Regret
Requested by Witchcraft12, Steve stays old and Natasha gets married later on. He goes to the wedding.
I changed this slightly to make it more Romanogers but the main plot is still what was requested.
*EDIT: STEVE IS ONLY TEN YEARS OLDER THEN HE WAS WHEN HE LEFT IN THIS CHAPTER. HE IS NOT OLD😂😂😂*
Steve had known he had made a mistake the moment he stayed in the past.
Peggy, she was his first love. And seeing her again had been wonderful for a short amount of time.
But then he realized that his love for her had died away into something more platonic.
He still loved her, but it was nothing compared to the love he felt for Natasha.
But she was gone, so he tried to stay with Peggy until he realized just how selfish his choice had been.
Eventually, he confessed the truth to Peggy, leaving her to live out her life while he stayed away, waiting for Hank Pym to create the particles he would need to get back home.
He was older when it happened, but finally he was able to return.
When Steve arrived in the woods, he was confused to find that Sam, Bucky and Bruce were all gone.
"Hello?" He called out.
No one answered and Steve looked down at his suit, his brows furrowing.
His eyes checked the date and he cursed, "Shit."
He had accidentally set the date for 10 years after his departure.
Steve looked around and walked towards where the compound used to be.
It was still there, but it looked abandoned.
He walked inside hesitantly and frowned, "Sam? Buck? Is there anyone here?"
His voice echoed off the walls with no response.
Steve was confused for a minute before finally looking for his phone.
He dialed Sam's number and tapped his foot, waiting anxiously for a response.
"Hello?" Sam asked.
"Sam! It's me."
There was a pause, "Steve?"
"Yeah, I messed up, I set my date wrong. Where is everyone?"
"Hold on man, are you at the compound?"
"Yeah."
"Alright, I'm not far. I'll come pick you up."
Steve frowned, "Sam what's going on? Where is everyone?"
Before answering, Sam hung up, leaving Steve confused.
About fifteen minutes later, Sam pulled up.
He stayed in the car for a minute, his phone to his ear and talking in a quiet whisper before nodding and hanging up.
"Sam, can you please tell me what's going on?" Steve asked, approaching his car.
Sam got out and shook his head in shock, "We all thought you were dead Steve. Everyone, Bucky, Bruce... What the hell happened?"
Steve sighed, "I thought I could go back. To the past. I thought I could go back with Peggy and have a life with her, but I couldn't. Natasha...I couldn't move on from her. So I waited until I could come back. I was there for ten years before I got more particles, but I entered the year wrong."
Sam frowned, "Man, I don't know how to tell you this...a lot has changed since you left."
Steve's brows furrowed and he began to worry that someone had died, "What happened?"
Sam sighed, "Natasha...she's alive."
Steve's jaw dropped and he could feel his heart stop momentarily, "What?"
Sam shook his head, unsure how to explain, "A week after you didn't return, Thor came back to Earth. They had found a way to return anyone lost to the soul stone. They got her back."
Steve's throat felt dry and he felt regret coursing through his veins, "She thinks I'm dead?"
"She did, but I just called her. She wants to see you."
Steve started walking towards Sam's car, but Sam grabbed his arm, "Steve wait."
"What?" Steve asked, eager to reunite with Natasha.
Sam sighed, "Natasha... she's engaged."
Steve's heart dropped in his chest and he found his breath leaving him, "Oh."
Sam frowned, "I'm sorry man. I know you loved her. She loved you too. She didn't move on for nine years, but then she met Charlie, and he's a good guy, he really is, and I think she found someone she could be happy with."
Steve nodded slowly, having trouble processing the news, "Yeah, I'm happy for her. She deserved to be happy. I wasn't here to make sure that happened. I'm glad someone else was."
His throat was tight, he tried to contain his grief.
He couldn't be upset about her moving on. He had been gone for 10 years. He could hardly blame her for moving on.
"Do you still want to see her?" Sam asked.
Steve nodded, he needed to see her, "Yes. Can you drive me to her?"
Sam nodded sadly and they drove silently to the new Avengers compound where Natasha was living.
They had barely pulled up when Steve saw Natasha standing by the curb, her eyes locked with his and he opened the door, not caring if the car was still in motion.
Natasha practically ran into Steve, her arms flying around his neck and her hands running over his face as she laughed in relief
Steve pulled away and cupped her face in his hands gently, shaking his head with tears in his eyes, "You're alive."
She laughed and nodded, "So are you."
Steve hugged her again and shook his head, "This is all insane Nat. I can't believe you're here."
Natasha frowned, "I can't believe you're here. I came back and heard that you were dead."
