Preparations for the Unknown
Requested by ROMANOFFWARRIOR, Natasha is pregnant and her and Steve go shopping for baby stuff and when they come back they have a fluffy conversation.
"Steve I have no idea what I should even be looking for," Natasha complained, sifting through the hundreds of baby clothes on the rack.
Steve laughed quietly, "Right now we just need to get the things he'll need when he comes home and the essentials."
Natasha sighed, "Am I supposed to know what that means?"
Steve smiled and held out his hand to Natasha, who took it with a slight eye roll as he led her towards the back of the store, "I'm sure you know more then you think."
Natasha shook her head, "I really don't Steve."
"Alright, let's start with a crib," Steve said, smiling at her as they walked towards the cribs.
Natasha stared at the wide variety of cribs and frowned, "Why's there so many choices? Does it matter which one we get?"
Steve shrugged, "I guess it's personal preference."
Natasha raised an eyebrow, "All of them are the exact same."
"How about that white one?" Steve asked, pointing at one.
"Steve there's eight white ones," Natasha said, sighing.
Steve chuckled, "This one," He said again, pointing more specifically at one. Natasha shrugged in response so Steve took that as a yes and grabbed a box, placing it onto the cart they had.
"What next?" Natasha asked.
Steve shrugged, "Strollers?"
Natasha nodded and they walked towards another section of the store. Once again, Natasha had no idea what the difference between the strollers was.
This time they all looked different, but she didn't understand why there was so many options. Were some of them less safe then the others? And if so, how was she supposed to know which one would be the best?
"Which one is the safest?" Natasha asked Steve, examining the strollers carefully.
Steve shrugged, "They're all safe. It's just about what kind you want."
"So it doesn't matter?"
Steve shook his head, "Not really. Which one do you like?"
Natasha pointed at one of the simpler black ones, "How about that one?"
Steve nodded with a smile and lifted the box into the cart, glad that she seemed to be getting a little more confidence about her choices.
Next they went to get some of the essentials, things like pacifiers, bottles, and a few others.
Now all they had left was to get him a few clothes.
"This is the easy part," Steve said with a small smile as he watched Natasha sift through some of them.
Natasha raised an eyebrow with a small look of distaste, "I'm not putting him in any of these," She said, holding up one with rockets that said, I love my family to the moon and back.
Steve laughed and gestured to some plain ones, "You don't have to, they have plain ones."
Natasha moved towards the others and picked up a few plain ones before seeing one that was a replica of Steve's uniform.
"What about this one?" She asked with a smirk.
Steve sighed, "Are you serious?"
Natasha nodded, "What? You don't want him to be able to match you?"
"Not particularly."
Natasha held it up and smirked, "I think we have to get it."
"Nat," Steve complained, sighing again.
She grinned, "Please?"
Steve sighed, "You're gonna get it no matter what I say."
Natasha smiled and tossed it into the cart, "Yup."
He rolled his eyes with a small grin and followed her as they walked to check out.
They had been in the store for nearly three hours, so Natasha was ready to go.
Once they got everything, they brought everything back to their apartment and tried to unload everything into the nursery they had sort of prepared.
By the time they were finished it was dark out and Natasha was both tired of making decisions and ready to just lay down with Steve.
Steve sensed this and didn't bother to try and assemble anything they had bought, instead he put the last bag of clothes down on the dresser they had for him and walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her waist with a small smile, "You hungry?"
Natasha nodded, "Starving. Do we have any leftovers?"
Steve shook his head, "We finished them all. I can order some takeout if you want? Or I can cook something."
Natasha leaned against Steve's chest and sighed in contentment, "Pizza?"
Steve laughed quietly, "Sure."
Natasha smiled and leaned up to kiss Steve before going into their kitchen besides him. Steve ordered them a pizza and they ate dinner in front of a movie Steve had missed during his time in the ice like always. This time she had picked Jaws, despite hating the movie herself.
Halfway through, Steve noticed that she looked deep in thought, almost as though she was upset about something.
