Happier with Her Part 2
Highly requested part two, I've changed a lot of things up from the movie so bare with me.
Natasha approached Steve and gently put her hand on his shoulder. "You ready to go?" She asked quietly.
After their failed attempt at reversing the snap five years ago, they might have finally figured out a new way to do it.
Time travel. Of all things.
Natasha wasn't really into science fiction or anything like that but she did know that time travel always seemed to mess things up.
She just hoped it went alright for them.
All she wanted was to go back, get the stones, come home and undo the snap.
Then everything would be fine again.
Steve glanced up at her and nodded slightly. "Yeah, I'm ready. Are you?"
Natasha shrugged. "As ready as I'll ever be."
Steve turned around to face her and sighed. "I hope this works." He mumbled quietly.
"It will. It has to. We'll do whatever it takes."
Steve nodded. "Whatever it takes..." He whispered more to himself then to Natasha.
They walked into the conference room together and Steve looked at Natasha before starting to go over the plan.
"Bruce. You're getting the time stone. We've got a location in New York pinpointed on your suit. Rhodey and Nebula, you're after the power stone. Thor, you and Rocket are going for the space stone. Clint and Scott, you're going to Vormir for the soul stone. Tony, Nat, and I will handle the two others in New York." He paused looking around the room again.
"This mission is huge. If we fail, there's no second chance. Get the stones, and get back here. The sooner we do that, the sooner we can bring everyone back. Any questions?"
No one spoke so Steve left the room to head to the transporter, followed by the team.
No one spoke, not even Clint and Tony, who always seemed to have some witty remark.
Once everyone was ready and the mission was clear they stood in a circle to get ready to go back.
Natasha gave Steve a nervous smile. "See you in a sec."
Steve forced a smile back and they all put their hands together before going quantum.
When Natasha could stand again, she was in 2012 New York with Tony and Steve.
"What's the plan Cap?" Tony asked Steve.
Steve looked around at the destroyed city and sighed. "At this point the avengers have both stones. We need to get in the tower and take them. Tony, can you handle getting the space stone?"
Tony nodded. "Easy peasy Cap. I'll just disguise myself and send past me into cardiac arrest, then grab the stone." He said after thinking it over for a minute.
Steve looked to Natasha. "Great, then you and me have the mind stone. I know where it is, now all we have to do is get it from the Hydra agents."
Natasha shurgged and smirked. "Well then we better get going."
Steve nodded and they separated from Tony.
Running towards the tower, Natasha looked over at Steve beside her. "What's the plan?"
"Still working on that."
Natasha raised an eyebrow and tilted her head with a quick sigh. "Might need to figure that out pretty soon."
"Alright, I might have something. The Hydra agents should be getting the stone right about now. We get on the elevator with them and if they don't hand it over then we fight them."
Natasha nodded. "We better hurry then."
They ran up to the top floor and waited by the elevator for the Hydra agents to walk into the elevator.
Steve caught sight of them and just as the doors were about to close, he put his hand between the door. "Sorry, got room for two more?" He asked, stepping into the elevator.
Rumlow furrowed his eyebrows. "Agent Romanoff, Captain. Thought you guys were dealing with Loki."
Natasha shrugged. "Fury sent us to get the scepter. Says he needs to run one more test before he hands it over to you. May I?" She asked, holding out her hand.
Rumlow looked sceptical. Steve and Natasha could both see the others place a hand on their weapons.
Steve swallowed the lump in his throat and leaned close to Rumlow's ear. "Hail Hydra." He whispered.
Rumlow relaxed, still looking confused but slowly handed the case over to Natasha, who smiled sarcastically and exited the elevator at the next stop with Steve.
She laughed as soon as they got out of the elevator. "I'll give you props for that one. But now Hydra thinks we are part of it." She said with a grin.
Steve smirked. "Well I wasn't in the mood for a fight."
Natasha grabbed Steve and pulled him back, cursing. "Well we might not have a choice." She mumbled, motioning ahead.
Steve looked ahead and sighed. "Shit."
Sure enough, their counterparts from 2012 were headed straight towards them.
Natasha quickly pushed Steve against one of the walls and out of sight from their past selves.
"Nat what do we do?" Steve asked.
Natasha shook her head. "Try not to be seen I guess."
