Chapter Four
Steve's POV
None of us saw Natasha for the rest of the day. She was locked up in her room and refused to open the door for anyone. Clint and I had tried numerous times and each time we received the silent treatment. I had tried taking my mind off of what had happenned earlier by exercising but no amount of physical exertion could override my brain. After that I had done little tasks to keep me occupied such as, helping Thor polish his hammer, set up targets for Clint, give Tony a shoulder rub, and even making Scarlett lunch when she had asked for it. Performing these small rituals helped but here I was alone in my room laying on my bed with nothing to do. It was hours before sleep decided to claim me and even then it was almost pointless. I tossed and turned all night never really finding a comfortable position.
When I woke up the next morning to the faint sound my alarm I readied myself for the day. Once dressed and presentable I made my way to the kitchen where I found the others. All of them, even me, seemed tired, sluggish, and worried. Sitting down to a breakfast that Scar had taken the liberty of making I chewed mechanically, the taste not registering. As the minutes ticked on and there was only the sound of a few forks or knives closing around Tony, who I hadn't noticed was missing, strode into the room his face alight with excitement.
"Oh no, he's got that evil genius look." Scarlett warned. Tony having heard this waved her comment away.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I have an announcement. Having talked to Fury we have been given the day off. So, realizing we needed a bit of a pick me up, I have a surprise." Clint groaned and Thor looked worried.
"Your surprises are strange. They often do not excite us." Thor said speaking hesitantly. Tony rolled his eyes in exasperation.
"Believe me Goldy Locks you will like this. So if you care to follow me we will proceed in today's events." Watching him leave I debated on whether to follow him or not. I wasn't sure if this was going to end badly and if I did follow I would only be encouraging bad behavior. Scarlett shrugged and stood being the first to take Tony up on his offer. Clint followed then Thor. Sighing I also made my way to the living room. Tony stood in front of everyone almost like a commander giving orders.
"Today my friends we are going to play a game. Most of you may have no idea what this game is, I will explain later, but without further a due I present Just Dance!" He gestured towards the tv where a white rectangular box was plugged in with an assortment of hand held devices beside it. Clint who seemed to be the only one enthused by this ran over and grabbed the small stick like control.
"I get to pick first." He called.
"Fine. Anyways here's how it works." Tony took his time carefully explaining to us what we were supposed to do. What I learned from this was that we were playing a game on the rectangular box which was a Wii. We each got one of the stick controlers to hold. When the song started you were supposed to mimick the dance moves of the people on the tv screen. Who ever does the best at mimicking and gets the highest score wins.
Holding the stick in my hand I stood in front of the screen with Clint to my left ,Tony to my right, and Thor on the right of Tony. Apparently this was a practice round and according to Tony I probably needed it. There was a click from the speakers every time Clint passed over a song. He had gone through the list three times already before finally stopping on one picture that had become familiar by now. Y.M.C.A whatever that was.
"This is going to be good!" He said smiling. Once the song was selected it was time for us to pick our characters. Tony immediately called the guy with the sombrero while Clint called the person with the helmet. Tony picked for Thor saying that the guy in the British flag pants had good hair just like Thor's. That left me with the only person left. The one with the beard. Once we were ready Clint started the song and soon we were dancing. It took me a minute to figure out what to do while Clint appeared to have it memorized.
I must have been awful though based on Scarlett's laughter. Mimicking the moves as best as I could I found that it was actually kind of fun. Finally getting into the groove my score slowly climbed and I was ranked just after Clint with Tony right behind me. At one point though as we shifted our order someone tripped sending everyone falling to the ground but me. I looked over to see them red faced and laughing. I stopped completely forgetting about the game until Scarlett yelled at me to keep going. Suddenly a one man show I easily climbed up the score board while the others gathered themselves.
Once the song was over the final score was me, Clint, Tony, and Thor. Surprised that I actually won I passed my stick off to Scarlett who was still suffering from a fit of laughter. She got to her feet and took her spot next to Clint and Tony. This time they did a song by the band One Direction. As the song started I watched anticipating to see what it was that I may have looked like. The song slowly progressed and it was easy to see that Scarlett was the best by far. Clint was so absorbed in what he was doing he didn't notice Tony stick his foot out. Stumbling he regained his footing and continued the song. Tony with a smirk on his face kept dancing while Thor was struggling. He seemed to have no rhythm whatsoever.
