Payphone

Everywhere Steve goes, he tries to call Natasha using a payphone. Set when he's on the run with Sam and they haven't reunited with Nat yet.

"Steve you coming?" Sam asked, pausing at the door to the motel they were staying in that night.

Steve nodded, "I'll be in in a while, I think I'm gonna take a walk."

Sam nodded and walked inside the room while Steve walked towards the small town, his hood up and his face down so that he wouldn't be recognized.

Being on the run with Sam hadn't been terrible. They had gotten Bucky the help he needed and for that, Steve was grateful. But now that it was done, he found himself sick with worry for Natasha.

He hadn't heard from her since the day she let them escape and he was sure that she faced hell for doing it.

He knew she wasn't arrested, there had been articles all over displaying the people who had been arrested. She wasn't one of them.

He wasn't sure if she was on the run, or if she had just gotten away with letting them escape.

Either way, he wanted to talk to her again. To see her.

Steve missed her more then he thought possible.

So when he saw a small payphone he couldn't help but find himself walking towards it.

Her phone number ran through his head, he had memorized it after the Hydra fiasco just in case he needed to contact her.

He stepped up to the phone and inserted the change needed to make a call.

He dialed her number quickly, holding the phone to his ear and tapping his foot anxiously.

The phone rang for a minute before the line went dead. Steve frowned and sighed, hanging up the phone.

He walked back to the motel, feeling worse then before.

Sam could tell. He watched over the next few weeks as Steve got more and more worried.

"You okay man?" He asked.

Steve nodded but it was hardly believable, "Yeah I'm good."

Sam narrowed his eyes at Steve and sighed, "It's her isn't it? Natasha?"

Steve sighed, "I'm worried about her."

"Have you tried contacting her?" Sam asked.

Steve nodded, "I called her from a payphone back in Chicago. There was no answer."

Sam reached into his pocket and handed Steve his spare change, "Well, there's a payphone right outside the motel. Maybe you should give it another go."

Steve gave Sam a small smile and nodded, "Thanks Sam."

"No problem."

Steve walked down to the phone and put the change in, once again, dialing the number to her phone.

It rang five times before once again, the line went dead.

Steve frowned and hung his head.

He walked back to the room and shook his head at Sam.

"I'm sorry man. I'm sure she's alright though. She's one tough chick."

Steve nodded, "I know. I just miss her."

Sam's eyes widened in understanding, "You love her."

Steve's brows furrowed, "What?"

"I don't know how I didn't see it before...you're in love with her."

Steve shook his head and looked down, "No... Natasha, she's just a friend."

Sam raised an eyebrow, "You sure? Because from my experience friends don't look at each other the way you two look at each other."

Steve sighed, "So what if I do love her? She's not here. And even if she was, I doubt she'd feel the same."

Sam shrugged, "You never know. Maybe she does. I'm rooting for you two."

Steve forced a chuckle and nodded, "Thanks Sam."

"No problem. Now, I'm going to bed. If you wanna try calling her again, there's a little bit of spare change left on the counter."

Steve nodded and Sam left to go to sleep.

Steve stared at the change on the counter and sighed.

He tried to tell himself it would be a waste of money. She hadn't answered the first few times, why would now be different.

But when he tried to force himself to go to sleep, he couldn't.

All he could think about was hearing her voice.

Cursing quietly to himself, he slipped on some shoes and grabbed the change from the counter, walking to payphone for the second time that night.

Once again, he dialed her number and waited hopefully.

It rang four times and Steve almost hung up but there was a small click from the other line and then he heard her voice.

"Hello?" She said.

Steve's throat felt dry. Now that she answered he had no idea what to say.

"Hello?" She asked again, sounding slightly irritated, "Who is this?"

"It's me," Steve said quietly.

There was a pause from the other line, "Steve?"

Steve let out a small laugh of relief, "Yeah."

"What are you doing? Are you guys alright?"

Steve nodded despite knowing she couldn't see him, "Yeah, we're all fine. Are you? I've been worried..."

Natasha paused, "I'm alright. I've been laying low. The government isn't happy with me. Neither is Tony."

Steve frowned, "You're on the run?"

"Yeah."

Steve sighed, "Where are you?"

"Right now? Moscow. But I'm taking a train to Berlin tomorrow morning. Where are you guys at?"

Steve frowned, "Madrid."

"That's not far. It seems foolish to be this close and not join forces," Natasha said and Steve could practically see the smirk on her lips.

He smiled, "Well we certainly wouldn't want to be foolish."

"How about we have a randevou point in Monaco. Two days from today."

Steve's heart was already racing at the thought of seeing her again, "Where?"

"The Monte Carlo train station...11 am. Don't be late."

Steve nodded, "Okay."

The phone beeped, letting Steve now that he was almost out of time.

"I'm almost out of time. I'll see you in two days?" Steve said, smiling at the thought.

"Yeah."

Steve sighed, "Good...I missed you Nat."

Natasha paused for a moment, "I missed you too Steve. Now I've gotta go. I'll see you soon."

Steve smiled and the line went dead.

He went back to his room and fell asleep quickly, just wanting the next four days to go quickly so he could see Natasha again.

The next morning he woke Sam up by throwing the bag onto his bed and throwing their things in it.

Sam frowned, "Where are we going?"

Steve smiled, "Monaco."

Sam narrowed his eyes and raised an eyebrow, "Why do you look so happy about that?"

"Because Natasha's meeting us there."

Sam laughed and got up, "Then we better get going."

Steve nodded and they went to the train station as quickly as they could. They're train ride would be almost 20 hours long, making them arrive there with just enough time to prepare.

