Scared to Death
Natasha goes missing on a mission and Steve is worried sick.
Five days, twelve hours, and fifty minutes....that's how long it had been since Natasha had been declared MIA.
Steve hadn't slept, he'd hardly eaten, and the only water he drank was from his sink when his throat was too sore to even talk.
"Clint, any word on her yet?" Steve asked Clint, knowing what the answer would be.
Clint sighed and shook his head. He looked almost as bad as Steve, "No. We thought we might've found a lead but it was nothing. She's completely off the grid."
Steve frowned, "Okay. Thanks....let me know if anything comes up."
Clint nodded and promised for the sixth time that day that he would.
Steve retreated back to his floor and paced up and down the small living room. His eyes locked n the jacket Natasha had left at his place the last time she had spent the night and his heart ached.
If he knew that her leaving for that mission would have meant she would go missing, he'd of held her in his arms until she missed the window to leave. She'd have been pissed at him, but at least she'd be safe.
He picked up his phone and quickly found Natasha's contact, calling it even though he knew she wouldn't respond...at the very least he would be able to hear her voice on the voicemail.
Sighing again, Steve walked over to his desk and examined the last few sketches he had done of her. He could never quite capture the look of pure love in her eyes that was present when she looked at him but he remembered it like it was yesterday.
"Where are you Nat?" He whispered, growing more and more worried by the second.
At that exact moment, Clint burst through his doors with wide eyes, "Steve we've got something."
Steve turned around quickly, shoving his phone and the picture into his pocket before sprinting behind Clint.
"What is it? Do we have a location?" He asked.
Bruce nodded, "We just got a message from the people who took her. I'm not sure you want to see it."
Steve frowned, his throat going dry, "Is she dead?"
Tony shook his head, "Not yet. But if we don't get there soon she might be."
Steve grabbed the tablet the message was on, "Lets get going then. I'll watch it in the jet."
They nodded an all ran to the fastest jet they could find.
Once they were in the air, Steve looked at the screen and hesitated.
"You don't have to watch it Steve..." Tony said, sensing his reluctance to do so.
Steve shook his head, "Yes I do. I need to know what we are walking into."
He pressed play on the message and saw Natasha tied up to a chair. She was covered in blood, cuts, and bruises. Her lip was busted open and her left eye was surrounded by a dark bruise that made him want to kill whoever had touched her.
Someone walked into the room she was sitting in and Steve tensed up, wishing he could jump through the screen and strangle them.
"Natalia," They spat, coming towards her with a knife in their hand, "When are you going to give up?"
To most people, Natasha would have looked as cool and collected as always. But Steve could see that she was terrified. It was written in her eyes.
His breath hitched and he watched as she glared at him, "I don't give up Ivan. You should know that by now. There's only two ways this ends. I escape, or you kill me. There's no ending where I join you again. That's well behind me."
The man, whose name was apparently Ivan, grimaced at her and shoved the knife into her abdomen, making her fight against her tight restraints in pain.
Steve frowned and watched as she spit blood at him, "Go to hell."
He twisted the knife and Natasha screamed in pain.
"You're little boyfriend and his team are going to see this. They're going to know how much pain I'm causing you. We'll see if they make it here in time. Even the famous Black Widow can't survive a major artery bleeding out."
Steve stood up, "How far are we?"
Clint checked the GPS, "A little less then an hour."
Steve sighed and looked back to the screen, Ivan yanked the knife out of her stomach and her face contorted in pain once again.
Steve stood up as the screen faded back, "Clint we've gotta get there faster. She's going to bleed out if we don't get to her."
"The jet is at full speed Cap. This is as fast as we can get there."
Turning back around, Steve cursed and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
Natasha couldn't die. She couldn't just leave him like this. They had only just started their life together.
When the jet finally got there, Steve bolted out of it and stormed into the building, taking out the KGB agents one by one.
He didn't have a plan. There wasn't time for that. But as he fought through every soldier, he didn't need one. Adrenaline and his desire to save her was fueling his every move.
Nothing mattered but getting to Natasha.
When he finally did, Ivan was standing over her pale body, "Welcome Captain-"
Steve threw his shield instantly, he didn't have time for a monologue.
Ivan fell dead and Steve ran to Natasha, pressing his hand to her wound to stop the bleeding and gently cupping her face, "Nat? Come on Natasha, open your eyes. You've gotta be okay. We're gonna get you some help."
Her eyes remained closed but Steve could feel her pulse slightly.
He slashed the ropes binding her in place and swooped her into his arms, rushing back to the quin-jet with her in his arms.
"Stay with me Nat," He whispered, setting her down and putting more pressure on her wound.
Clint grabbed the first aid kit and they all gathered to try and stop the bleeding.
When they finally got to the hospital, she was rushed to surgery and Steve couldn't stop pacing the waiting room.
Fourteen hours passed before they got any news.
Steve rushed to the nurse as soon as she stepped foot into the room, "Is she gonna be okay?"
The nurse nodded, "She's stable for now. One of you can visit her but she's still unconscious."
Steve looked at his teammates and they all nodded, encouraging him to go. He followed behind the nurse and sat besides Natasha's bed, holding her hand delicately.
She stirred and Steve sighed in relief, pressing a light kiss to her hand.
"Steve?" She whispered.
Steve stroked a piece of hair from her face and smiled softly at her, "Hey, how are you feeling."
"Like shit, but better now that you're here," She said, stroking his hand with her thumb.
Steve sighed, "I'm sorry we took so long to get to you Nat. I was losing my mind trying to find you."
She shook her head, "It's not your fault Steve. You found me. That's enough for me. Even if you didn't find me, it still wouldn't have been your fault."
Steve frowned, "I still feel awful."
"Don't Steve. Please. You saved me, and I love you for it. Don't beat yourself up over this. Instead, why don't you lay down."
Steve sighed but did as she asked, "Promise you'll tell me if I hurt you."
"I will Steve, you know I will."
Steve nodded and kissed her forehead softly, "I love you Natasha."
She sighed and nuzzled further into him, "I love you too."
