JJ commented.

The others laughed while running to the Twinkie and Austin's truck, with Pope covering himself as he hopped inside the van. Austin and Carmen got back to his truck, starting it up and speeding away, with the Twinkie following behind them not too long afterward.

"Holy shit," Austin broke the silence, panting. "That was fucking insane."

"I can't believe there was something inside that mausoleum," Carmen said. "I wonder what his dad left him inside that envelope."

"Well, I'm pretty sure we're about to find out."

After driving back through town and making it back to the Cut, he passed by his house and went right to the Chateau, where the Twinkie was pulling up right behind them. The teenagers headed inside, where they regrouped in the kitchen, where JJ grabbed a knife, two pieces of bread, and a jar of peanut butter, completely ignoring the spots of mold on as he took the knife and spread the peanut butter onto the bread.

"That bread had mold on it, like, three days ago," Pope told him with a new pair of shorts on.

JJ shrugged. "I'll just pull off the bad parts. Plus, mold is good for you. It's just a natural organism."

Carmen shot him a disgusted look as he took a bite into the sandwich. "¡Qué asqueroso!"

Sure enough, JJ gagged and spat out the piece of bread, and Carmen was tempted to laugh at him, but her eyes began to focus on John B as he unfolded a piece of paper from the envelope left for him, revealing a map of the North Carolina coast.

"Holy shit," John B mumbled.

"X marks the spot," Pope said, pointing at the small x written on the map right under the words Lighthouse and The Cut.

John B took a closer look at the coordinates jotted down next to the x, using his fingers to line up to see if they were accurate, which they were. "Wait, there's somethin' else in there." He pulled out a tape recorder, staring at it in awe.

"What's that?" JJ asked.

"It's a tape recorder, dumbass," Kiara retorted.

John B pressed the PLAY button on the side, where everyone gathered around the small kitchen table to listen to what was on the tape.

"Dear Bird..." Big John's voice started.

"Who's Bird?" JJ interrupted.

"That's what my dad called me," John B answered, not taking his eyes off the tape recorder.

"I hate to say, 'I told you so,' but I told you so. And you doubted your old man. I suspect at this moment, you're filled with guilt and self-loathing over our last fight, but don't kill yourself just yet kid. I didn't expect to find the Merchant, either."

The teens all glanced at one another while there was a pause filled with clattering sounds before Big John started speaking again.

"You were probably right to call me out. Wasn't exactly Father of the Decade. What can I say, kid. I could smell the barn. And hopefully, we're listenin' to this in our brand new sugar-shack down in Costa Rica, livin' off passive investments and pullin' on permits. If not, and you find this for less than optimal reasons, well, that's what the map is for. There she is, the wreck of the Merchant."

All of them looked back down at the x on the map, assuming that was where Big John figured the wreck was at.

"If somethin' happens to me, finish what I started. Go for the gold, kid. I love you, Bird, even if I didn't always act like it. There was a brief pause of silence before Big John stated, "I'll see you on the other side."

With that, static crackled on the tape before it reached the end and John B clicked the recorder off. While the others let out small laughs of surprise and grinned from ear to ear, John B stood up and walked away, though he collapsed against the door frame and began to sob.

"Holy shit, he did it!" JJ exclaimed, clueless of his best friend by the door frame. "Big John-- He found the Merchant--"

"JJ, can you please just...?" Kiara cut him off with a warning look on her face.

"Sorry."

For another moment, the teens remained silent as they let John B spill his emotions out, with Kiara and Maverick trying to comfort him while doing so. When he felt like there were no more tears left to cry, everyone headed outside and went down to the end of the pier, finding spots along the railings to sit on or lean against. Carmen chose to stand a bit farther away from the others, but enough to still be engaged with whatever conversation was brought up.

But for a while, no one said a word as they took sips of their beers and Kiara strung some chords on a ukulele that was laying around at the Chateau. It was a good way to end the night in peace, where the water was calm during this time of night.

"How much was it again?" JJ inquired, breaking the silence.

"Four hundred mil," Pope answered.

Everyone gave each other wide eyes at the number, almost being surreal that the treasure was worth that much.

JJ let out a sigh as he nodded. "All right, let's talk the split. Now, before we say 'evenly,' may I remind you that I am the only one that can properly defend us from those groupers who were after us." He showed off the gun in his hand. "Protection? Not cheap, okay?"

"You haven't trained," Pope pointed out. "You've done zero training."

"YouTube, bro! That's at least a five percent bump right there. Any objections? Didn't think so."

"Actually, I think all of us object to that," Austin chimed in.

"Oh, so I save all your asses from that moccasin and this is how you repay me?" He nodded his head again, acting as if he was offended. "Okay, okay. I see how it is."

Austin playfully rolled his eyes, along with Maverick and Alexis next to him. Carmen, however, wasn't in the mood to be amused at JJ's jokes.

"What are you gonna do with your hundred mil, Pope?" Kiara asked.

