I won't let you do this
If Steve and Natasha had been the ones to go to Vormir instead of Clint and her.
"You ready Rodgers?" Natasha asked as they climbed towards Vormir.
Steve grinned. "Ready as ever, let's just get the stone and go home."
Natasha grinned back at Steve and they continued their hike.
"This place gives me the creeps." Natasha said as they got closer.
Steve only nodded in agreement. The closer they got, the worse he felt about the whole mission.
A ghost like figure appeared in front of the two and Natasha whipped out her gun as Steve prepared himself to fight.
"Natasha, son of Ivan. Steve, son of Sarah. Welcome."
Steve's face fell in confusion and Natasha noticed quickly that he was unsettled.
"What are you doing here. You died." Steve said, speaking to the red skull.
"I am the keeper of the soul stone now."
Natasha interrupted. "Great. Then you can tell us where to find it."
The red skull laughed. "I'm afraid it's not that simple. You see, in order to retrieve the stone, a trade must be made."
Steve's jaw clenched. "What kind of trade?"
"A soul for a soul. One of you must sacrifice something you love."
Natasha's eyes darted to Steve out of habit. She watched as his face paled and he clenched his fist.
They were both quick to figure out what had to be done, but neither of them wanted to do it.
Natasha sat down on a nearby rock with her head in his hands. She stared blankly at the ground and thought through countless senarios.
Natasha loved Steve. It wasn't even something she had to question. She was however, worried that he didn't love her, and that the only way they could retrieve the stone was by his death.
That had to be the last resort. She wouldn't...no, couldn't lose him. He was everything to her.
Steve was thinking the same thing. He knew he lived Natasha, but he couldn't sacrifice her for the stone. He just couldn't.
Steve walked up to Natasha and sat beside her.
His eyes were full of pain as he delicately took her hand in his own.
"I know this timing is horrible, but I love you Natasha. And more then anything I need you to me back so that I can be the one to die."
Natasha squeezed Steve's hand and shook her head. "I love you too Steve. Which is why I can't let you be the one to die."
Natasha stood up and Steve grabbed her arm. "Let it be me Nat. I can't live without you. You're my entire world. I don't have anyone else to live for. You have Clint, his family, Bruce, Fury and the rest of the avengers."
"So do you Steve! I won't let you do this."
Steve pressed his forehead to Natasha's. Slowly, his lips inched closer to hers until they were touching.
Natasha melted into the kiss that she knew would be their first and last.
Poor timing was a huge understatement.
When Steve pulled away he frowned. "I wasn't asking your permission."
Steve shoved Natasha and turned around, running for the edge.
Regaining her senses, Natasha shot a widows bite at him and ran to catch up to him.
Steve grabbed her leg and she fell onto the ground right by the edge.
Steve rolled over Natasha and would have fallen off the cliff had Natasha's hand not caught his.
She held on desperately, tears were blurring her vision as she held on to him like he was her life line.
"Don't do this Steve."
"It's okay."
Natasha shook her head. "No it's not, Steve no. Please. I love you."
"Let me go Nat. It'll be ok." He said.
Steve gave Natasha a sad smile, slowly, he pulled himself up just enough so that he could press his lips to hers one last time.
Before she could do anything else. He kicked off the Cliff's walls and let go of her hand.
"No!" Natasha screamed, watching with horror as Steve's body fell.
She looked away when he hit the bottom. She couldn't bear to see that.
Natasha hardly had time to breathe before a blinding flash of blue flew up the side of the cliff and into the sky, seemingly sending her into a dream world of sorts.
In the dream world. Natasha collapsed to the ground and let out a sob. She held her hand up to her face and opened it to find the soul stone inside.
She squeezed her eyes shut again only to open them and find herself in Vormir again. Except now, she was completely alone.
Natasha put on her suit and travelled back to the present, still in complete heartache and pain.
The second she was back, she had collapsed to her knees and thrown the stone across the room as she drew her knees to her chest and allowed her tears to flow freely.
Her fellow avengers looked at her with concern. They didn't have to ask what happened but Tony had to have confirmation.
"Nat? What happened? Where... where's Cap?"
She shook her head. "He's dead. He sacrificed himself. For that." She said, pointing at the glowing stone with hatred.
The room fell silent. No one uttered a word. They had just lost their leader...their captain. He had been a friend to everyone in that room.
It seemed like hours had passed before someone moved.
Surprisingly, it was Natasha who wiped her tears and stormed off towards her room.
"Where are you going Natasha?" Clint asked, catching her arm.
She yanked it free and didn't answer.
She didn't stop until she reached Steve's room.
For a second, she hesitated to go in, but then she figured that he had never minded her barging in when he was alive, so he definitely wouldn't care now that he was dead.
Natasha opened the door slowly, half expecting him to be waiting on the other side of it.
When he wasn't, she continued inside his apartment and slowly looked around.
She went to his kitchen first.
The dishes the two of them had used only yesterday for breakfast were still sitting unwashed in the sink.
A half empty glass of water sat on the counter and to anyone who didn't know, it would appear as though the person living in the apartment was still alive.
Natasha next walked into Steve's bedroom. She had only been inside it a few times but it remained just as neat as it had been the first time.
She opened his closet and pulled a shirt from one of his drawers. It still had a touch of his scent, so she was compelled to put it on as she slid into his bed.
She closed her eyes, and for just a moment, she could imagine that his arms were wrapped around her.
But reality was harsh and left little time for imagination.
As quickly as she was able to pretend he was there with her, the pleasant thoughts of him holding her were replaced with dark images of his contorted body laying in a puddle of blood at the bottom of Vormir.
Natasha sat up quickly and clutched at the pillows around her.
Her eyes filled with tears again and in that moment, she swore to herself that she wouldn't let Steve's sacrifice be in vain.
Hey guys, so this is kind of depressing I guess but I've been thinking about this lately and wanted to try and write it.
Let me know what your thoughts were. Do you think I should have kept Natasha as the one who died or was Steve more interesting and realistic?
I also am considering making a part two of the final battle without Steve there so comment if that's something you'd be interested in.
