I Always Had You

Throughout all of Steve's hardships, he's always had Natasha to comfort him, until he loses her too.

Inspired by an Instagram post on my explore page.

The day Peggy died had been extremely hard for Steve.

It was like the last piece of his past was suddenly just gone, and there was nothing he could do about it.

To make matters worse, he was about to go to war against some of his closest friends.

He felt as though nothing was going right. He felt alone.

The funeral was short, but Steve felt exhausted after it. His emotions had been all over the place the last few days and this had really pushed him to his limits.

After listening to Sharon's speech and sitting through the rest of the funeral, Steve stood in the aisle alone.

He saw a glimpse of red hair and knew who it was.

She didn't need to say anything. She just came besides Steve and listened.

"Before I came out of the ice, I thought everyone from back then was gone. When I found out Peggy was still alive, I was just happy to have her back."

"She had you back too." Natasha said quietly.

Steve paused, looking down. "Who else signed it?"

"Tony, Rhodey, Vision."

"Clint?"

Natasha shrugged. "Says he's retired."

"Wanda?"

Natasha shrugged again. "TBD..."

Steve nodded and Natasha started again, "I'm off to Vienna, for the signing of the accords. There's plenty of room on the jet."

Steve let out a long sigh and Natasha frowned. "Just because it's the path of least resistance doesn't mean it's the wrong one. Staying together is more important then how we stay together." Natasha said nodding, as if she were trying to convince herself as well.

Steve looked up at her sadly. "What are we giving up to do it?"

Natasha didn't answer.

"I'm sorry Nat, I can't sign it."

Natasha nodded. "I know."

"Well then what are you doing here?"

Natasha looked up from the ground and sighed. "I didn't want you to be alone."

Steve's throat began to burn and he looked into Natasha's eyes, hoping his gratitude would show.

She placed a hand on his shoulder and pulled him to her for a hug. "Come here." She whispered, tightly holding him close to her and rubbing his back slowly.

Steve buried his head in her neck and allowed a few more tears to slip from his eyes, knowing Natasha would never judge him for it.

He held her as close as possible, she was his lifeline fight now, and he knew that once they parted it would be a long time before they saw each other again.

Natasha didn't make any notion of moving away and Steve figured it was because she didn't want to leave him alone. But she was going to make her late, and he was already causing her enough trouble as it was.

Steve reluctantly stepped away and wiped the tears from his cheeks. "I really appreciate you coming Nat."

Natasha nodded, giving his hand a faint squeeze. "You would do the same for me. Just promise me one thing...if this ends up as bad as I think it will, don't hate me for not being on your side."

Steve nodded. "Of course. I could never hate you. But you better get going. You'll be late."

Natasha looked down at her watch and sighed. "You're right."

Steve sighed and let go of her hand. They didn't promise to see each other soon, because they had no idea if it was true.

Instead, Natasha just placed a lingering kiss of Steve's cheek and sighed. "Bye Steve, please stay safe."

Steve nodded. "I'll do my best. Bye Nat."

She walked away and Steve went back to his apartment, more grateful then ever for Natasha and her huge heart.

-------------

After the civil war. Steve once again felt like he had lost everything.

Tony hated him, Bucky was in Wakanda, Vision and Wanda were in god knows where....

He was at one of the lowest points in his life until a certain women came to his aid again.

He hadn't recognized her at first. The short blonde hair had thrown him off. But as soon as she spoke, he knew it was her.

Sam had been out getting coffee while Steve had been cleaning a wound he had received from some agents a few days ago.

The voice from behind had startled him at first.

"You know, when I told you to stay safe...this is not what I meant." She teased.

Steve whipped around in his seat and stood up.

"Nat?"

She grinned. "Hey Steve."

Steve had practically tackled her into a bone crushing hug. "What are you doing here? What about Tony and the rest of the team?"

"Well, when T'challa snitched on me for helping you guys out, some of the government agents threw me in a holding cell because they thought I was a spy for you. I escaped and found you two."

"I was worried about you. Thank you again. For letting us go."

"Don't worry about it."

Steve sighed again. "So what now?"

"Now we stay together."

Steve slightly smiled. That was the best thing he had heard in a long time.

-------------

The snap had brought pain for everyone.

Half the population, gone in an instant. Just dissolved into nothing but a pile of dust.

After years of fighting to keep Bucky alive and as himself, Steve lost him all over again.

