Under the Stars
After Sam and Wanda go to figure some stuff on their own, Steve decides that he needs to find Natasha. It turns out to be easier than he expected and fluff ensures.
Steve hadn't stopped thinking about Natasha since the moment she had let him escape at the airport.
He'd hoped that she was okay and had tried to avoid contacting her to keep her out of danger but once Wanda and Sam has asked to take a week or two to figure things out, Steve knew he had to find her.
Sam was heading to his cousins house to try and get in contact with his parents and Wanda was going to Scotland to meet up with Vision. They'd all decided that they would meet back in Greenland in a week and a half and had gone their separate ways.
Steve had gone straight to a nearby Walmart and bought a new burner phone to see if he could get ahold of Clint. If anyone had an idea of where Natasha was, it was him.
Unfortunately, Clint hadn't heard from her since getting out of the raft. But he did have her burner phone's number and gave a coded version of it to Steve just in case someone was able to tune into their call.
Steve figured out her number and didn't waste a moment before calling her burner.
The phone rang a few times before there was a click on the other side of the line and he heard the voice he had been dreaming of for weeks.
"Hello, who is this?" She asked in Russian.
"It's Steve," He said, unsure how else to answer.
There was a pause, "Steve? How'd you get this number?"
"I contacted Clint. He told me if I needed to call you this was the number to use," Steve explained, suddenly realizing that he didn't have any reason to be looking for her aside from simply missing her.
"Is everything okay?" Natasha asked, sounding uncharacteristically worried.
"Yeah. Everything's fine. I just-" He paused, "I was worried about you and I miss you Nat. The other two broke off this morning to go tie up some loose ends."
There was another long pause that made Steve wonder if he should have even called her in the first place. Maybe this was overstepping his boundaries. If he wasn't careful he could lead Ross and his men right to her.
"Have you ever been to Pic du Midi?" Natasha asked.
"No," Steve said, feeling a slight sense of relief at having some sort of location to go off of.
He could practically hear Natasha's smile, "Oh it's incredible. I'm staying in this farm house in the mountains right now. It's right by Les Basses. You'd love it. There's a little village nearby too. It's got tons of shops and this gorgeous fountain in the center. I'm actually going there tonight for dinner, I'll send you pictures."
Steve smiled, picking up on what she was doing, "I'll have to check it out one day."
Natasha hummed in response, "I hope you do. I've got to go but I'll talk to you soon."
"Okay. Bye Nat."
"Goodbye Steve."
Steve hung up, a wide grin on his face and he instantly looked up the quickest way to get to Pic du Midi. It was about a seven hour trip overall and he hurried to the train station after buying a ticket so that he could be there in time to meet her there for dinner.
The train ride itself was about five and a half hours and once he arrived at the bottom of the mountain range, he would have to take a taxi to the top, where the village was.
By the time he got there, it was about 6 pm local time. Easily spotting the fountain Natasha had mentioned, Steve walked over to it and sat down on a nearby bench, his eyes scanning the crowd of people in a way that he hoped wouldn't be obvious.
He sat quietly for an hour or so before he saw Natasha approaching the fountain. Steve didn't waste a second before standing up and walking towards him.
"Hey," He said, coming up besides her.
She turned to him with a grin and smiled, "Hey. Sorry I'm a bit late."
Steve was about to reply when Natasha leaned up and pressed a kiss on his cheek, leaving him shocked. Natasha gave him a discreet wink as she pulled away and grabbed his hand, "The restaurant had to give up our table but I had some food delivered to the house."
"Sounds great," Steve said, following when she grabbed his hand and began to walk towards the road.
They were mostly quiet, knowing that they'd have time to talk later. Instead Steve just followed Natasha to her motorcycle, where he climbed on behind her despite the strange looks other people gave them.
"Hold tight," She told him with a smirk before pulling away from the village quickly.
It was about twenty minutes before they reached a small cabin that Steve assumed was where Natasha was staying.
"How'd you find this place?" Steve asked when they got off the bike.
Natasha shrugged, "I know someone who knows the owners. They got me in contact and I was able to book it for a month under a false identity. If anyone asks, my name is Natalie Grant. You can stay Steve, it's a pretty typical name for Americans."
Steve smiled, "Are you calling me typical?"
Natasha shook her head with a small smile as she opened the door and stepped inside, "The only thing typical about you is your name Steve."
"Is that a good thing?" Steve asked, following her.
Natasha shrugged, "Depends who you ask."
"I'm asking you."
She turned back to him with a barely noticeable smile, "It's a good thing."
Steve smiled and looked around the small cabin. It wasn't big, but it definitely had more than enough space for Natasha, and the city was gorgeous. The view from the cabin was incredible and Steve couldn't remember the last time he had been to a place where the sky had been that clear.
"You chose a nice place to lay low," He said.
Natasha nodded, "Yeah. It's better than most places I've lived."
"How long have you been here?"
"About a month. Once Tony figured out what happened at that airplane I didn't really want to stick around to ask for forgiveness. I made a pitstop in Brazil for a few weeks to meet with an old contact. They knew someone who rents this place out and wasn't getting much business so they sold it to me with very few questions asked."
Steve nodded, "Was Tony upset?"
Natasha nodded, "Yeah. Said something about me still being a double agent or something like that but then he warned me about Ross so I'm sure he'll get over it eventually."
Steve frowned, "He shouldn't have said that Nat. You were the only one trying to keep us together."
Natasha shrugged, "It's okay Steve. I got my shots in too. And regardless of whether I think I did the right thing or not, I still betrayed them."
"Do you?"