Steve shook his head. "I don't think that's gonna work. They're headed right for us."
"Shit." Natasha mumbled.
"I've got eyes on Loki." Past Steve said into his com. Natasha following in his footsteps.
"Loki, hand over the sceptor." Steve said.
Current Steve rolled his eyes. "I'm not Loki."
Past Natasha rolled her eyes. "If you're not Loki then who are you. Because as far as I know, there's only one me and one Steve." She said sarcastically.
Natasha sighed and threw the first punch at her last self.
Steve followed suit and a battle broke out between them.
Natasha struggled against her past self, while Steve fought against himself.
Natasha kicked her counterpart off of her and used her thighs to put her in a chokehold, which she was able to escape from.
Meanwhile Steve's past self tackled Steve, sending them both off the small bridge and down a few floors.
"I'm not Loki. I'm you from the future." Natasha tried to explain again.
"Prove it." He past self said, not believing her and still fighting.
Natasha sighed. "I know you're in love with Steve."
Her past self paused in shock and Natasha took the second of hesitation to slam her head into a metal rod, knocking her unconscious.
She sighed. "That's gonna leave a bruise." She mumbled before hopping off the bridge to where Steve had fallen.
She scooped up the scepters case and helped Steve up.
"You alright?"
Steve nodded, slightly out of breath. "Yeah. You?"
Natasha nodded. "Let's go find Tony and get out of here."
Steve nodded and they ran down to where Tony was.
"Tony, status?" Steve asked through the com.
"Err. Not great. Loki got away with the stone." Tony's voice said.
Natasha looked at Steve with wide eyes and he sighed, looking down.
That was their one shot. They didn't have enough particles to go find the stone and get back.
Steve looked up quickly and started running faster while Natasha tried to catch up, confused.
"I've got an idea, just meet us where we started." Steve said through his earpiece.
Natasha caught up to Steve and looked over at him while running. "What's the plan?"
"I'll explain in a minute." He said.
They got to where Tony was and Steve sighed. "I've got a plan, but it's crazy, and it might not work."
Natasha looked up at him with hope in her eyes. "But it could work?"
Steve nodded. "If we use our last pin particles to go back to right after I got stuck in the ice, the stone should be there..."
Tony interrupted. "And more pim particles." He said, his eyes lighting up.
Natasha nodded, "We can get the stone and still make it home. Genius." She mumbled quietly.
Steve nodded. "Excactly. But if we don't get the particles then we lose. No stone, and we'll be stuck there." He warned.
"We'll get them. Plus it's not like we have much of a choice right? Whatever it takes." Natasha said, standing up.
"Then let's go." Tony said.
He quickly did some math and figured out the coordinates before reading them out to Natasha and Steve who locked theirs in as well.
After one last glance at her teammates, they went back again.
This time they appeared right outside the military base where shield had set up.
"Any idea where our stone and particles are?"
Steve nodded. "The tesseract will be in the weaponry room. The particles should be in Hank Pim's office. If we want to get in there unnoticed we all need disguises."
Natasha nodded in agreement.
"I'll go get the stone. It should be easy enough. You two get the particles. If you get caught play dumb. I'll meet you back here." Tony said.
Steve and Natasha nodded and Tony separated from them.
Sneaking into one of the military changing rooms, Steve discreetly grabbed a uniform, hoping it would fit well enough.
Natasha did the same and met him again in the hallway after changing.
She smirked at him and held back a laugh.
The uniform he had snatched fit, but the shirt was incredibly tight and he had to roll it up because the sleeves were so small.
"Looks like you need a bigger uniform Cap." She teased.
Steve rolled his eyes. "This was the easiest one to grab."
Natasha smirked but kept walking. "You know where you're going?"
Steve nodded. "His office is close by, we just have to get in without being seen."
Natasha nodded and they walked a little faster.
For a second she thought they might make it all the way without being seen but just as they came upon the lab and office, two agents started walking towards them.
Steve's eyes widened and he pushed Natasha against a wall, pressing his lips to hers.
Natasha's eyes widened in shock but she quickly responded to the kiss, not caring why he did it.
When Steve pulled away she looked up into his eyes with confusion.
Her breaths were unsteady and her cheeks were flushed.
