Chapter 5

Ruby's POV

Oscar had only been attending Beacon High for a week, but he already fit in really well. It felt like he had been part of our friend group forever, and he seemed really comfortable when he was hanging out with us.

The teachers seemed to like him. He was smart and caught up with the rest of the class almost immediately. It was great to see him go from being behind to being one of the best students in the span of a few days.

During lunch, I sat down, working on a sketch I was doing. Oscar came and looked over my shoulder.

"I didn't know you were an artist," he commented, sitting down next to me.

"Yeah, I guess you can say that."

Yang, who was sitting at the other side of the table spoke up.

"She's the best artist in the entire school. Basically everyone at this table is great at something. Ruby's an artist, Blake writes every once and a while, Wiess is a singing queen, and Pyrrha is the smartest kid in our class."

"Don't forget that you are really good at martial arts babe," said Blake, who was sitting next to Yang.

"You all are so talented." Oscar said. "I'm not that skilled at anything. I'm pretty average."

"I'm sure you are great at something, you just haven't found it yet," Pyrrha said.

Oscar looks back down at my sketch. "What are you drawing, exactly?"

"Well, Blake and I are teaming up to write this graphic novel, just for fun. I'm working on different looks for the main character."

"That's really cool."

"Thanks! Blake's doing all the writing, I don't have the ability to write a good story arch, but I can draw it for her."

Oscar continue to look at the sketch I was doing and ate in silence.

I stopped and studied him for a moment. When he realized what I was doing, he asked "What's wrong?"

"Nothing's wrong. This is gonna sound weird, but would you be okay if I drew you sometime?"

Yang laughed and I think I heard Jaune snort his milk.

"Umm, I guess. Yeah, that sounds like fun." Oscar said.

The bell rang, signaling that lunch was over. I packed my art stuff away and headed to gym class.

"Hi Mr. Ebi!" I said, smiling and I waved to him. He waved back.

"How's your uncle?" He asked.

"Maybe you should talk to him to find out!" I teased. It was strange to be the one who knew that the two grown men were super into each other, but both were too afraid to say anything.

He laughed and dropped the subject.

Gym class was good, and the rest of the day passed by in a blur. Finally, school let out and I went to Oscar's locker to wait for him.

When he got there, I waved and he pulled out a bag of cookies for me from his locker. I was so grateful that he had agreed to store them for me, since Wiess hated when I used her locker as a snack shack.

"Hey, maybe do you wanna go to the park and I can draw you?" I asked. "Sorry, that sounds so weird."

"No, that sounds fun." He smiled and closed his locker.

I texted Yang and Dad to let them know where I'd be, since they are both super protective of me, then the two of us headed out to the park.

When we got there, it was practically deserted, minus a few kids. I went and sat on a swing and Oscar sat on the one next to me. He gently swung there, barely moving, as he looked up at the sky.

I pulled out my sketch pad and my favorite pencil, studying Oscar's face for a moment. Then I started drawing.

"Hey Oscar, maybe you should talk or something while I draw, so that you aren't just sitting there."

"Don't you need me to be still or something?" He asked.

"Most of the time, yes. But today I feel inspired, I think I can get most of it. Plus, if I need you to stand still for a moment, I'll tell you."

"What do you want me to talk about?" He asked awkwardly.

I thought for a moment. "Tell me about the farm. What was it like there?"

Oscar began talking, telling me every little detail about growing up on his family's farm. It sounded so interesting, there were a few moments I was distracted from my drawing because I was imagining everything that Oscar was describing.

Finally, I finished the sketch.

"Let me see!" Oscar said.

"Wait, let me compare it to you." I said. He stood still while I held the art up to his face. They were almost exactly the same. Sure, I messed up a tiny bit on his nose, but other than that, I was really proud of it.

Finally, I showed him.

"Wow, this is super amazing Ruby!" He gawked at it.

"Wanna have it?" I asked him, preparing to rip it out of my sketchbook.

"No, I think you should keep it." He said. "I mean, you did draw it, and it's so good. If I drew something as good as that, I would never give it away."

"Thanks!" I said, putting the sketchbook back into my bag. I checked my phone. There were texts from both Dad and Yang telling me to head home soon.

"I have to go," I said sadly. "Sorry."

"Don't be," He said. "Today was fun."

"Thank Oscar!" I practically tackled him in a hug. He stood there for a moment, surprised, but then gently hugged me back.

I broke away from the hug and started to jog back home. I waved goodbye right before I turned the corner. I couldn't stop smiling all the way home.

I got home and headed to my bedroom to put away my school stuff. On every wall, my drawing hung up, varying from people to animals to landscapes. I pulled out my sketchbook and carefully tore the sketch of Oscar out and found a place to hang it up on my wall. I stood there and smiled at it, proud of myself.

As we ate dinner, I was still super happy from hanging out with Oscar. I think my dad noticed because he kept teasing me and asking what amazing boy I had fallen for. I laughed, knowing it was a joke. But inside, I wondered if I was actually starting to develop a crush on him. I had only known him for a short time, but it felt like we had known each other all our lives. It was strange and I didn't know what to make of my emotions. But I knew that hanging out with Oscar did make me happy.

A/N: Some of you guys might have noticed that I accidentally published this chapter yesterday and then deleted it. Sorry about that. I went to press the save button and accidentally pressed the publish button. I wasn't even done writing the chapter, so I hurried to unpublish it. Here is the finished version.

Also, thank you for reading my stuff and being interested in my ideas. When I asked what story I should focus on for a while, Rosegarden was a popular one, and it was one I was thinking about picking back up, so everything worked out! I will definitely be focusing a lot more energy on this story, so be prepared for more of this adorable couple (not a couple yet).

Thank you again and I hope you enjoyed it! If you did, please vote and/or comment!