Steve frowned, "I messed up. I put the wrong date in. I thought I could go back to the past and live with Peggy. I couldn't."
"Why?" Natasha asked, her eyes scanning Steve's face carefully.
His eyes landed on the small engagement ring on her finger and he shook his head, forcing a smile, "Doesn't matter. I'm here now."
Natasha bit her lip not sure how to continue the conversation.
Steve reached for her hand and held it up, gesturing towards her ring, "Congratulations....you gonna tell me about him?"
Natasha gave Steve a small smile, "His name's Charlie. We met about a year and a half ago. He works for Shield."
Steve forced a smile, "That great Nat. I'm happy for you."
Natasha frowned, "Thank you...but I want you to know Steve, I never thought you would be back. If I had, I don't know if I would be engaged right now."
Steve closed his eyes shut, "Please don't Natasha. It hurts too much. Just tell me you're happy and I'll be okay."
She paused, pondering the question herself. She was happy, or at least as happy as she could have been without Steve. Slowly, she nodded, "I am."
Steve nodded and smiled at her sadly again, "That's all I could ever hope for you."
He kissed Natasha's cheek, his lips lingering on her skin a moment longer then necessary, "You wanna show me around inside? This is all new to me."
Natasha nodded and led him inside, showing him the rest of the building.
He stayed quiet most of the time, wanting nothing more then to confess his love for her.
When he finally went into one of the spare rooms they had to sleep, he let himself be overcome with regret.
He hated himself for trying to find love again with Peggy even when his heart belonged to Natasha.
He hated that he typed the wrong date in.
He hated that she moved on. Even if it was ten years later.
Steve had come to find out that he arrived back just in time for Natasha's wedding.
It was a week from that day.
Natasha had invited him and despite how badly he wanted to say no, he couldn't resist when he looked into her pleading eyes.
He knew that if he refused Natasha would know that her moving on brought him pain, and the last thing he wanted was for her to feel the same regret he did.
So he would just have to suck it up.
----------
"You must be Captain Rogers," A voice said behind Steve while he was making a pot of coffee.
Steve turned around and saw a man with light brown hair smiling at him.
Steve nodded, "Please, call me Steve. You must be Charlie."
He nodded and shook Steve's hand, "I was glad to hear of your return the other day. Natasha really missed you."
Steve forced a smile, "Thank you. And I missed her too. I'm just glad she found someone who makes her happy." He lied.
Charlie shrugged, "I try."
Steve poured himself a coffee and sat down at the counter, silently praying the conversation would end.
"I assume she's already invited you to the wedding tomorrow?" Charlie asked.
Steve nodded, "Yes. I'll be there."
Charlie smiled, but Steve wasn't sure it was completely genuine, "Great. It'll be nice for her to have another friend there."
Steve frowned, noticing the emphasis Charlie had put on the word friend, "Is there a problem?"
Charlie shook his head, "I hope not. I just don't want you coming back and jeopardizing what I have with Natasha. It took me a long time to gain her trust. I'd hate for it to go to waste."
Steve's brows furrowed, "I'm not here to jeopardize anything. All I care about is that Natasha is happy. And if you make her happy, then I can live with that."
Charlie nodded, walking behind Steve and towards the elevator again, "Good."
Steve grabbed his arm, and stopped him, standing up and looking at him cautiously, "But if you hurt her, I won't hesitate to make your life a living hell."
Charlie clenched his jaw and walked away.
Steve sighed and put his face in his hands, wondering how he could have let her slip away.
--------------------
The wedding came too fast for Steve.
He had only just found out that Natasha was alive and now she was getting married to someone who he honestly thought was a jackass.
He was walking to the venue with Sam and Bucky when he realized he left his tie in the hotel room.
He quickly jogged back to get it and grabbed the tie. Trying to fix it as he walked back to the elevator.
Because he wasn't watching where he was going, he accidentally ran into someone, catching them before they could fall.
His eyes widened in surprise as he looked at Natasha.
Her cheeks were flushed and she looked absolutely stunning in her wedding dress.
"Wow." He whispered, helping her stand again.
Natasha smirked a little, "Too much?"
Steve shook his head, "Not at all, you look breath taking. Charlie's a lucky guy."
Natasha smiled slightly and took the tie around Steve's neck into her hands, fixing it for him.
"Thank you." He whispered, his heart beating because of their close proximity.
She nodded, "Of course...you know I'd do anything for you."
Steve smiled and brought her hand up to kiss her hand, "As would I. I should get going. I'll see you on the aisle."
She nodded and smiled, watching him go.
Steve sighed and squeezed his eyes shut, he really had to get a hold of himself.
He sat down next to Sam and frowned.
