Set Up
Tony notices that Steve and Natasha clearly have feelings for each other but won't act on them, so he sets them up with each other without their knowledge. Requested by DepressedTrashCan__
Tony had been watching for months. The flirting, the yearning gazes, and the obvious attraction between his co-avengers were becoming too much for him to stand by and watch.
It was insanity. Two people who were so in love with one another but didn't act on it.
After so long, Tony was sick of waiting. He knew that Steve and Natasha would need a little push if they're relationship was ever going to get started.
So he made a plan. He would recruit a few people and make sure that Steve and Natasha were placed in a romantic situation with no choice but to act on their feelings.
His first recruit was Peter. The kid would do anything Tony told him without a second thought.
Then he asked Sam for help. He was close friends with both of them and desperately wanted them to get together.
His third recruit was Wanda. She was female and had a little more romantic ideas then the men. Not to mention how invested she was in Natasha's relationship with Steve.
With a group of people ready to help, he figured out a way to get them together.
Eventually he figured out a way that seemed fool proof.
First he planned a party. It was small for him and only had a few people that weren't apart of the avengers.
Natasha and Steve had both just returned from a mission on the night of the party and we're exhausted both physically and mentally.
Tony practically had to beg them to get them to agree to come.
Once they were at the party. He sent in reinforcements.
Sam walked up to Steve and pointed to Natasha, who Steve was already staring at.
"How was your mission? She doesn't look too beat up." He asked.
Steve shrugged. "We both got a few minor injuries. Nat took a few stab wounds. I got hit by a bullet. Nothing major."
"Right. Just a bullet hole and stab wounds. No big deal. I get those all the time." Sam replied sarcastically.
Steve smiled. "I'm sure."
"What's going on between you two anyways?"
Steve looked confused. "What do you mean? Nat is just a friend. You know that."
"Please. You look at her like she's the last person on Earth and you're telling me there's nothing going on there? No feelings?" He asked.
This was the first part of Tony's plan. To get them both thinking about the relationship between them. To bring whatever feelings they had for each other to the surface.
Steve stuttered. "I don't have time for a relationship."
"Yeah, because you and Nat don't already spend every day together. Don't give me that bullshit."
Steve sighed. "So what if I do like her? She's not gonna feel the same. There's no point in going for it if I'm just going to get rejected."
Sam shrugged. "I wouldn't be so sure. I think your underselling yourself. Look, Nat is intimidating. But I really think she might feel the same. I've seen you two together. Maybe think about telling her how you feel." He suggested before setting down his drink and walking away. Leaving Steve to think about what Sam told him.
Meanwhile Wanda was approaching Natasha, who was sitting alone and drinking a beer.
"What are you doing all alone?" Wanda asked.
"Drinking." Natasha deadpanned.
"Did you're mission go badly?" Wanda asked.
Natasha shook her head and took another sip. "No it was good."
"Then why are you upset.?" Wanda asked again. Pushing Natasha to tell her.
Natasha sighed. "Who said I was upset?"
Wanda shrugged. "I can feel it."
Natasha shrugged and leaned back on the couch, glancing over at Steve talking to Sam.
"Is it Captain Rogers?" Wanda asked.
Natasha's cheeks darkened slightly and she pretended to be surprised. "What? Why would Steve be the reason I'm upset?"
"You love him don't you. I've seen the way you two look at each other. You should tell him." Wanda said.
Natasha sighed again. "It's not that simple."
"Why not?"
Natasha set her drink down and shook her head. "Because he deserves better. Even if he did feel the same, it doesn't matter because I'm not good enough for him. There's too much red in my ledger to be with a man like him."
Wanda frowned. "I don't believe that. You're a hero now. No one holds you accountable for the things you did. Especially not Cap. You should talk to him. Maybe it will make you feel better." Wanda suggested, walking away to meet up with Tony.
Step one was complete. Now they just had to get them to talk to each other.
Peter was sent in next. His job was to isolate them so they could have some alone time.
Between Steve's shyness and Natasha's knack for drinking alone, Peter had a big job to do.
He started out by approaching Steve...he was the less frightening of the two.
"Hey uh Cap. Mr. Stark got drunk and is trying to get into your room. You might want to go check it out." Peter lied.
Steve thanked Peter and went to the elevator.
Then Peter told Natasha the same thing except that Tony was asking for her specifically to help him.
She also went to the elevator to go up to Steve's floor and help.
When they both got up to his floor, Tony wasn't there.
Natasha sighed when she saw Steve. "Have you seen Tony? Apparently he's a drunken mess again."
