Turn Back
Requested by hannah_ttnhi, Natasha gets hurt by black panther after letting Steve and Bucky escape.
Natasha had told Tony from the beginning.
She had told him that she wasn't going to fight Steve.
Clint, Wanda, Sam...she could fight them, but not Steve.
She had already betrayed him once by choosing Tony's side, that was the extent of pain she wished to cause him.
Her plan to avoid conflict with Steve was going fine until they were running at the jet she was guarding.
She had seen T'challa running close behind them, catching up quickly.
She could have done nothing and just let T'challa catch them.
Everything would be fine and she wouldn't be betraying anyone.
But when Steve locked eyes with her and she saw the fear and hurt in his eyes as she raised her widow bite to stall them, her loyalty to him took over.
"You're not gonna stop..." She said sighing.
Steve tilted his head, "You know I can't."
"I'm gonna regret this..." Natasha said, moving her aim at T'challa and shooting him.
Steve looked at her in shock and Natasha nodded towards the jet, "Go."
Steve gave her a grateful look and ran towards the jet with Bucky as Natasha kept T'challa from approaching them.
Bucky ran into the jet and Steve paused, looking back at Natasha one last time.
She had now resorted to physical combat and was trying to fight off T'challa herself.
"Steve go!" She yelled.
Steve sighed and ran into the jet.
He started it up quickly and started the engines.
T'challa kicked Natasha out of the way and leapt at the jet, barely missing it.
Natasha flew backwards and hit the wall hard...hard enough to make her vision blurry and her head pound more then it had already been.
She laid her head back on the wall and blinked, her head was spinning and the room seemed to be turning faster then she could process.
Steve radioed Clint from the jet, hoping he hadn't been captured yet, "Clint! Natasha, she helped us escape. She was fighting T'challa, I need you to make sure she's okay."
"I'm on it!" Clint yelled, running to the air hanger.
Clint got inside and cursed when he saw Natasha laying limp against the wall.
"Cap, she's out cold. She's got a nasty cut on her head and probably has a concussion," Clint said through the radio.
Steve's brows furrowed and he pulled back on the jet thrusters.
"Buck, I have to go get her. She's hurt because of me. Take the controls and keep the jet in the air until I radio you, then land it on the other side of the airport... we'll meet you there." Steve said, sliding on a parachute.
"You sure about this Steve?" Bucky asked, taking the controls.
"Yes. I have to help her."
Bucky nodded and opened the hatch, watching as Steve jumped out.
"Clint, I'm coming to get her. Can you distract T'challa?" Steve asked as he drifted down to the building.
"Yeah, be fast though. I'm just gonna start running and hope he follows." Clint said.
Steve waited until he was a little closer to the ground and cut the parachute, landing on the roof of the hanger.
He looked over and saw Clint running, firing arrows at T'challa over his shoulder.
Steve dropped into the hanger and ran to Natasha.
"Nat...Natasha, can you hear me?" Steve asked, bending besides her.
Natasha groaned and opened her eyes, "Yeah." She mumbled, barely opening her eyes, "You're supposed to be on a jet escaping."
Steve shrugged, "You thought I was gonna leave you here in this state?"
Natasha didn't respond, she just looped her arms around Steve's neck when he picked her up and closed her eyes, hoping that the throbbing in her head would go away soon.
"Buck, we are coming to you. Once we are nearby, start the engine. We aren't gonna have much time," Steve said, looking behind him at T'challa, who was gaining on them.
"Landing now." Bucky replied.
Steve quickly turned a corner and sprinted towards the other side of the airport. Hoping that he was fast enough to outrun T'challa.
"Natasha how are you doing?" Steve asked, looking down at her and frowning at the cut across her head that was still bleeding.
Natasha grimaced, "Well right now I'm seeing three of you, so not great."
Steve frowned, "Hang in there Nat."
Natasha closed her eyes again and held onto Steve tighter.
Steve finally saw the jet and yelled to Bucky through his com system, "Lift off now! I can make the jump."
Bucky followed his orders and Steve leapt onto a nearly crate, using it as leverage to jump on the jets landing gear. He held Natasha tightly with one hand and used the other to hoist them both into the interior safely.
Steve leaned Natasha against the wall after closing the hatch and walked up to Bucky in the front.
"I've gotta tend to her wounds. Full speed ahead alright?"
Bucky nodded and Steve retreated back to where Natasha was sitting.
He found a first aid kit at the back of the jet and sat across from her. Pulling out the alcohol to disinfect the cut on her head.
"This is gonna sting," Steve warned, dabbing some of the liquid onto her injury.
Natasha winced and bit down on her lip.
"Damn." She mumbled.
Steve finished cleaning the injury and rubbed his finger gently along the side of her face, "How's your head feel?"
Natasha opened her eyes and shrugged, "It's been better, but I'll survive."
Steve walked away for a second and returned with a bottle of pain killers.
"Maybe these will help," He said, offering them to her.
Natasha nodded and swallowed a few, "Thank you."
Steve nodded, looking into Natasha's eyes and scanning them.
Natasha stared back for a few moments and couldn't help but feel her heart start to beat quicker.
"You think you have a concession?" Steve finally asked.
Natasha shrugged, "I don't know, you were the one staring in my eyes for two minutes. Are my pupils dilated?"
Steve blushed and tilted his head, trying to determine if they were dilated.
"I don't think they are." He finally said.
Natasha nodded, "Then I'm probably fine. Once I get some rest I'll be good as new."
Steve smiled, "Good...you had me nervous for a minute there."
Natasha closed her eyes again, "Really Rogers? You've known me for how long and you thought a head wound was gonna be the thing to take me down?"
"Point taken..."
Natasha sighed, "Where are we headed?"
Steve looked up at the cockpit, "To find whoever set off that bomb at the signing. Maybe if we find the real killer they won't be after Bucky."
"Well if I'm going to help you do this, I'm gonna need some rest before we get there...I don't suppose there's a pillow around here," Natasha said, frowning.
Steve shook his head, "No... But you can use my shoulder if you want. It's probably softer then the ground."
"Do you not need to help Barnes with navigation?" Natasha asked, although her head was already resting on Steve's shoulder.
Steve shook his head, "We won't even be close until late tonight. He'll be okay."
Natasha nodded and closed her eyes again, finally letting sleep take over and hoping it would ease her headache.
Steve sighed and kissed the top of her forehead carefully. Turning back was stupid and risky on his part but Steve couldn't leave Natasha behind. Not without making sure she would be alright.
Plus, having her on his side was a huge advantage. She was skilled in everything.
Not to mention, Steve felt more at peace when he was with Natasha then he did anywhere else.
So despite that he was sitting on the cold metal ground, having Natasha besides him, using his shoulder as a pillow, Steve felt more at home then ever.
Now, they just had to find a mass murderer. Maybe then, he would finally have the time to tell Natasha how he felt.
