You are My Sunshine

Requested by DepressedTrashCan__...an undercover mission between Steve and Natasha goes south.

"You do anything fun yesterday?" Natasha asked Steve, prepping herself for landing.

Steve gave a dry chuckle. "Well, all the guys from my barber shop quartet are dead, so not really."

Natasha smirked. "I know you're joking but do you actually sing?"

Steve shrugged. "Not well."

A grin spread across Natasha's face. "But you do?"

Steve sighed. "I did. I was in my highschool choir. I don't anymore."

"When we get back from this mission you have to sing for me." She said grinning.

Steve furrowed his eyebrows. "Why would I do that."

Natasha smirked. "Because I'm asking nicely."

Steve rolled his eyes and helped Natasha into her parachute.

"You ready?" He asked.

Natasha nodded and walked towards the open door. "Yup, let's go Captain." She said, turning around and jumping out of the jet.

Steve followed her, without a parachute. He landed a few moments before she did and pulled her towards him where they crouched behind a rock.

Their mission was pretty simple on paper.

Hydra operatives had taken over a small shield base, also taking in several hostages.

It was small, so Natasha and Steve were doing the mission themselves with backup a few miles away.

They discussed their plan before approaching the base quietly.

Steve boosted Natasha onto the roof where she quickly took out all of the guards stationed outside and on the roof.

After the roof was clear, Steve climbed up as well and they found a vent to enter through.

"Find the hostages, I'll work on clearing a path out." Natasha told Steve.

Steve nodded and they dropped down into the building. Side by side they faught through the initial Hydra soldiers.

Once they were in, Steve ran off to find the hostages and get them out.

It didn't take him too long, but he had to fight several soldiers in order to get them safe.

Once the hostages were unbound and ready to run, Steve put his hand to the intercom.

"Nat, do you have a clear path yet?"

"Almost, start heading towards the southeast entrance. It's almost clear." She said, nearly out of breath.

Steve led the hostages towards where Natasha would be. They were almost there when Steve saw Natasha still fighting several of the men.

Using his shield, he helped her knock out a few more men and then ushered the hostages out quickly, calling for backup to come pick them up.

Working together with Natasha, they defended the hostages and took out as many people as they could.

Once shield picked up the hostages, they could just blow up the base and Natasha and Steve could get out of there.

The jet arrived a few minutes later and all the hostages were loaded on.

"Cap! You two get out of there. We're blowing it up in one minute." One of the shield agents told Steve through his intercom.

Steve yelled for Natasha to go and they ran out of the building, back towards the jet picking them up.

It happened in slow motion.

Steve heard a gunshot, and then silence.

Suddenly Natasha wasn't running beside him.

He whipped around to see her lying on the ground with blood seeping out of her chest.

Steve looked up to see one of the "hostages" holding a gun. He quickly used Natasha's to shoot them and then lifted Natasha up.

He knew they were running out of time.

He cradled Natasha's body to his own and fought back tears as he could feel Natasha's breath slow down.

Once they were a safe distance from the base, he set her down and tried to apply pressure to the wound.

"Nat? Natasha say something." He begged.

Natasha coughed and grabbed Steve's hand, squeezing it tightly.

"I need immediate extraction from the mission and a doctor. Romanoff is shot and losing blood. Send help." Steve said, his voice cracking.

Natasha's eyes closed slightly as she took deep breaths through the pain.

"Nat, you're going to be fine, just stay with me. Talk to me Nat." Steve begged.

"Steve, can you sing for me?" She asked quietly.

Steve hesitated but ultimately could never deny her wishes.

"The other night dear. As I lay sleeping. I dreamt I held you, in my arms. Now you're woke dear, I was mistaken. So I hung my head and I cried." Steve started, gently singing.

Natasha sighed softly, enjoying his peaceful voice. She held his hand in both of hers and he continued.

"You are my sunshine. My only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are grey. You'll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away." His voice cracked as Natasha's grip on his hand softened.

"I'll always love you, I'll make you happy. And nothing else could, come between. But if you leave me, to love another. You'll have shattered all my dreams." He sang, finishing with tears welling up in his eyes.

Natasha's pulse was weak and her breaths were short.

Steve shook his head and pulled her into his arms again. "Nat please stay with me. I love you. Natasha don't leave me." He begged.

Natasha's eyes were hardly open but she managed to place a hand on Steve's cheek gently.

"I love you too." She said quietly before closing her eyes again.

The doctors arrived on a medical jet and Steve ran to them with Natasha in his arms.

"Save her. Please." He begged them, refusing to leave her side.

They finally pushed him away and started surgery on Natasha to stop the bleeding and get the bullet out.

Hours later, they promised Steve she would be okay.

He sat silently besides her, gently holding her hand in his own. Just waiting for her to wake up.

He was exhausted, but he didn't want Natasha to wake up without him there.

He was staring at the ground in front of him when he heard Natasha's voice besides him.

"So you are a hero, you're good looking, and you can sing? I don't know how you haven't been snatched up by a girl yet Rogers." She teased quietly.

Steve laughed, overwhelmed with joy at her being all right.

Natasha squeezed Steve's hand and smiled at him. "What? Did you think a bullet would be enough to kill me?" She joked.

Steve shook his head. "You had me worried there for a second."

"I know."

Steve looked down and sighed. "I meant everything I said though."

Natasha looked up to meet Steve's gaze. "I did too Steve. I do love you."

Steve couldn't help but smile. "I love you too."

Natasha sat up slowly and kissed Steve softly.

"You're my sunshine too Steve." She mumbled.

So this was kind of sad, but ended well. Like I said, this was a request from DepressedTrashCan__. The request was for a mission to go badly and someone to sing you are my sunshine to the one injured.

Hopefully this is what you had in mind and I hope y'all enjoyed it!