It had happened right before his very eyes too. He watched as Bucky stepped towards him, and then just became one with the wind.

He had been in shock, pain, and  distress.

A million thoughts ran through his head and he couldn't help but wonder who else was gone.

Was Natasha? Thor? Sam? Steve didn't know. All he knew is that they had lost.

He had desperately stumbled to find someone. Anyone. He found Visions grey body and sighed. Behind him he heard soft footsteps and then he heard her voice. "Oh my god." She mumbled.

"We lost." Steve mumbled.

Natasha crouched down besides Steve and grabbed his hand. Trying to reassure them both that they still had each other.

They went home that night in silence. It seemed like they had been holding hands all day, but neither of them cared.

Holding Natasha's hand made Steve feel like she couldn't leave. Like he could protect her and make sure that she too wouldn't disappear.

"Steve. What do we do now?"

Steve shrugged. "I don't know. We have to do something."

"We should leave Wakanda soon, and go back to the facility. Maybe we can try and start a program to see who was dusted in the snap." She suggested sadly.

"Okay. What do we do until then?"

Natasha sighed. "Try and get some sleep."

Steve let out a dry chuckle. "Yeah right. Why do I get the feeling that won't happen."

"Because it probably won't. But that doesn't mean we can't try. Come here..." Natasha said, patting the spot besides her on the couch.

"Who was it?" She whispered when he sat beside her.

"Bucky."

"I'm sorry."

Steve nodded, not having the strength to reply.

Natasha put her arms around Steve and for a long time, they just stayed like that. Completely embraced in each other's arms arms. Feeling safer and less alone.

That night they didn't get any sleep. Too many visions of their remaining loved ones turning to dust filled their dreams.

Instead, they sat on Steve's bed together, just holding hands and knowing that the other was there.

-----------------

He wasn't prepared.

Before Clint came back, there wasn't even a thought in his mind about Natasha not making it back with him.

He was worried of course, he was always worried about Natasha, but he had always thought that she was someone who could survive just about anything.

It turned out he was wrong.

He was the first of the other avengers to notice her missing.

"Natasha?" He whispered.

Clint let out a sob and fell to the ground.

Around him, Steve could feel the air around him thinning. His heart felt as though someone was squeezing it. His vision became blurry and the painful lump in his throat once again made it's presence.

People around him started talking, but he couldn't hear them.

He just stared at the place that she was supposed to be standing at.

"See you in a minute." She had promised him.

He dropped everything that he was holding and continued to just stand there.

He didn't blink, he didn't move. He just watched. Waiting for her to come back and apologize for being late.

She couldn't really be gone. Not when Steve needed her most.

Steve felt a hand on his shoulder and he ignored it.

"Cap..." Tony said.

Steve continued staring.

"Steve!" He added, using his hand to turn Steve towards him.

Steve's eyes were glossed over and his skin was pale.

Tony looked at him with deep concern and started to say something, but before he could, Steve walked away.

He went back upstairs. To his and Natasha's floor.

He walked inside Natasha's room and grabbed onto her couch for support.

Everything was dizzy and he felt more heard broken then he had ever been.

"Nat?" He called into the room before falling to his knees.

"You promised you'd be back in a minute." He whispered, tears streaming down his cheeks.

He waited, waited for her to come to his side and say she didn't want him to be alone. To say this isn't what she had meant when she told him to stay safe. To say to try and get some sleep.

He waited.

But she never came.

He didn't know how to deal with her loss. Normally Natasha was the one who soothed him after a loss like this.

She was always there for him in ways that no one else could be.

Losing her was like losing a part of himself.

They had spent so much time together. She held his heart in her hands.

She just didn't know it. Steve resented himself for that more then anything in the world.

He didn't move from his spot on the floor for a while, and when he did. He made his way towards her room.

He laid down on the side of the bed he knew she didn't sleep on and hugged her pillow close to his chest. Trying to tell if her scent was still on it.

During the five years after the snap, they had spent a lot of nights staying up and talking in his or her bed.

It was how they dealt with all the problems they had.

Now all he wanted to do was talk to her one more time.

But he couldn't, because she was gone. She was gone.

Throughout all Steve's losses, he had her. So he wasn't prepared to lose her too.

So, I hope y'all enjoyed this. Like I said earlier. It was inspired by an Instagram post I saw, which is at the top.

A part 2 of the last chapter will probably be my next update. If not, it will be soon.