Pope took a moment to give it some thought, then finally nodded his head and responded with, "Pay for college in advance. And also, textbooks. Those are expensive."

At least someone has a good goal in mind, Carmen thought.

"What about you, Kie?" JJ asked her.

"Yeah, what does a socialist do when she's rich?" Pope added.

Carmen cracked a small smile at that, with Pope grinning her way as well.

Kiara chuckled and shrugged her shoulders in response. "Just wanna make a double album. About OBX, the Pogues. You know, the way Catch a Fire is about Kingston. Record it at Marley Studio, Peter Tosh producing."

"Peter Tosh is dead," Pope pointed out.

"Peter Tosh is dead, I know that. But the spirit of Peter Tosh will never die."

"Actually, I know what I'm gonna do," JJ cut back in. "I'm gonna get a big ass house on Figure Eight and go full Kook."

"You're gonna go full Kook?" Pope asked with amusement.

"Yup, gonna get a marble statue of myself, and then I'm gonna get a koi pond."

"Hell yeah," Austin exclaimed. "And once I buy out my uncle with my cut, then you and I can be neighbors."

"Well, that officially means I'm never visiting," Kiara joked.

"Oh, come on, it'd be fun," Austin assured her.

"Yeah, maybe I can get my old house back for me and my mom," Maverick spoke up. "She deserves to have a good life again."

Carmen's heart sank at her best friend's words about his mom, and it made her think about her dad and why a part of him wanted to look for any sort of treasure in the first place.

"I think it all sounds great," Alexis said with enthusiasm.

Pope turned his head and looked over at John B, who was keeping to himself. "What are you gonna do, JB?"

He took a moment before slowly turning his head and facing the rest of the group, where he had a weak smile as he said, "To going full Kook."

While exchanges of excitement were made among the teens, Carmen merely looked down at the dock below her, swirling her beer and listening to the beverage slosh inside the can.

"To going full Kook!" everyone else repeated, clinking their beer cans in the center of the circle.

Carmen turned around and walked down the dock and back to the house as the others continued on with their laughing and chatting about their new Kook fantasy. While the idea of going full Kook sounded appealing, she knew that it all came back to all of this being about some lost treasure, which she was trying to forget about before the thought of actually following clues that could lead to the Merchant got to her head. She couldn't drive herself crazy obsessing over this the same way her father did.

"Hey."

The girl spun her body at the sound of John B's voice, watching him approach her as he chucked his empty beer can on the ground. "Hi," she replied.

He cleared his throat and placed his hands in his short pockets. "I'm sorry for what I said about your dad. I shouldn't have brought him up."

Carmen took a gulp of her beer before speaking up. "It's okay. I'm sorry for what I said about your dad." She paused and let out a scoff. "Guess our daddy issues are catching up to us."

John B chuckled in response. "No shit."

She briefly grinned back at him, but it faded when she opened her mouth to talk again. "You were right about mine, though." She paused, waiting for him to say something, then continued on when he didn't. "I found some treasure-related things he left behind in my shed today."

His eyes lit up. "Was there anything about the Merchant?"

"I don't know. I only skimmed a few pages." Carmen felt her eyes water up. "Doesn't it bother you that our dads seem to love treasure hunting more than us?"

John B looked down at the grass, as if he didn't want Carmen to see his face. "Maybe there's just something about the adventure that excites them." He paused, lifting up his head. "And if I'm being honest, I kind of wanna feel that same excitement, too. Don't you wanna know what it's like?"

Carmen didn't respond right away as she gave his question some thought, even though a part of her was aware that she shouldn't even think about it period. She knew pondering over this was how it started with Big John and her dad, and she hoped it somehow wouldn't find its way to her like it had with John B. Except it did, so the only way to prevent it from affecting her family again was to forget about the whole thing before it could become a problem.

"No, I don't," she finally answered firmly. "But if you wanna go look for this treasure and make your dad proud then go for it."

"You can make your dad proud, too, Carmen."

She felt her heart ache at the statement. "He's been gone for almost four years. I doubt he even thinks about me anymore."

"You don't know that."

Carmen chuckled in response. "Trust me, I do." There was another pause as she downed the rest of her beer and threw it to the ground. "Anyway, I'm heading home for the night. Tell Alexis that I'm not gonna wait up for her ass."

"Are you sure you'll be okay walking home by yourself?"

"I'll be fine." She turned for a moment and started walking away before spinning back around to face John B. "Good luck with finding the treasure, John B. I hope you find what you're looking for."

He nodded with an expression of defeat on his face. "Thanks."

She then shot him a concerning look. "Just be careful. You might discover some things that were meant to stay buried."

"I will."

With that, Carmen gave him a short wave as she began to walk backwards. "Goodnight, John B."

"Goodnight, Carmen."

She moved her body around so that she was looking at the road again, focusing on the bitter aftertaste that lingered in her mouth. And just like the beer, thoughts of joining John B and the others on this treasure hunt only made her mind go sour, both of which were hard to get rid of.