Song after song we danced to before it was time for a break. The others were tired and I was told that I needed to wait because it wasn't fair if I got extra practice. Not sure of what else to do I headed towards the kitchen, deciding that the others were probably thirsty.
Humming one of the tunes to myself I walked around the corner and through the open arch. At first I didn't notice her but when I stubbed my toe on Tony's chair, which he forgot to push in, I whipped my head up wincing. I caught her small form out of the corner of my eye. She sat by the window knees tucked up to her chest with a plate of food in her hands. She watched me a hint of amusement in her eyes but I could tell that there was something off about her. Acting as if it wasn't a big deal that she had emerged from her room I sauntered over to the fridge pulling out water bottles.
"Good morning." I spoke continuing my task.
"It's a lovely day isn't it?" She asked. Peeking over my shoulder I watched as she gazed out the window studying the streets below.
"I suppose, though I haven't been outside today." She nodded at my words and I closed the fridge. "We're playing Just Dance want to join? Its actually kind of fun and I'm surprisingly not bad."
"I noticed." She said with a smirk. Frowning it took me a while to realize what she meant.
"Wait you were watching. How come I didn't notice?" I asked stopping short of leaving.
"You forget what my specialties are." Her words had a hint of sarcasm but I picked up a sense that that wasn't what she meant. To match her tone of voice her smile slipped just a little though it was almost un-noticeable. Deciding to leave before her mask completely dissapeared I headed back to the living room. If there was one thing anyone knew about Natasha was that she hated to be emotional in front of people. When her facade did slip it was usually when she was alone.
"What took you so long?" Clint asked being the first to reach me and help carry the drinks.
"Nat's awake." I answered simply tilting my head towards the kitchen. Clint nodded not saying anything and I could tell he had the same idea as me ,to not make a big deal about her sudden appearance. Once everyone was refreshed the activities continued until we were bored with the game. Then Tony brought out another game called Super Smash Bros. Thor was a lot better at this one getting extremely excited every time he hit someone and it was hard not to get excited as well. Scarlett wasn't as good at this but she managed to hold her own. After a few rounds we split into teams. Me, Clint and Scarlett versus Tony and Thor.
"Wait this isn't fair." Tony complained. I shrugged not bothering to propose a solution to his problem.
"Stop whining." Interjected a voice from behind us. Snatching up a controler I held it back over my head. Natasha took it and sat next to Thor. There was a moment of stunned silence before Tony interrupted it.
"You guys are so dead now." He said giving a devilish smile. Taking a moment to compose a strategy we began.
"Wait! Steve, get Tony he's gonna kick me off the edge!" Clint cried clicking buttons furiously. Moving my character I used my strongest attack to fling Tony into the air. Sadly his character slowly floated back onto the platform and back to safety.
"You'll have to try harder than that Rogers." Tony taunted turning his attention to Scarlett who was locked in a duel with Thor. We went on like this for minutes challenging each other and teasing one another until Clint and Natasha were the only ones left despite our three lives. Nat had easily decimated our team without losing a single life. Clint easily had the disadvantage.
"This should be easy." Nat said studying the screen with intensity.
"Yeah easy for me to beat you." Clint said turning the tables and taking the advantage.
"No, easy for me to win." She said tossing Clint off the edge with a move I hadn't seen before.
"H-how did you do that?" Clint asked his mouth hanging open.
"It's not that hard, the game just follows a series of patterns." Natasha said shrugging meanwhile Tony stomped his feet on the ground like a little kid celebrating their victory.
"Rematch!" Scarlett called. Soon enough we were playing again and that was how we spent the rest of the day. Sarcastic comments and playfull banter everyone seeming to completely forget about yesterday's events, that is everyone but me. I couldn't help but feel this weight in the pit of my stomach. The way Clint had looked after Nat had said something about a room bothered me. In the back of my mind a small voice told me that over the next few months we weren't going to have very many days like this. Sitting on the couch like we were normal instead of being superheroes. Sharing laughs and having a good time. It was enough to make me feel somewhat sad though I pushed it away determined to make the best of this moment and to lock it away near my heart. To keep it safe and to call upon it for warmth and comfort. Looking at my friends I realized we were more than a team, we were a family, and no matter what I would keep it safe even if doing so meant I would draw my last breath.
