Chapter Five

Clint's POV

I was sound asleep when I heard it. Something I had grown awfully accsustomed to over the years but something I hadn't heard in a long time. Before I could move, my door was practically knocked down by Thor.

"I request your service please." Getting up I dressed as fast as I could in my suit. My fingers trembling at the sudden rush of adrenaline.Hurriedly I followed him out of the door and down the lengthy hall our steps quick. The noise was blaring through the speakers a painful loud buzzing that I did my best to block out. Tony had to make it extremely loud just for me since my hearing wasn't exactly great.  Running into the control room I saw Tony frantically typing away on a keyboard.

"What's the situation?" I asked looking over his shoulder.

"Someone managed to break into a secured computer line." He said angrily while frantically moving his fingers. "I haven't had a successful security breach like this in years."

"What about your defenses?" Thor asked standing with his arms crossed and the corners of his mouth turned down.

"I don't know how they did it. I have fire walls beyond anything most people have ever seen and serious coding. You would have to be a genius to get through, and by genius I mean you would have to be me." Just then Cap strode in with his suit on and shield in hand.

"Clint what's the situation?" Quickly filling him in I turned back to Tony.

"Damn it!" He yelled slamming a fist down on his desk. Again the door slid open and in walked Tasha, Fury, Maria, Scarlett, and other agents all of them dressed and ready. "They got in and now I can't get them out."

"How is that even possible?" Steve asked the only one who seemed to keep a level voice.

"That's the thing I don't know!" Tony called. Nat took her place at the computer next to Tony seeing as how she was the only other one of us here that knew anything about hacking and computers. Her fingers clicked the keys flicking furiously as her eyes darted across the screen her brain in overdrive.

"Tony I've got a trace." She piped up as other agents took up their spots and set to work as well. With monitors going and fingers tapping I waited in anxious silence. The last time anything like this had happened it was because of Ultron though I hoped this wasn't as extreme. I was hoping to go back to bed. Watching we all waited for anything to happen. Nat and Tony talked to each other in what sounded like gibberish.

"Got it!" Tony called in excitement dragging his mouse. "Wait what?"

Suddenly all of the computer screens went black and panicked voices filled the room. Some of the agents trying to figure out what had gone wrong.

"What just happened?" I asked. Tony was clicking and tapping but whatever he was trying to do it wasn't working. Every single monitor went dead.

"Tony can you reboot?" Fury called looking over Maria's shoulder as she too tried her best to get everything up and running.

"I can try but there are no guarantees." With that Tony stood taking off down the hall in the direction of his lab.

"What do we do?" I asked Fury gesturing to the rest of us.

"We go on full lock down. We have no idea what the threat is and I'm not taking any chances." After the destruction of SHIELD's first base and the tower we weren't risking anything. None of us wanted to start from scratch again. Wheeling around on my heel I went to a code panel on the wall which for some reason was working perfectly. Pressing in a few buttons a clicking sound signaled the beginning phase of the lock down. All of the entrances would be locked first, then surveillance would be turned on to keep an eye on the outside, though it wouldn't matter since we couldn't use the computers to check the cameras, then the windows would be covered.

As the thin metal plating coated the windows Tony re-emerged from the hall pushing a small cart full of gadgets. Taking a thumb drive he inserted it into the nearest computer and entered a numbered code. When nothing happened he tried again. Clearly frustrated he grabbed a tablet and fired it up. Talking to Jarvis and typing he tried to reboot the system again and when that didn't work he practically threw the device.

"Nothing. Whoever did this is experienced." He sighed running a hand over his face.

The room fell silent as everyone racked their brains for an answer to the problem. Who could possibly be doing this? Who even knew how?  You had to be a genius to do this kind of stuff let alone hack into Stark's tech. Eyes roaming around I studied each of the computers as if their appearance could tell me anything.

"There's got to be an answer to this." Scarlett muttered resting a finger on her chin.

"No shit Sherlock!" Tony retorted though Scarlett's comment hadn't been directed at him.

