It Worked
What if when Bruce snapped, it actually did bring Natasha back but she got stuck in Vormir until Steve goes to return the soul stone and finds her.
Steve arrived in Vormir feeling worse then he had since Natasha's death.
He had tried to convince himself that there was no way to save her and that he was just going to have to live without her, but a part of him felt like she had to still be savable.
Steve was angry at himself, the world, Thanos...everything that had led to her death seemed unnecessary and cruel.
She didn't deserve that.
She deserved the world, and he wanted to be the one to give it to her, but he was too late and when she died, he hadn't even revealed his feelings.
Each step towards Vormir felt like sandbags were tied around his waist, ankles, neck. It was as if he was fighting against himself to get there.
It was because he knew that once he returned the stone, he would know for sure. He would know if Natasha was truly gone.
And he wasn't ready to fully lose her.
When he finally got close to the towers, he had to close his eyes.
His mind was playing tricks on him. Surely it was a trick.
Because what he saw was Natasha sitting on a stone and staring off into the distance.
Steve opened them and cursed himself. She was still there. Playing absent-mindedly with the end of her braid.
He turned away. "Please stop." He whispered to anything that would listen. Fate, his mind, God.
Hearing the sound of Steve's footsteps, Natasha turned around quickly.
"Steve?"
Steve closed his eyes again and a tear slipped down his cheek.
He shook his head.
"Steve, it's me. It's Natasha." She said, running up to him.
"No, you died. This is just a trick." He whispered to himself.
Natasha placed both her hands on each side of Steve's face. "Steve. Look at me. I'm alive. I promise. Its not a trick."
Steve still didn't open his eyes.
"About a week ago, after I sacrificed myself, I just reappeared at the top of the cliff. The red skull didn't know what happened either, but I'm back. Just please look at me."
Steve slowly opened his eyes. They were red and tears were selling up inside them.
"Is it really you?" He whispered.
Natasha nodded.
Steve placed his hand on her cheek delicately and Natasha was overwhelmed with guilt as she realized how much her death had effected him.
"I thought I lost you forever Nat." He mumbled.
Natasha wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him in for a tight embrace. "I'm sorry." She whispered.
Steve didn't say anything he just hurried his head in Natasha's scent and held onto her like she was his lifeline.
"I though I was gonna be stuck here forever." Natasha confessed.
"I didn't have a way back home." She continued. "I guess I still don't."
Steve shook his head. "Yes you do. I brought an extra Quantum suit with more Pym particles. A part of me was praying I could get you back. I didn't know you would already be alive when I got here."
Natasha couldn't help but smile. "You really are the best."
Steve smiled for the first time since he heard Natasha died.
"Only when I'm with you." He replied.
Natasha looked up at Steve again with a smile.
"You stay here, I'm gonna go return this, and then we can go home." Steve said, holding up the case containing the soul stone.
"Okay. I'll be here."
Steve quickly returned it and then walked back to Natasha.
She smiled at him, ready to go see everyone. "Ready to go home?" She asked him, starting to walk away from Vormir.
Steve lightly grabbed her arm. "Wait just a second. Before we go I have to tell you something."
"What is it?" Natasha asked.
"After you died, I was filled with more regret then I've ever had, even more then when I woke up from the ice. Because I waited too long to tell you just how much you mean to me."
Steve paused and Natasha stepped closer to him, trying to comfort him.
"You're not just my best friend and partner Nat. I love you. More then I've ever loved anyone in my entire life. And I hate myself for waiting too long to tell you that. If you don't feel the same, please just tell me. I just had to say something before anything happens to one of us again." He said, looking down.
Natasha gently grabbed his chin and brought it up so that he was looking right at her.
"I love you too Steve." She said, pulling his lips to hers. "And nothing is going to happen to us again. Not anytime soon at least."
Steve kissed her back passionately and sighed in relief.
"Let's go home Nat."
Natasha smiled and grabbed Steve's hand as they pressed the button on their suits to go home.
So this was pretty short and has quite a few plot holes but I hope you liked it anyways.
