Forgotten Lovers Hurt the Most
Requested by RomanogersFanfics where Natasha is brought back from the snap but she doesn't know who Steve is.
"Natasha?" Clint asked, causing Steve to turn around so fast he nearly tripped.
"Clint? How am I back? What happened?" Natasha asked, standing up and running to embrace Clint.
Tony helped Bruce while Steve stood in awe.
"Nat?" He asked quietly.
Natasha looked at him, her eyebrows furrowing. "Hi?" She said, not leaving Clint's side.
Steve's face fell but he tried not to show it. "Are you okay?" He asked, stepping towards Natasha.
Natasha stepped back. "I'm fine."
Clint looked between Natasha and Steve with a confused frown. He would have thought Steve would be the first person Natasha reunited with but she was acting as though she didn't even know him.
Steve looked at Clint with a hurt look and Clint glanced at Natasha, who hadn't moved towards Steve at all.
"Nat what are you doing?" Clint asked, standing besides her again.
"What do you mean?" She asked.
Steve interupted, "Did I do something?" He asked, sounding more hurt then Clint had ever heard him.
Natasha's eyes narrowed and she looked at Clint. "I don't even know you, how could you have done something wrong?"
Clint's eyes widened and Steve's heard dropped in his chest.
"You don't know me?" Steve asked quietly.
Natasha shook her head slowly. "No...should I?"
Clint sighed. "Nat it's Steve. Captain America." He said, wondering what the hell was going on.
Natasha looked at Clint, her eyes wide and confused. "I don't know a Steve or a Captain America. Clint what are you talking about?"
Before Clint could answer, Steve was walking away quickly, towards Bruce and Tony.
"She doesn't know who I am Tony, what happened. Why doesn't she remember me?" He asked desperately, tears forming in the back of his throat.
Tony's eyes widened. "She doesn't remember you?"
"No. She looks at me like I'm a stranger."
"Oh no." Bruce said from the medical table he was sitting on, fixing his arm.
Tony and Steve both looked at Bruce. "What?"
Bruce sighed. "When I snapped, I wished Natasha would come back...but I also wished that we could be together without any boundaries."
Steve stepped back, his eyes narrowing. "What?"
Tony sighed and rubbed his forehead.
"I didn't think that would mean you Cap. I just meant that she wouldn't resent me for leaving that one time anymore." Bruce said, apologizing.
"Bruce why? I thought you moved on." Tony asked.
"Well I haven't. How could I?"
Steve shook his head, walking out of the room, anger and confusion making his head pound.
As he walked towards the lake, Steve watched Clint and Natasha begin talking to Bruce and Tony. Clearly she remembered them just fine.
Steve took a pebble from the ground and threw it into the water, letting his grief take over as he sank down to his knees.
Natasha was back. She was alive and kicking but she had no idea who Steve was.
All the things he regretted not telling her were still bubbling inside of him and telling her now was impossible. It would mean nothing to her.
Steve sat on the docks for hours. Hating Thanos. Regretting not telling Natasha he loved her years ago. Wishing Bruce hadn't snapped Steve out of Natasha's memory.
He was hurt.
Eventually he heard soft footsteps on the dock that he knew all too well.
Natasha stood behind him, quietly looking at the sunset for a moment. "Mind if I sit down?" She asked quietly.
Steve shook his head and Natasha sat down beside him.
"I um. I'm sorry I don't remember you. Tony and Clint. They showed me pictures and videos..."
Steve looked down. "It's not your fault."
"I guess that blame falls on Bruce. Tony told me what they think happened and if what he said is true then it sounds like you and I were pretty close."
Steve nodded, still not gaining the strength to look Natasha in the eyes. He didn't want her to look at him like a stranger. "We we're mission partners at first. Then friends, I considered you my best friend but I think Clint still holds that title for you..." Steve said, holding back a little.
"Is that all?" Natasha asked quietly.
"I loved you. But I don't know if you felt the same or not." He admitted.
Natasha gave Steve a sad smile. "Well, I don't know for sure but if I had to guess based on what Tony and Clint showed me and on what Bruce said... I would be surprised if I didn't feel the same."
Steve nodded slowly. "I don't know if that helps or makes it worse." He joked, forcing a laugh.
Natasha frowned. "I'm sorry. I know how hard it must be. I wish I could remember you. It feels like half of my past is missing."
"Gee, Nat. I didn't even think about what this must be like for you. I'm sorry you have to deal with this." Steve said, shaking his head and hating himself for not considering her feelings earlier.
Natasha shook her head. "Don't be sorry. At least everyone I love remembers me. This....it's just I'm trying to remember a dream I had years ago. I believe that it happened but the only memories I have of you are foggy."
"Did the pictures and videos help?" Steve asked.
Natasha shrugged. "I guess so. It's hard to tell, but Tony said he thinks he can help get them back."
Steve finally looked up at Natasha. "How does Bruce feel about that?" He asked, slightly bitter.
Natasha sighed. "I didn't ask."
"Are you two not a thing again?" Steve asked, confusion lacing his features.
Natasha forced a laugh. "No. I don't think I ever want to even be alone with him again. The only barrier in our relationship was how much he hated himself. Blaming you for us never getting back together is ridiculous."
Steve sighed. "As much as I hate what happened, I don't know that I would have done anything different. I'd do just about anything for you at this point."
Natasha sighed. "I know I hardly know you anymore but I don't think you would have. From what I've seen, you are a pretty selfless person."
Steve was about to respond when Clint came running down the docks. "Nat we think we can get your memories back to normal."
Both Natasha and Steve jumped up. "Really?"
Clint nodded and led them inside.
Tony had a small machine built that looked complicated.
"What is this?"
"It's basically a mind reader. If you and Steve are both attached to it, it will fill in the missing memories of him with his memories with you. Everything else should just fall into place." Tony explained, dumbing it down and leaving out the science details.
Natasha and Steve both sat down. "Let's do it then."
Tony started the machine and they waited a few moments before it powered down on its own and the two stepped out.
"Nat?" Steve asked cautiously
Natasha quickly ran to Steve and embraced him, wrapping her arms around Steve tightly and burrying her head in his neck.
Steve hugged her back and sighed in relief.
"I take it the machine worked?" Clint joked, smiling.
Natasha smiled. "Yeah, it did. Now if you two don't mind I need a minute with Steve."
Tony and Clint grumbled, but left the room.
As soon as the door was shut, Natasha grabbed Steve's chin and brought his down to her lips. Kissing him with as much passion as she could muster.
Steve moaned in surprise but quickly kissed her back.
"I love you Steve." She whispered, pulling apart.
Steve sighed and kissed Natasha again, wanting to make up for lost time.
"I love you too Nat. Please don't ever leave me again."
Natasha sighed in contentment. "I won't. You're stuck with me."
Steve smiled. "I wouldn't have it any other way."