"Tony, don't snap at her we're all trying to help. Getting angry won't do any good." Steve said trying to cool the tension. "We get it ,you're stressed, just try and think this through."

With a glare Tony turned his attention back to his cart rummaging around. Just when things started to settle down after Captain's speech an alarmed call broke the quiet silence of thinking minds. Snapping to attention I set my gaze in the direction of the yell. There in the center of the room was one glowing computer monitor. Getting to my feet I walked slowly towards the white screen. Not a single image popped up.

"What the-" Tony started but was cut off by a panicked voice coming from the computer's sound system.

" zdravstvuyte?" Immediately everyone stopped. Not a single voice broke the silence. " zdravstvuyte?"

The voice sounded panicked and afraid. I couldn't make out what was being said. Whoever it was they were speaking in a language I didn't know. Turning back to Tony I gave him a questioning look. He shrugged confused just as much as I was. I scanned the room looking for help when my eyes landed on Natasha. She had perked up at the sound of the voice. She stood slowly getting to her feet despite the confused look on her face.

"Wait a sec. What language is that?" Tony asked having seen her behavior though I think we all knew the answer. Nat gave him no response as she hurried forward plopping down in the chair and pulling on the headset.

"zdravstvuyte ." She replied crisply into the mouth piece.

"What's she saying?" Fury asked.

"Hang on give me a second I think I can translate this." Tony said tapping his watch and making it come to life. He pressed a few buttons before telling everyone to be quiet. " Nothing like the good old Google Translate app. Red repeat what you said."

" zdravstvuyte." She replied again though Jarvis's voice sounded moments later with a hello.

"Can you hear me ?" Called the voice. Nat leaned forward resting her elbows on the desktop.

" I can hear you." She replied. Whoever was on the other end of the call made a sound of relief lowering their voice even further into a whisper.

"Please whoever you are you have to help me." They pleaded.

" Whatever you need." Natasha replied.

" You have to get me out of here! These people they are dangerous. They make us do things, terrible things."

"What do you mean? What things? Where are you?" Natasha asked looking over her shoulder at us with a hint of worry in her eyes.

"I-I don't know." The voice shook. They must be crying. "I don't know where I am, I don't know how I got here! These people, you have to help!"

"Okay, okay relax. Tell me what you can, tell me everything." With that the other person took a shaky breath.

"I don't know where I am, but I do know that wherever it is it's in the woods. They take us there sometimes, me and the other girls, sometimes a few boys. We train there. They make us do tasks. Painful ones, we're often hurt and sore days after, they don't give us much rest. They won't tell us why we do them. They say it will help us perform, but I don't want to. I don't want to perform anymore." The person, who we knew was now a girl, broke down into pitiful sobs. I felt my heart hurt a little at that. It reminded me of when my children cried.

"It's okay. Can you keep going? I want to help, I do and I will, but I need you to finish." Natasha said earnestly sounding a little frantic herself, almost as if she knew what was going to be said next but needed confirmation.

" They take one of us sometimes. When they think we are good enough or old enough. I don't know what happens. Sometimes no one comes out after, other times they do but they aren't the same." Natasha's muscles tightened and I rested a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

" Where do they take you?" She asked slightly breathless.

" The ones who come back don't talk much, but sometimes they say something. Something about the way the lights flashed, or how it wasn't supposed to hurt."

"What happens to the ones that come out?" Nat asked a burning curiosity to her tone.

"They go mad. They stick to themselves, they don't talk. Sometimes at night I can hear their screams. When it gets bad enough they- they kill them." A ripple of emotion passed through the room. Cap's jaw clenched, Scar's breathing grew shallow, Thor stood in silence, and Tony's fingers hovered over his keyboard. The shock was clear on everyone's faces.

"I'm scared." Sobbed the girl.

"No, no it'll be okay. We'll do our best to find you I promise. Just hang in there you'll be okay." Natasha replied her voice soft and concerned.

"No I won't!" The girl protested with saddened emphasis.

"Why not?" Nat asked gently.

"Because I'm next."
