Horrific

Requested by steverogerbarnes, based on the article where in one version of endgame, Thanos brought a decapitated Steve to the present to prove he could defeat them.

In this, no one died in Vormir. Simply bc I decided that doesn't happen.

Everything happened in a second. Natasha had been so relieved. They had done it. Laura was calling Clint. Everything was going to be alright.

Until Thanos decided to crash the party again.

Literally crash it.

He had turned the compound into a pile of rumble and they had all been lucky to survive the blast.

When Natasha was able to climb out from underneath the debris, she was relieved to see Steve doing the same.

"Steve, are you okay? What the hell was that?" She asked, hurrying over to him and helping him stand up, her hand going to his face as an instinct.

Over the five years after the snap, something had developed between them.

She wasn't sure what it was but she knew that she was just about head over heels in love with him.

Steve shook his head, "I don't know. Where is everyone else?"

"I don't know. You were the first person I saw."

"Cap! Romanoff!" They heard someone tell from behind some rumble.

Steve lifted the debris out of their way and they found Tony and Thor standing on what was left of the back porch.

"You've gotta be kidding me," Steve said, seeing Thanos' ship land.

"How is this possible?" Natasha asked.

Steve picked up his shield and sighed, "Let's go find out."

They all nodded and walked down to where Thanos was departing his ship.

Thor threw his hammer at Thanos but it was hit down instantly.

"You people never learn. You can't beat me. You've tried before and failed." Thanos said, sitting down on a big rock.

Natasha raised her gun, "What makes you think we'll fail again?"

Thanks chuckled, "I came prepared. I visited alternate realities where you all fought me. I won, and you all perished. One by one I killed you all. And I'll do it again."

Steve gritted his teeth, "Why should we believe you. Even if we did, that won't stop us from trying again."

Standing up, Thanos grinned, "I'm so glad you asked Captain. Because I happen to have proof that will be particularly convincing for you."

Natasha's breath hitched in her throat as Thanos tossed something at their feet.

Her face paled as she realized that it was a head. Steve's head to be precise, no longer attached to his body.

His dead grey eyes seemed to be staring into her soul and she could hardly breath.

Besides her, she could feel Steve tense up as the blood rushed from her face.

"You think that'll stop us?" Steve asked.

"If it doesn't, then that's what your fate will be."

Steve shook his head and threw his shield at Thanos as hard as he could, "I don't care."

Natasha forced herself to join the fight despite the immense fear she had for Steve. If she lost him, she didn't know what you would do.

Tony and Thor joined them in fighting and soon, all four were surrounding Thanos, trying to take him down as his minions tried to get the gauntlet.

Before Natasha could process it, there was more aliens and her attention was being diverted away from Thanos.

Steve and Thor continued to fight him while Natasha and Tony stopped the minions from interfering.

"Clint! We need to get that gauntlet out of here." Tony said through the comms.

"I'm trying! These damn temple run things are chasing me all over the place though." Clint replied.

"Just keep it away from Thanos. If he gets the stones back this is all for nothing," Natasha said, glancing over her shoulder to make sure nothing had happened.

Normally she wouldn't have been so worried, but seeing Steve's decapitated head was enough to make her more worried then she had ever been. She wanted to throw up when she saw it.

She was still fighting when she saw Steve lift Mjolnir out of the corner of her eyes.

That gave her a little bit more hope, maybe that hadn't happened in the reality where he was killed.

But then everything went south. She was being hit more times then a normal human could take and she was pretty sure she had three or four gun shot wounds that had luckily missed major arteries.

She was still fighting when she looked up and saw Steve now facing Thanks alone, his shield half chipped away and his face covered with blood and dirt. Looking far to similar to what Thanos had presented them earlier.

Killing the alien she was fighting, Natasha began sprinting towards Steve and Thanos. Only to watch as Thanos swatted Steve backwards.

She ran to him and held out her hand, "Come on Steve. We can't stop."

Steve grimaced in pain but pulled himself to his feet, holding out his broken shield as Natasha aimed her gun at the massive army in front of them.

Tony and Thor were no where to be seen. Natasha assumed they were helping Clint but right now they needed help.

"Steve we can't do this alone," Natasha whispered, her hands trembling slightly.

Before Steve could respond, there was static through the comms before Sam's voice ran through, "Don't worry, you don't have to. I'm on your left."

Steve turned to his left and watched as portals opened and everyone who had died in the snap arrived.

Natasha smiled, her hopes renewed when they all charges into battle.

As the battle went on, they gained the upper hand, and eventually, it led to a victory.

No one had died, and Natasha was more then relieved.

As soon as the mess was all over, she had practically ran into Steve's arms, crashing her lips against his in utter relief that he hadn't been killed.

"We did it Nat. We won," He said, hugging her tightly.

Natasha sighed in relief, shutting her eyes and refusing to let him go.

That night, they all had to find other places to stay. Natasha went back to Steve to his apartment and was glad to have left some of her clothes there the last time she had spent the night.

"How's your arm?" She asked softly, holding Steve's arm tentatively and looking at the bandaged cut.

"It's alright. Just a little sore."

Natasha sighed and sat down on the bed, braiding her hair quietly.

"Are you alright?" Steve asked quietly, sitting besides her.

Natasha nodded.

Steve frowned, "You've been acting odd. What's going on Nat?"

Natasha sighed, "Steve he threw your head at our feet."

Steve's eyes softened, understanding why she had been so worried today, "Nat..."

Natasha shook her head, "Steve I was so afraid I was going to lose you. I didn't think I was ever going to be able to tell you how I really feel or kiss you again."

Steve frowned and rested his head against Natasha's, "I'm alright Nat. He lost."

Natasha nodded, "I know. But it was still terrifying. I almost didn't get the chance to tell you I love you."

Steve's eyes widened, "You love me?"

"I wouldn't say I did if I didn't."

Steve smiled softly, "I love you too Nat."

Natasha smiled but was quickly pulled up to Steve for a seering kiss, making her skin tingle.

Eventually, they pulled away and went to sleep. It had been a long day and they both needed to sleep for days.

Natasha slept well at first, feeling safe in Steve's embrace, but then the nightmares came.

These were new ones.

Ones of Steve laying dead in front of her. The battle from today ending in a much more horific way.

She woke up with a start, his hands trembling and her skin pale and sweaty.

Steve was apparently woken by her sudden movement so he too woke up, "Natasha?" He asked quietly.

She didn't respond, only moving closer to him in response to his concern, her arms wrapping around his neck.

"Nightmare?" He asked quietly.

Natasha nodded, "Yeah. I can't close my eyes without seeing you dead."

Steve sighed and placed his hand on her cheek, "I'm right here Natasha, and I don't plan on going anywhere for a while."

Natasha nodded again, resting her head on his chest, "I love you." She whispered.

Steve pressed a chaste kiss to her cheek, "I love you too."