How was he supposed to watch the woman he loved get married and pretend to be happy about it.
"Sam I don't know if I can do this.." Steve whispered, but before he had a chance to leave, music began playing and Natasha was walking down the aisle.
Steve's eyes caught hers again as she walked and she smiled shyly at him, not looking away until she was passed his row.
The ceremony began and Steve found himself unable to do anything but watch Natasha.
She was smiling, but it looked forced.
The officiant looked to the crowd, "If anyone has reason to believe these two should not be married today, speak now or forever hold your peace."
Natasha's eyes found Steve's and she watched him carefully. He looked down, he couldn't do that to her.
The priest continued and Steve's heart felt as though it was being ripped to pieces.
Charlie said his vows and it was Natasha's turn.
"Natasha Romanoff, do you take Charlie Bambauch to be your husband?"
Natasha's mouth opened and she paused, "I-"
Her eyes found Steve's once again and his brows furrowed. Wondering what she was doing.
"I can't. I'm sorry Charlie."
She slipped off her heels and walked quickly down the aisle, holding her dress up as she did so.
Charlie's eye's widened and he went to chase after her only to be stopped by Clint.
"Nope," He said, stepping in front of Charlie before turning to Steve and giving him a small nod.
Steve practically sprinted out of the small venue, his eyes searching for Natasha.
Eventually, he found her sitting on a bench in the hotel garden, her knees pulled up to her chest and her eyes locked on the pond in front of her.
"Nat?" Steve asked quietly, approaching her.
Natasha looked up at him and sighed, "I'm a terrible person."
Steve shook his head, sitting besides her, "No, you're not a terrible person. You're human."
"I shouldn't have ever said yes to his proposal. I don't love him Steve. I never did. How could I after you? But I thought that you were gone forever. And I figured that eventually, I might grow to love him..."
She shook her head, "And then Sam called and said you were back, and I was overjoyed and full of regret at the same time. I almost called off the engagement before even seeing you."
Natasha looked up at Steve, her eyes glossy, "But I couldn't because I was afraid. Charlie had already promised to never leave me. But with you...I didn't even know if you felt the same. I still don't. Seeing you today though, I just couldn't go through with the wedding. It wouldn't be fair to Charlie, to you, or to me. I couldn't look him in the eye and say I do when you were watching only twenty feet away."
Steve frowned at her pained expression and wrapped his arm around her, pulling her in for a hug and combing his fingers through her hair.
"I love you Natasha. I'm sorry I wasn't here all those years. But when I came back and heard you had moved on, I felt like I had just been shot. I thought if you were happy, then I could live with it, but now, seeing you aren't... I can't not tell you how I feel." Steve confessed.
Natasha stared into his eyes for a moment before whispering her own confession, "I love you too."
Steve smiled and kissed her cheek gently, "I want to kiss you so bad right now Natasha, but first you have to go explain to Charlie what happened."
Natasha sighed, "I know...do you have your own hotel room?"
Steve nodded, "107."
"I'll go deal with him and the wedding and then meet you up there?"
Steve smiled and kissed her hand again, "Alright."
She walked away and Steve retreated back to his hotel room, feeling over the moon.
He knew he should feel guilty, but honestly, he had been guilty over so many things in his life, just for once he wanted to not give a damn and be selfish.
Natasha didn't knock on his door until almost midnight, her eyes were tired and she had changed out of her wedding dress and into sweats.
"Hey." She whispered, forcing a smile.
Steve pulled her to sit in his lap on the bed and brushed her hair out of her face, "You alright."
Natasha nodded, "Yeah. That was just a lot harder then I expected. He really was a good guy. He just wasn't you. And that was hard to explain."
Steve sighed, "I'm sorry I came back and messed everything up."
"I'm not. You saved me from a loveless marriage. Plus now I have you. What more could I ask for?"
Steve smiled, "I love you so much Natasha. You're incredible."
Natasha smiled back and rested her head on his, "I love you too. And now that I'm officially single, how about that kiss?"
Steve chuckled and pressed his lips to Natasha, kissing her with everything he had.
Natasha moaned into the kiss and pushed him down onto the bed, "This isn't exactly how I expected my wedding night to end, but I like this much better..." She whispered, kissing up and down his jaw and neck.
Steve chuckled, "Me too."
Hey guys. My chapters are becoming insanely long and I think I have a problem.
But I hope you enjoyed this chapter! I wanted to end it with Romanogers so I didn't make him super old. Just a little older.
Let me know what you thought by voting or commenting please!!
Also! If you didn't watch the Golden globes tonight, it was kind of sad bc Scarlett didn't win but her and Chris presented an award together so I'm living for the Evansson content...I mean, just look at this pic...