"Public displays of affection make people uncomfortable." He said, motioning to the agents who had just walked by.
Natasha's heart sank slightly but she couldn't help but remember their last kiss fondly at his words.
She faked a smile and raised an eyebrow. "I guess you have learned a few things from me."
Steve smiled and broke the lock on Hank's office door, entering the dark room.
Natasha followed quietly and Steve led her to a large display of the particles.
She smiled, "Bingo." She whispered, taking a handful.
Steve did the same and they started to walk towards the door when they heard keys jiggling on the other side.
Natasha quickly pushed Steve into the closest door and held her breath.
It happened to be another office that was adjacent to Hank's.
They stayed silent for a minute, waiting until they thought it would be safe to leave.
Natasha started to walk towards the door when she saw Steve standing still over a desk.
"Steve?"
She walked over to where he was standing and looked down. There was a picture of him, she assumed it was from before his serum.
Looking around the desk, Natasha saw the name of who it belonged too and understood why Steve was frozen.
Peggy Carter.
Natasha gently placed her hand on his arm. "Come on Steve. We have to go."
Steve turned away slowly and followed her, a sad and longing look in his eyes.
Natasha's heart ached for him and she couldn't help but wish that they hadn't gone into that room.
They made it out to where Tony said they would meet and waited behind a rock.
Natasha looked up at Steve hesitantly and noticed he was staring at something in the distance.
She followed his eyes and saw Peggy talking with someone.
Natasha put her hand on his shoulder and frowned. "You okay?" She asked quietly.
Steve nodded. "That's the man she married."
Natasha looked over again and saw Peggy throw her head back in laughter.
Steve smiled sadly. "She looks happy."
Natasha nodded and was about to say something when Tony ran up to them.
"I've got the stone. Let's get out of here."
Steve looked away from Peggy and nodded, handing Tony more particles.
They pressed a button and appeared back with the other avengers.
Everyone made it back with their stones so Tony started working on a way to reverse the snap.
Time passed and they defeated Thanos.
Steve was assigned the task of returning all the stones and Natasha couldn't help but worry.
They both knew that if he wanted, he could stay in the past with Peggy.
Steve wasn't stupid. He knew it was an option.
As he was getting ready to go, Natasha knocked on his door softly.
He opened it and welcomed Natasha in with a smile.
"Hey." She said quietly.
"What's wrong?" Steve asked instantly, noticing her timidness.
Natasha looked up at Steve and gave him a small smile. "Nothing, I just...before you leave I need you to know something."
Steve nodded. "Okay."
"I know you're thinking about staying with Peggy in that past. I've seen how often you look at her compass and I know you still love her. And if that's really what you want to do, then I won't stop you or ask you not too. Just know that if you do come back, I'll be waiting for you."
Steve's eyes softened and he grabbed Natasha's hand.
She leaned her head against his and closed her eyes. "I love you Steve."
She planted a small kiss on the corner of his lips and pulled away, putting her finger over his lips.
"Don't say anything. Just do what you need to do." She said with a sad smile.
With that, she walked out of the room and to where the transporter was.
As Steve started to leave, she stood in the background, not wanting him to see her. She wanted him to make the choice for himself. Not because he felt guilty.
Bruce sent Steve back and Natasha felt her heart beat speed up as he counted down for his return.
"Returning in three...two...one." he said, pressing another button.
A large flash came from the transporter and Steve stood in the excact spot he disappeared, this time only holding his shield.
Natasha's eyes welled up with tears and she stood silently. Waiting for a moment alone with Steve.
Steve made eye contact with her and smiled, pushing past Bruce and the others to go to her.
"Hey." He said, smiling and setting his shield on the ground.
She smiled and ran towards him, crushing her lips into his with all the passion she could muster.
Steve kissed her back and ran his fingers through her red locks.
"Why'd you come back?" Natasha asked quietly after pulling away.
"I love you Nat. I think I have for a while. I just was too ignorant to see it, and I was scared that if I admitted my real feelings, you wouldn't feel the same."
Natasha shook her head, smiling.
"You're the biggest dumbass I've ever met. But I love you too." She said, laughing and kissing him again.
As it turns out, she was wrong. Peggy might have been his first love, but she was his soulmate.
His partner in crime, his best friend, and his rock.
He was much happier with her.