He paused the movie and gave her hand a light squeeze, "Hey, you alright?"
Natasha looked up, "Hm?"
Steve's eyebrows furrowed, "You look lost in thought. You alright?"
"Yeah. I'm fine. I was just thinking," Natasha said, and despite her immense ability to lie, Steve could tell something was bothering her.
"You sure?" Steve asked, gently stroking her hair as he watched her look down with a small frown. He lifted her chin and frowned, "You know you can tell me anything right?"
Natasha nodded, "I know...I'm just worried I'm not ready for this."
Steve frowned, "What do you mean? We have everything we could ever need."
Natasha shook her head, "Not like that. What if I'm not ready to be a mom? Steve, I don't know anything about kids. What if I'm terrible with him?"
Steve frowned, "Nat don't say that. You're going to be a great mom. You don't have to know anything about kids yet. You'll learn. We both will."
"What if I can't Steve? I was brought up in the most hostile environment imaginable. How am I supposed to know how to be nurturing if the only thing I know how to do is kill?" Natasha asked quietly, her eyes watering slightly.
Steve frowned and pulled Natasha towards him, resting one hand on her stomach and sifting through her hair with the other, "Natasha don't say that. You're the most caring person I know, and I know there's nothing in this world that will stop you from being an amazing mother."
Natasha forced a small laugh, "You have to say that, you're married to me. I don't worry about keeping him safe Steve. I worry that he'll hate me."
Steve reached up and cupped Natasha's face with his hands gently, "Are you kidding me Nat? He's going to love you. Just like Lila, Morgan, and Cooper do. Because you don't treat them like children. You're just completely real with them. You say you're not good with kids but Natasha there's not a damn kid out there who doesn't idolize you."
"I hate you," Natasha whispered, wrapping her arms around Steve's neck and sighing deeply.
"I love you-" Steve said, kissing her hairline delicately, "-just like our son will."
"I love you too Steve," Natasha whispered softly, kissing Steve softly.
Steve stood up and grabbed Natasha's hand, pulling her to her feet with a smile.
"What are you doing?" Natasha asked with a slight laugh.
Steve grinned and turned some music on, "May I have this dance?"
Natasha rolled her eyes but accepted his hand anyways, "I don't know how well I can dance right now...our son is gonna get in the way."
Steve smiled and swayed slowly with Natasha, his hands resting on her waist, "When should we start thinking of names for him?"
Natasha leaned her head on Steve's shoulder the best she could, "I've actually been thinking a little bit and I thought maybe we could name him James."
Steve's eyes softened and he raised an eyebrow slightly, "After Bucky?"
Natasha nodded, "I know how much he means to you. Plus our mission where he almost killed both of us is when I fell in love with you."
Steve laughed and kissed Natasha, pulling away with a wide smile, "I love you so much."
Natasha grinned, "I take it you like the name then?"
"I love it. It's perfect," Steve said, kissing her again.
"James Rogers," Natasha said, as if she was testing out how the name sounded.
Steve smiled, "How about James Clinton Rogers?"
"Really?" Natasha asked, liking the idea of partially naming him after her own best friend.
Steve nodded, "Yeah. I think its perfect."
Natasha smiled, "Then it's settled, James Clinton Rogers."
"I love it...I love you."
"I love you too," Natasha whispered, moving back so she could take Steve's hands in her own, "But now I'm exhausted."
Steve laughed as Natasha turned around and pulled him back towards their bedroom, not wasting any time before getting underneath the covers and curling up against Steve's body as his arms wrapped around her.
"Goodnight," She whispered as her eyes shut.
Steve smiled down at her and brushed a stray piece of hair from her face, "Goodnight Nat."
She moved closer to him subconsciously and Steve couldn't help but wonder what he had done to deserve being in that moment. Lying in the bed he shared with the love of his life who was also carrying his child.
He didn't see how it got much better then that.
Hey guys, I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. It was pretty fluffy and I don't write a ton of pregnant Natasha so it was pretty fun to write.