He and Sam could only get a train that night, so they would be cutting it close.

The train ride itself went by painfully slow. Sam slept most of the ride and Steve just stared out the window, waiting anxiously to see Natasha again.

"Are you going to tell her?" Sam asked from besides him.

Steve shrugged, "I don't know."

Sam nodded and sighed, "If something happened, and one of you got killed...would you want her to know how you felt?"

Steve nodded and Sam shrugged, "Then I think you should tell her. In this world, who knows what could happen. You don't want to risk missing your chance."

"You think she'll feel the same?" Steve asked.

Sam shrugged, "I do...but there's only one way for you to be sure."

Steve nodded, "You're right. I'll tell her."

Sam smiled, "Good to hear. Now you've got 15 hours to think of what you wanna say."

Steve chuckled and looked out the window, doing exactly that.

When they arrived in Monaco, it was 8 am on the day they were meant to meet Natasha.

"What time are we meeting her?" Sam asked.

"Eleven," Steve said, "Do you wanna grab us some food while we wait?"

Sam nodded and walked towards a food stand while Steve sat at a bench near where her train was meant to arrive.

They ate quietly, Steve's eyes locked on the train track.

"It's almost eleven...." Sam said, looking around, "You sure this is where her train gets in?"

Steve nodded, "She said she was going to Milan first, this is the train from Milan to Monaco."

"Okay."

Steve stood up when the train arrived and watched the crowd of people carefully, waiting to spot Natasha.

He spotted her getting off the train and locked eyes with her.

She smiled at him and he walked towards her quickly.

Steve opened his arms and she crashed into his embrace, wrapping her arms around his torso and burying her head in his chest.

"I missed you." Steve whispered into her hair.

Natasha pulled away and smiled, "I missed you too. Where's Sam?"

Steve pointed to the bench where Sam was watching the two with a small smirk.

"It's good to see you Natasha," Sam said, hugging her.

Natasha smiled back, "You too sam."

After the short reunion, the three left the train station, "I've got a safehouse here, it's about twenty minutes away," Natasha said, walking towards the street.

"How do we get there?" Sam asked.

"If we take a taxi halfway there it's only a mile walk."

Steve frowned, "We don't have any money."

Natasha rolled her eyes, "It's a good thing you have me then."

Steve nodded and they hailed a taxi, all three of them squeezing into the small vehicle.

Natasha gave the driver an address since she was the only one who could speak fluent French.

Halfway in the ride, she leaned her head on Steve's shoulder and sighed.

When they finally arrived at Natasha's safehouse, Sam excused himself, saying he was going to take a shower and discreetly winking at Steve as he left the room.

Natasha sat by Steve on the dusty couch and sighed, "I'm sorry I didn't side with you about the accords...I thought signing them would mean we could keep the team together. Clearly I was wrong about that."

"You did what you thought was right. I could never be upset with you for that. Plus you saved my ass at the airport. I still owe you for that."

Natasha smirked, "I think we're pretty much even by now."

Steve smiled and took Natasha's hand in his own, "I was really worried about you after we left. How did Tony take it?"

Natasha frowned, "He was mad...said a few things I hope he didn't mean. But he'll get over it eventually."

"I'm sorry I couldn't go back for you."

Natasha shook her head, "Don't be. I was fine on my own for a little while. And now you are back."

Steve smiled, "There's something I need to tell you but I'm not sure how you'll react..."

Natasha's brows furrowed and she tilted her head slightly, her thumb slowly stroking Steve's hand, "What?"

Steve sighed, "I love you."

Natasha's eyes widened and she was quiet for a moment, "What?" She whispered.

Steve frowned, "I shouldn't have said anything....I'm sorry Nat-"

Natasha inturrupted him, "Steve please say it again."

Steve sighed, "I love you."

Natasha smiled a little and cupped Steve's cheek hesitantly, her eyes full of doubt and fear, "Steve I swear to God, if you're fucking with me I'll kill you."

Steve shook his head and gave her a small reassuring smile, "I thought we already established that I'm always honest."

Natasha's smile grew and she laughed a little, "Well then I love you too."

Steve grinned and pulled Natasha into his lap. She ran her thumb over his bottom lip and pressed her forehead to his.

Steve closed his eyes and leaned forward, gently kissing her.

Natasha's hands travelled to his neck and she tried to pull him closer, deepening the kiss.

She nibbled at his bottom lip gently and moaned softly as his tongue roamed her mouth.

They didn't pull apart until they were both completely out of breath.

"Well this is quite the reunion," Natasha said with a small laugh as she rested her head on his shoulder, running her hands up and down his chest.

Steve smiled and brushed his fingers through her hair.

Natasha pulled Steve down again to peck his lips again and it turned into yet another passionate make out session.

Steve pulled her down on top of her so that he was laying on his back and she peppered kisses down his neck and jaw.

"God Nat...I love you so much." He said.

Natasha kissed him again, "I love you too Steve."

Suddenly, Sam walked into the room and cleared his throat, making Natasha and Steve jump apart. Blushes crawling up both their faces.

"Don't mind me. I just came to eat. Please... continue on."

Natasha rolled her eyes and pulled Steve off the couch, "No need... we'll just relocate."

Sam shrugged and Steve blushed as Natasha pulled him into one of the two bedrooms.

"Before anything else, I need a shower. I've been on a train for 24 hours...but I'm not opposed to saving water," Natasha said, casting Steve her signature smirk.

Steve grinned and followed behind her quickly into the bathroom.

Silently, he thanked whatever god was out there that he had enough money for that payphone.
