Waiting While You're Gone
Dialogue prompt requested by ImLilMissComplicated. Natasha doesn't want Steve to go on a short mission.
"C'mon Nat...it's only a few hours," Steve said with a small laugh as he slipped on his suit.
Natasha rolled her eyes, walking up to Steve and running her fingers up his chest, "Yeah well, think about what else we could be doing for a few hours if you stayed home instead."
Steve shook his head, using every ounce of self-control he had to gently peel her hands from his chest, "People could die Natasha. You know I have to go. It's my job."
Natasha frowned, "Then let me come."
Sighing, Steve placed his hands on Natasha's hips, "Nat, you know you can't."
She glared at him and pushed his hands off her hips, "Just because I'm pregnant doesn't mean I'm fragile. You could all use my help."
"Natasha don't be like that. You know that if I had it my way, you'd be coming. You're the best agent we have and I work better with you then I do with anyone. Not to mention, you've got more experience then any other person at Shield...but it isn't about you and I anymore. If one stray bullet hits your stomach we'd lose the baby. We can't risk that."
Natasha sighed, "I know. I just hate this."
Steve pulled her towards him and pressed a light kiss to her forehead, "I know. How about after this mission I ask for a few days off? We can go out to eat, take a walk through the park-"
"-Stay here and have sex?" Natasha interrupted, smirking as Steve's face reddened.
He tried to fight back his blush as he managed a nod, "Whatever you want."
Natasha grinned, "Fine. But what am I supposed to do while you're gone?"
Steve shrugged, "I don't know...what do you normally do when I'm gone on a mission?"
Natasha smirked again, "Wait for you to get back."
They both laughed quietly and Steve bent down to press a kiss to Natasha's lips, his hands laying on the small baby bump that was just beginning to show, "You could try a movie?"
She sighed and shrugged her shoulders, "I guess that'll have to do."
They kissed again and Steve grabbed his shield from where it was leaning against the wall and strapped it to his back, "I'll be back in a few hours okay."
Natasha nodded, pecking his cheek lightly, "Be careful. I expect you home before dawn."
Steve tossed her another goofy grin before walking down the hallway. Natasha sighed before walking over to their couch and plopping down onto it.
Steve's mission was only supposed to last a few hours...surely she could handle waiting one night to see him again.
She would try to sleep, but she knew it was pointless.
Without Steve besides her, she'd either have terrible nightmares or the baby would kick ruthlessly at her ribs as though they could tell Steve was absent.
Both scenarios were less then pleasant so she would rather try and stay up and past the time.
Natasha looked at the movie selection on their TV and frowned. In all honesty, Natasha didn't enjoy movies much without the pairing of getting to watch Steve's face as he reacted everything.
So after scrolling through what felt like a hundred movies that she had no interest in watching, Natasha got up to see if maybe there was something she could cook.
Steve would be back around breakfast time and he always cooked for her. She was more then happy to return the favor.
Natasha found a few ingredients and looked up a recipe to make traditional crepes, knowing that Steve loved them.
Her first attempt was less then successful. She had managed to make what might have passed as crispy pancake batter...but much much worse.
Her second attempt, while much better then the first, was also inedible.
"Why can't I make these damn things?" She whispered, starting her third attempt.
Two hours passed before Natasha finally succeeded. The crepes didn't look amazing, but she had tried them and they were as good as she expected to get them.
Now, she just had to wait for Steve to return.
She sat down on their couch again and read as she waited for Steve to come home.
About two hours later, the door opened and she locked eyes with Steve, who looked like he had just been through hell and back.
Natasha quickly stood up and walked to Steve, placing her hand on his cheek and examining him closely, "Steve? You alright?"
He nodded but it was hardly convincing, "I'm okay."
Natasha led him to the couch and sat down besides him, "What happened?"
Steve shook his head and his eyes watered with a few tears as Natasha took his hand in hers, "They sent us to this huge mansion in the middle of nowhere. I assumed that a major Hydra leader lived there. He was having a meeting with other members and we were instructed to take them all out. They didn't bother telling us that the rest of his family was in the house too."
Natasha frowned as Steve continued.
"We took care of all the men within a half hour. They were unprepared and didn't have many weapons on them. But then the Strike team went searching for more people in the rest of the house and before I could do anything, they killed his wife and two older boys that were his sons. I had just gotten into the room when a little girl came out of the closet, she couldn't have been older then ten."
Steve shook his head, his eyebrows furrowing, "She knew who I was. She'd barely said 'Captain America' before Rumlow burst in the room and shot her too."
Natasha frowned, "He killed a kid?"
Steve nodded, "Said she had seen too much."
Pulling Steve into her embrace, Natasha sighed, "Don't blame yourself Steve. You couldn't have changed the outcome."
He shook his head, "I know. It just made me worry more about you and our baby...Nat, what if I can't protect you two? We have so many enemies. What if one of them did what we did to that family today? You're my entire world. I can't lose you."
"Hey," Natasha whispered, grabbing Steve's chin and pulling it so that she was looking at him, "You don't have to worry about me. I can protect myself. And as for our little parasite, they'll have the world's strongest team in the world looking out for them...not to mention Captain America and Black Widow as their parents. We're both going to be fine."
Steve nodded, placing his hands on her baby bump as he let out a deep sigh.
"You've really gotta stop calling our baby a parasite..." He whispered.
Natasha laughed and kissed Steve gently, "Do you prefer freeloader?"
Steve chuckled and shook his head, "How about just baby?"
Natasha shrugged, "I like freeloader."
"Whatever you say," Steve said with another small laugh, kissing her again.
She grinned and leaned against his forehead, "I made breakfast."
Steve smiled, "Yeah?"
She nodded and he followed her to the kitchen, accepting it with gratitude before sitting down with her to eat, praising the dish the entire time they both ate.
"I love you Nat," He whispered once they were both finished and had settled down into bed to get some sleep.
Natasha smiled, "I love you too. Me and Freeloader both do."
Steve chuckled and closed his eyes, "Goodnight."
"Night," Natasha whispered, relishing in how loved she felt because of Steve. She sighed and closed her eyes.
She'd spend her whole lifetime waiting if it meant she got more moments like this with Steve Rogers.
