James Rogers
Steve and Natasha have a son named James Rogers and he is there through the entire plot of endgame. Requested by tainted_dreams.
James Rogers was born about 7 months after the snap. He was a surprise to both Natasha and Steve but they loved him more then anything.
Together, they raised him to honor their friends who had died in the snap and also to be close with the remaining avengers.
He was nearly five when they started the quest to bring everyone back.
Natasha was overwhelmed with worry.
She couldn't help thinking about all of the possible things that could go wrong. Right now she had almost everything she could have dreamed of.
A son, a loving husband, a family. She was the happiest she had ever been.
It was hard to justify putting all of that at risk.
Steve had noticed her concern. After putting James to sleep one night, he took a seat besides her and grabbed her hand. "You ok?"
Natasha nodded, "Just worried."
Steve wrapped his arm around Natasha and sighed. "Me too, but everything will be fine. The machine works. We will get the stones and be back in what'll feel like five seconds. James will never even notice we left."
"That's if everything goes according to plan...which it never does. What if...what if one of us dies? Or both of us? There's so many uncertainties. I just can't help but worry something might happen." Natasha said, looking down.
Steve frowned. "Nothing will happen Nat. And if something does happen, there are plenty of people who would do anything for James. No matter what, he will be loved. I promise."
Natasha leaned her head on Steve's shoulder and sighed. "Is it selfish that I'm worried I'll lose all this? I finally have the life I always wanted. It's hard for me to risk it all for a possible solution to the snap."
"It's not selfish. I don't want to risk it either. But I just keep telling myself that I'm doing this so that my friends can have the same chance I did. So that everyone who died or lost lived ones in the snap can have a chance to get the life we did. We have to at least try."
Natasha nodded. "I hate when you're right."
Steve laughed and kissed Natasha's forehead. "Lucky for you, that's not very often."
Natasha smiled and grabbed Steve's hand. "Promise you'll be careful tomorrow. You can't die. If you do I'll kill you."
Steve nodded. "I promise, you can't die either Nat. I'll be utterly devestated if you do."
Natasha nodded. "I won't."
Steve kissed her one more time and they went off to bed.
The next morning, they said goodbye to James a few minutes before leaving for the compound.
"I love you, be good." Natasha said, kissing her son's forehead and tickling him softly, just to hear his laugh.
James hugged her and clung to him mother's neck. "Do you have to go?"
Natasha nodded and kneeled down on the floor to be eye level with him.
"Remember when we told you about Uncle Sam, Aunt Wanda and Uncle Bucky?"
James nodded.
"Well, now we might be able to bring them home and save them. We'll be back soon though. I promise."
Steve kneeled besides Natasha and smiled at his son, who looked so much like Natasha.
He had Steve's blonde hair, but the bright forest green eyes Natasha had. The rest of his facial features leaned more towards Natasha as well.
Steve hoisted the boy into the air and laughed. "Don't worry buddy. We won't be long. Plus, you get to play with Aunt Pepper and Morgan all day. It'll be fun."
James sighed and hugged Steve tightly.
Checking the time, Natasha frowned. "We are running late, we've got to go. Bye James. I love you." She said, kissing his forehead one more time before walking out of the door.
Steve also said one last quick goodbye before following Natasha out.
Natasha sighed. "Let's go save the world again."
Steve laughed and they drove to the compound.
When they got there, it didn't take long for everyone to get ready. Steve and Natasha waited together in their old room until everyone was ready.
"I wish we were going together." Steve said, holding Natasha's hands.
"Me too. But we'll be fine. I'll be with Clint, you'll have Tony and Scott."
Steve nodded. "I know. I'm just worried, that's all."
Natasha gently pressed her lips to Steve's and sighed. "Me too. Let's just go get this done so we can get home to James."
Steve nodded and gave Natasha one more kiss before they went to join the team.
They stood in the platform ready to go when Natasha smiled over at Steve. "See you in a minute." She said, grinning.
Steve smiled and they both disappeared.
