Pierced
Author: tnvc525
Title: Pierced
Genre: Teen Fiction
Mature: Some swearing. Talk of sex. Not mature by my standards.
Cover and Title: 2.5/5
The cover was really mediocre. It wasn't ugly, but it was so plain there wasn't anything to capture attention.
The title was interesting, but it doesn't particularly fit. It seems like it would fit more with a fantasy or paranormal book. Something darker than this harmless teen Fiction.
Blurb: 1/5
There hardly even was a blurb. Next to nothing was written. The basic character description given only really says that this is your cliche bad boy story that will probably indorse borderline abusive relationships.
First Impressions: 3/5
I enjoyed Rosalie's initial sarcasm. One line in particular, I really did love. The one about death by calculus made me laugh. I think you accurately portrayed a high schoolers point of view.
Characters: 1.75/5
Most of the characters were extremely cliche. The cliche isn't necessarily a bad thing- they're cliches for a reason.
But this book was front loaded with them.
The mysterious bad boy.
The witty, excellent student everyone loves, except for
The super popular girl who for some reason loathe the MC, and is somehow popular even though she's a bitch and the school slut.
So many characters were introduced that served little to no purpose, I can't remember their names, and it's a wonder the author didn't too. They came in, caused a few jokes, and pretty much disappeared.
Rosalie was supposed to be the perfect, super nice, super hot girl- which is a good sign of a Mary Sue. NO ONE IS EVEN CLOSE TO THAT PERFECT. People need to relate to the main character, and when that character has no flaws, no one can relate.
But despite the fact that she was "so kind" she didn't really seem to have many kind words to say. She seemed really bitchy, and I found it very hard to like her personality. But she was amusing. In real life I'd like to slap some sense into her. Her attitude was funny, but she needs to stop being so self righteous.
Honestly, the only character I truly sympathized with was Andrew.
Grammar: 4/5
Good grammar. There really wasn't any lines I found particularly beautiful, but that works fine with the high school setting.
Word of advice, for dialogue write out numbers as words instead of numerals. It makes the text look more professional.
Plot: 2/5
While it was entertaining, there wasn't much original to grade. I grade on creativity and uniqueness of plot, and the amount of cliche makes it near impossible to do that.
Overall: 2.375/5 or 14.25/30
First off, I need to make something quite clear. I enjoyed this read. I found it was quite entertaining. It wasn't sophisticated, or particularly original. That's what's reflected in the review, not its entertainment value.
My highest recommendation is that you need to own your cliches. Make it clear that your book is full of them. That way, people will know what they're getting into.
Also, don't portray your characters as nicer than they are. For example, Rosalie might be kind to people's face, but externally, she's kind of mean. There's nothing wrong with that. I love reading about not so nice people. They are far more interesting at times. But make sure you embrace the mean streak and don't try to cover it up.
Anyone interested in an easy, cliche novel don't hesitate to check this out.