Natasha raised an eyebrow, grabbing a bottle of wine from the kitchen, "Do I what?"
"Think you did the right thing?" Steve asked, terrified of her answer.
Natasha nodded, "You were right about the Accords in the beginning. I shouldn't have signed them. Letting you go was the least I could have done after that mistake."
Steve frowned at her as she took a sip from the glass, "You probably saved Bucky's life Nat. It was more than enough. And you didn't owe it to me to not sign the Accords, you thought it was the only way to stay together. I get it."
She shook her head, walking past Steve and sitting on the couch, "You're too forgiving sometimes. We've been partners for years now and when I had to pick a side, I didn't side with you. If I regret anything, it's that."
Steve hated that he could tell she was blaming herself for what had happened, "Neither side was right Natasha. We all made choices and most of them were wrong. Stop blaming yourself."
She didn't reply, instead just staring out the large window in her cabin as the sun set.
"How are Sam and Wanda?" She asked a few minutes later.
Steve shrugged, "Okay. They both needed time to sort things out. I'm really not that great of a leader when it's not in the battlefield. We've had a few close calls with Ross lately."
Natasha nodded, "Sounds like you all could use some help."
Steve raised an eyebrow, "Are you offering?"
He'd been planning to ask her to help them anyways, but having her offer it made Steve feel slightly better about it,
Natasha nodded, "You don't have nearly enough contacts out there to help you stay away from Ross and I'd really hate to have to break you guys out of his prison. That sounds like a lot of work."
Steve smiled, "You would make it look easy."
Natasha grinned, "Obviously."
Steve laughed for a second and then sighed quietly, "I missed you Nat."
"I know," Natasha said quietly, "I missed you too."
She paused before looking over at Steve, all hints of a smile gone from her face, "I'm sorry I didn't contact you earlier."
Steve shrugged, "It's alright. I'm here now."
Natasha nodded, raising her eyebrow slightly, "Why did you come? If you needed my help you could have asked over the phone. Why come all the way here?"
"I wanted to see you. I have a week to kill and I can't think of a better way to spend it then with you."
Natasha smiled slightly, "I think that your standards are incredibly low."
Steve laughed, "I grew up with Bucky as a best friend, that's probably true."
Natasha smiled, "You hungry?"
Steve shrugged, "Sure. I guess they probably don't deliver pizza all the way out here."
"Nah, I tried once, it took hours. I've got peanut butter and bread though."
Steve laughed, "Why doesn't that surprise me?"
Natasha glared at him, "Do you want a sandwich or not?"
Steve grinned, "Please."
Natasha silently made them both a plain peanut butter sandwich and then grabbed two water bottles and walked towards Steve, "Follow me,"
Steve did so, walking behind her as Natasha walked outside of the small cabin and into what was essentally the backyard.
There was a pool, a hot tub, a large patio with a grill, and a small area on the edge of the small mountain filled with cushions and blankets.
Natasha headed straight for the cushioned area.
"What's this for?"
"Pic du Midi is known for astrology. Pretty much every property here has a deck like this for stargazing. Have you ever done it?"
Steve shook his head, taking the sandwich from her hand as she sat down on the cushion.
"I went undercover as a planetarium worker once. I had to sit through like three hundred shows about constellations and planets," Natasha said, finishing her sandwich and then laying back against the pillows and looking up at the sky.
Steve laughed, "The only constellation I know is the big dipper, and half the time I can't even find it."
Natasha pointed up at the stars, "See that bright one?"
Steve nodded and she continued, "That's the end of the handle on the big dipper."
Steve tilted his head slightly and smiled, "I see it!"
Natasha laughed and pointed at another set of stars, explaining the story behind it as well.
Steve smiled and looked over at her as she continued talking. He didn't often get to see her like this, with her guard down, just talking about something she found interesting. It reminded her how much he loved her and also reminded him that he she still didn't know that.
He pointed up at the sky, "That one looks like your hourglass. We should just call it the Black Widow constellation."
She rolled her eyes, "It does not look like my hourglass."
"Sure it does. You just have to tilt your head a little bit and use your imagination."
Natasha laughed and hit Steve's arm, "Shut up."
He laughed and flipped onto his side so he was completely facing Natasha, "Nat, can I tell you something?"
Tilting her head towards him, Natasha nodded, "You will anyways."
"I think I'm in love with you," He said quietly, still looking up at the stars, terrified to watch her reaction.
"You think? I was under the impression that you were head over heels for me," Natasha teased, sitting up and looking over at Steve.
Steve couldn't help but smile, "I was concerned that type of confession might scare you off."
Natasha smiled back, "Nah. Not from you. You're gonna have to do a lot more than that if you want to scare me off."
Steve laughed and sat up on his elbows, "So you're still coming back with me?"
Natasha rolled her eyes, "Shut up,"
She leaned down and kissed him, stopping Steve from saying anything else.
Slightly taken aback by it, Steve slipped off his elbows and fell onto his back.
Natasha laughed, "You alright there?"
Steve grinned, "Better than ever."
Natasha stood up and held her hand out to Steve, "If you come with me I can promise it'll get better."
Steve grabbed her hand and followed behind eagerly as Natasha dragged him back into the cabin.
She stopped briefly and pulled Steve back in for a short kiss, "By the way, I love you too."
With that, she pulled him into the cabin and by the end of the night they were both very glad that there was nobody around for miles.
Hey guys. I'm sorry it's been forever, I got a new job and then had some serious writers block. I should have a new chapter out soon and it will be extremely long.
I hope you all enjoyed this one and if you did please comment and vote!
