Chapter 13

♦Trigger Warning♦: Violence and mentions of suicide

I watched out the one window in this stupid room. It was raining, occasionally lightning would strike and then it would thunder and I would almost feel it shake the bed. I tried to guess the exact moment the lightning would strike to keep myself from falling into the endless pit of boredom.

Leo hasn't come back yet and part of me wonders if he just had decided to leave. At first it would sound like a good thing but not when I was right in the middle of a town that looked like murder was an everyday thing.

Sometimes I would hear footsteps coming towards the room but they would always pass. I looked out the window again making my guess when the lightning would strike. Now! Just as I thought that the sky flashed and I smiled to myself. That was the first time I had actually guessed right.

I was trying to keep my mind off Beth, she had wanted me to live even when I hadn't even been that nice to her. Her kind eyes had always made me think of my sister and I hated it. Why did she have to die because of me? Why did Leo have to save me and not her?

A single tear slipped out of my eye as my thoughts transitioned to my sister. She had always wanted me to live my best life even when she was living her worst. I wish that she would have told me that she was running away so I could have said an actual goodbye.

I had slowly started to accept that my sister was dead when they couldn't find any trace of her anywhere. She had some magic but my parents had told me that her magic was a curse not a blessing. I had tried to believe my parents but now I do realize how evil they actually were.

Now that my Mom is dead there is one less evil life in the world. Yes, she is still my Mom but she was never really kind to me or my sister. She had always favored my older brother who had inherited the "right" family magic.

My brother had never been nice to me or my sister either and he barely ever showed emotion like my father. He was the one that had dragged me and my sister to our rooms after all. The only remotely good memory I had of my brother was when he had been instructed to play with me when My mom, father, and sister had to go walk through the village just to make an appearance so that people could still know that we were even alive.

He had been smiling while we had played hide and seek but the second my parents got home the smile immediately dropped and his stone cold face returned.

My parents had never called him by his name, which was Axel. They always called him son or prince which is probably why I only really think of him as brother. I don't know why my parents did that, probably since they thought names made you emotionally attached to someone.

I heard footsteps coming towards our room but they eventually passed and I started to worry a little that Leo had actually left me. Had the kiss really been that bad? It had been my first real kiss besides the one boy that had ran up to me when I had been walking through the town with my family. He had been tortured and I wasn't even sure if he had survived. I was never allowed to watch anything violent but who was I to complain. The bad part was that Kendra and Axle were always forced to sit through it and it always made my sister gloomy for the next couple days.

I slowly laid back in the bed,and pulled the rough cover over my body. I could feel little gusts of air coming from the small cracks in the window making me shiver. The cover really didn't help at all.

I closed my eyes and immediately I fell asleep, my family's faces flashing through my mind.

***********************************************************************************************

The bed sank under someone else's wait and I popped one of my eyes open to see Leo sitting there staring at me. I jumped up surprised and ended up almost falling off the other side of the bed but somehow Leo caught my wrist before I did. He immediately let go after that.

"I'm sorry," He says softly and it surprises me because never in my life would I imagine Leo saying those words.

"Why are you sorry?" I ask as I sit up in the bed and stretch out my arms.

"You know why?" I automatically think that he means the kiss that we had? I don't want to push him though because he is finally being nice to me.

"Do you know why I kill people?" He asks me and I shake my head now fully awake. I can see him take a deep breath before starting to speak again,"When I was younger your family was walking through town. It had just been your mother, father, and brother. Me, my dad, mom, and brother had been watching and waving. Your dad looked over and I guess I saw my brother." He pauses and I can see this must be hard for him to say. I feel sick as I start imagining what my father must have done.

"They walked over to my brother and at this point I was hiding behind my parents because I was a scared pathetic child. My brother was sixteen at the time, your father took one look at him and then he snapped his neck" I stared at Leo in horror, his face was expressionless like it always was. "I had screamed and ran like many other people in the town. My Dad and Mom though were frozen in place and then your father snapped my mother's neck as your brother did the same to my Dads. I never knew why they did it, maybe to remind everyone that they had power over the town." Leo looked away from me and to the window as lightning struck and thunder came soon after.

"After that day a sickness started to spread. At least that's what I called it, some people thought it was a curse because it would burn the person that had it from the inside out. In the town you would hear screams from people as the sickness burned innocent people"

"There was no cure, and the symptoms of the sickness started out as every other normal cold. So when they started to get any sort of symptoms they would usually ask someone to kill them. I guess some people didn't want to kill themselves."I could almost see where this was going.

"A lot of people were desperate so they asked eleven year old me. I had refused at first but then I had started to see the pain people went through once the sickness took over their body. After that when someone asked me to kill them I always listened. Your family kept the sickness from everyone saying that I was killing people for no reason. I started realizing it was more than just some terrible sickness when only the lower class people were getting it. Soon I was able to tell if people had it when they didn't even know it themselves. There pupils would be dilated more than a normal persons, they would loose sense of direction, and they would radiate heat but there skin was always cold. When I told people that they had it they would always let me kill them except for the few that did not who I would hear screaming later as the flames overtook them." He took a deep breath and turned away from the window to look at me.

"What about my mother?" I ask wondering if she had caught the sickness and that's why Leo had killed her.

"Your mother was a horrible person Cleo, she hurt you and with her gone its one more step to a safer town." I expected him to stop talking but a dark look overtook his eyes as he looked away from me and continued.

"I had thrown my knife at her and it killed her immediately. Instead of everyone running and screaming like they did when my brother was killed everyone started to fight. That's how I got that blood splattered all over me."

"Gray had been there and he had started fighting along with everyone and I had just left. Gray had been lying about me getting people drunk before killing them. I think he had just been giving me an excuse to leave, because if I'm correct your father was probably in his house waiting to kill me and you. Me and Gray have been friends since childhood even when I still had my family and he was the one that took me in when I had nowhere else to go. I know Gray, and he wouldn't drug wine and invite people over just to spite me, I really think he was warning me. All I I can really hope is that your father didn't kill him and Avila." Leo looked back towards me after his long story as I tried to make sense of it all. So Leo wasn't a bad person, he actually kind of saved people.

"What about those twenty three people on your wall in the office? Why was my mother there?" There was a dangerous look in his eye as he looked at me and it sent chills down my spine.

"Those are the people I killed without the disease," I looked at him in horror, he was still a serial killer, just one with a little more reason to kill.

"Leo...I'm sorry about your family," He nods his head in appreciation and I see a single tear slip from his eye. I turn away from him quickly not wanting to catch myself feeling bad for him. I close my eyes tight trying to get rid of the images Leo has put into my head.

I feel him shift and get out of bed and I silently cry when he opens the bedroom door slamming it behind him. I let the tears silently fall as I fall asleep again wondering if I even wanted to wake up.