Steve shook his head. "No, but I heard the same thing. Peter told me he was trying to get into my room."
Natasha nodded. "That's what he told me. And also that he was asking for me."
Steve opened his door and looked inside. "Well he isn't in here."
Natasha rolled her eyes. "I'm not really in the mood to play hide and seek with him."
Steve nodded. "Yeah me neither. Maybe he went to your room..."
Natasha nodded and they went back to the elevator to check her room.
They got in and went up to her floor but still couldn't find Tony.
They didn't realize that he was sitting in a security room with his teammates watching the scenario he set up.
Natasha went into her room and Steve followed behind, helping her search for him.
He had barely entered her small apartment when the door slammed shut and locked.
"What the hell?" Natasha mumbled, going towards it.
Steve tried to open it but it didn't budge. Then Tony's voice came through the speakers.
"Hey guys. Don't worry about the party anymore. Just enjoy some enforced alone time after your mission. You can thank me later." He said before cutting the sound off.
"Damn him." Natasha mumbled.
Steve sighed and leaned against the door. "Should we even bother trying to get out?"
Natasha shrugged. "Nope. Why don't we just watch some movies until they set you free?"
They went to turn the TV on and find a movie but quickly noticed that all of the movies were disabled except for the romantic ones.
"You think Tony has something to do with this?" Steve asked.
Natasha nodded. "Absolutely."
They ended up picking one eventually and then they just sat together on opposite ends of the couch.
In the security room, Peter was getting nervous. "It's not working." He whispered.
"Relax kid. I've got this." Tony told him, pressing a button that made the room as cold as possible. "Maybe they'll resort to body heat if it gets cold enough."
Peter nodded in agreement and they watched the screen again.
Natasha was the first to notice the cold. She shivered and hugged her knees to her chest.
After a few more minutes of freezing. She got up to fix the thermostat, which she found to be disabled.
Steve turned around when he heard her curse.
Natasha figured out what Tony was doing. He wasn't discreet. But she was secretly hoping that maybe it would work. So rather then tell Steve what she found, she shrugged.
"It's getting cold in here but my thermostat is broken."
Steve frowned. "Wanna grab some blankets?"
Natasha nodded and brought over the few blankets she kept in her room.
"This is all I have." She told him.
Steve nodded and only accepted one, letting her have the other two.
After another 30 minutes the temperature was worse. Both of them were shivering and the blankets weren't helping.
Natasha was the first to suggest body heat as well. "Come here." She said, inviting him to move closer.
"What?" Steve asked confused at the sudden invitation.
"If we sit closer the body heat might help warm us up. So come here." She explained.
Steve moved closer to her and Natasha planted herself in his lap, clinging onto to him for warmth.
In the security room. Tony and the others high-fived.
"What now?" Wanda asked.
Tony pressed another button. "We eliminate all distractions."
In the room, the movie went out and all the lights turned off. Steve sighed. "Nat, sorry to inform you, but your apartment is falling apart." He joked.
Natasha rolled her eyes. "It was fine until you came in here."
Steve smiled. "You know, I'm starting to think Tony is behind all of this."
Natasha nodded. "He definitely is."
"Why? What's he trying to do?"
Natasha gazed up at Steve. He really has no idea. "Well, if I had to guess I would say he's trying to set us up."
Steve's eyes widened and he blushed. "Us? Why?"
Natasha smirked. "Don't sound too happy Rogers. Might hurt my feelings."
Steve regained his composure and he forced a laugh. "Sorry. I was just surprised. It not like I would mind... I mean- it wouldn't be so bad for me. Unless you thought it would be." He said, turning red in the cheeks again.
Natasha smiled up at Steve. "I wouldn't mind either...what do you think he would have us do right now if we were to be set up?" She teased.
Steve paused.
In the security room, all four of them were sharing a bucket of popcorn. Tony threw it at the screen. "Just kiss for God's sake."
Steve looked down at Natasha again and grabbed her hand. "I guess he would have me ask you out..."
Natasha raised her eyebrows. "Really? I would have thought he would have us kiss."
Steve laughed. "Why not both?"
Natasha laughed again before grabbing Steve's chin and pulling him towards her for a kiss.
She wrapped her arms around his neck and let the blankets around her fall to the floor.
Steve kissed back with as much intensity as possible. He had been waiting so long for this.
When they pulled apart, Natasha smiled. "If you're still asking, I'd love to go out with you."
Steve nodded. "I'm definitely still asking."
"Good." Natasha said with a smile. "Now let's go kill Tony."