Five of the six stones were collected according to plan.
The final stone however, was the soul stone.
Natasha and Clint had arrived and found out that one of them would have to die in order to collect the stone.
Natasha sat silently on a stone and felt her heart sink. It had to be her. She couldn't let Clint die. He deserved to see his family again.
She messed with her braid and tears built up in her eyes as she thought about James.
He would grow up motherless. She hated to leave him. She hated it so much. She wanted to watch him grow up and be there for him every step of the way.
Natasha tried to fight back the tears as she thought about how she would be leaving her son.
He'll still have Steve, she kept telling herself.
Steve...he was a whole new reason she wanted to live.
"If you die, I'll be absolutely devestated." He had told her.
His words rang in her ears as she contemplated the situation.
How could she leave him alone like this? They had finally found happiness in each other and she was about to sacrifice it for a rock.
Even knowing this, she still knew it had to be her.
She even fought Clint to insure that it was.
Once she was holding his hand, dangling from the cliffs edge, she let the tears fall.
"Clint, will you tell James I love him. And Steve. Tell Steve I'm sorry and that I won't ever stop loving him."
Clint shook his head. "Please don't Natasha."
"Let me go."
He shook his head, grasping her hand.
"It's okay." She said, forcing a smile.
When Clint still didn't let her go, Natasha kicked the cliff and pushed herself out of Clint's grasp.
Steve noticed Natasha's absence as soon as everyone reappeared. Everyone but her.
"Clint...where's Nat?"
Clint fell to his knees and panic filled Steve. "Clint? Where is she? Please tell me she's ok. Clint where is she?" He asked, begging him to say she was just a few moments behind him.
Clint shook his head. "She's gone."
Steve's entire world stopped.
He stumbled backwards and lost his breath as his vision blurred with tears.
"She sacrificed herself for the stone. She told me to tell you she's sorry and that she will always love you." Clint said, still sobbing. "I tried to fight her so that it would be me. But she won."
Steve pushed out of the room and walked into the bathroom. He steadied himself on the sink and tried to stop the tears that threatened to pour.
He was in shock. How could he have lost her...the love of his life, the mother of his child, his best friend, his partner.
Natasha was Steve's everything. She couldn't be gone.
Steve wiped the tears from his cheeks and rushed out of the room to go get James.
"Steve, where are you going?" Tony called after him.
"To get James."
Tony didn't argue, he just sighed as he watched Steve drive away quickly.
Steve was quick to pick James up and try to hide his tears as he whispered what had happened to Pepper before bringing James home.
He tried not say much on the ride home. It hurt too much.
When the got home, James noticed his mother's absence. "Where's mom?" He asked quietly.
Steve pulled James into his arms and hugged him close to his chest.
"She uh...Mom won't be back for a while buddy."
James frowned. "Why not? She said it would only be a few minutes."
Steve nodded. "I know, I know she did. But mom, she did something really brave and because of what she did, she gets to go to heaven. To watch over us."
James' lip began to quiver and he shook his head. "No, mom can't go to heaven. Heaven is for dead people. Mom is alive."
Holding back a sob, Steve wiped the boy's tears away with his thumb and shook his head. "She sacrificed herself for a lot of people James. Like your aunts and uncles. She saved almost half the universe. That's why she's in heaven now." Steve tried to explain. Feeling his heart break with every word he spoke.
James began to cry and he shook his head. "I don't want them. I just want mommy."
Steve held James to his chest and tried to steady his breathing. "I know. Me too. I want her too James."
They stayed like that for a while. Steve tried to stay strong for James but on the inside he was dying. His heart felt broken and his will to live without her was only motivated by James.
He was utterly devestated, and even with James to keep him partially distracted, Steve still cried himself to sleep every night. .
He never stopped mourning for Natasha.
But still, he did his best to not break his promise. He had promised Natasha that no matter what, James Rodgers would be loved.
Hey guys. This was really long and I made myself sad writing it so I'm sorry in advance.
