Forgetting Something?
Requested by ImLilMissComplicated, Steve forgets stuff all the time because he can't stop thinking about Natasha...please note that this wasn't the exact request but I don't want to give anything away. Full request be at the bottom.
Steve had always prided himself on being over-prepared for everything. It was a habit he had developed well before becoming Captain America.
It had come into handy while working at Shield and he had never found it anything but helpful when something went wrong.
But lately, he had found himself forgetting the most obvious of things.
He suspected that it probably had something to do with his overwhelming crush on his red headed teammate.
Natasha had taken over all of his thoughts during the recent months and frankly, he couldn't take her mind off her.
It had made him forget things that he didn't even have to think twice about before...and of course, Natasha had been the one noticing his sudden forgetfulness.
She had first noticed when he had nearly gone to Tony's party with his shirt only buttoned halfway up.
He had already been running late when he had happened to catch her in the elevator.
She had given him a smirk as he walked in which had both confused him and made his heart beat speed up as he stepped in besides her.
She looked at him with one raised eyebrow and stepped towards him, gesturing to his chest, "You becoming forgetful in your old age or did you just decide to give the ladies a treat tonight?"
Steve looked down to where she was pointed and noticed that at only the bottom three buttons had been done on his shirt. He instantly felt his cheeks go red, "Oh um, I guess I forgot to finish that..."
She laughed and raised her hands to button the remaining buttons. Steve could feel his heart pounding in his rib cage and he could only hope that she couldn't tell how flustered she made him.
"There," She said, leaving the top two undone still before straightening out his collar with a genuine smile, "I think I just saved you from hours of ridicule from Stark."
Steve managed a laugh, rubbing his neck and trying to stop the stupid blush that just wouldn't go away, "You're probably right. Thank you."
Natasha nodded and the elevator arrived at the main floor. The doors opened and she began to walk away from him before turning back with a smirk, "Don't forget to get out of the elevator Steve. We're already late."
He shook his head with a small laugh and followed behind her into the party.
--------------------------
The next time Steve had made a fool out of himself in front of her was late one night in the tower when he had gotten the sudden craving for a cup of tea. It was one of the few things that helped him sleep and lately, his thoughts had been so preoccupied with Natasha that he didn't get much sleep.
He hadn't expected anyone to be awake when he got to the kitchen but to his surprise, Natasha had been sitting quietly at the counter with a bowl of noodles and a book in her hand.
"Oh," He said, slightly startled when he noticed her and suddenly very aware that he was wearing the Captain America themed bottoms Tony had gifted him, "Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt you. I thought I was the only one up."
Natasha looked up at him and shook her head, "You don't have to apologize Steve, we're in the shared kitchen, you're allowed to come whenever you want."
Steve was thankful that it was dark because hopefully now she couldn't see his blush, "Right."
Natasha raised an eyebrow at him, "Are those Captain America pajamas?"
Sighing, Steve nodded, "Um, yeah. Tony gave them to me last Christmas. Like I said, I didn't expect anyone else to be up."
Natasha smirked, "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone...speaking of though, why are you up? Did you come down here for something or do you just like to wonder the tower at night?" She asked with a teasing grin.
Steve suddenly remembered why he had gone down to the kitchen and blushed again, "Oh right, I came to make myself some tea."
Natasha grinned, "You know Cap, I'm starting to think you need some memory supplements. Clearly your age if effecting your memory."
Steve rolled his eyes, "I've just been distracted lately."
"Yeah? What is it? Did a girl finally catch your eye?" Natasha asked, standing up and coming around the counter to better hear him.
Steve sighed, if only she knew, "I don't know yet."
Natasha grinned and suddenly Steve was aware of how gorgeous she looked in her shorts and tank top, her natural waves loosely framing her face, "So it is a girl?" She asked.
"I don't know Nat," Steve said, desperately trying to change the subject.
"Alright, I'll stop asking but I expect to be the first one to know if you build up the courage to ask her out."
Steve almost laughed. If he did that, she would certainly be the first one to know. He took his tea out of the microwave and went to take a sip when he was met by the taste of boiling water. He frowned and looked down at the cup only to see that he had forgotten to put the tea bag inside.
Natasha shook her head with a quiet laugh and stepped forward.
"Goodnight Steve. Try not to forget anything else tonight," She teased, pressing a faint kiss on his cheek before walking to the elevator.
Steve sighed and shook his head as she walked away...she was going to be the death of him.
------------------------------
Several weeks had passed and Steve was still struggling to keep his mind from falling apart. He had been forgetting things left and right this week, and of course, Natasha had witnessed nearly all of it.
She had been right there when he forgot to tie his shoes before a run and had fallen before even getting out of the tower. She had been the first to see him the morning that he had left his floor with his shirt inside out. And worst of all, she had been the one to come help him when he had left him phone, wallet, and keys inside his floor the day that Tony had taken Jarvis offline for maintenance.
It was pretty safe to say that Steve was quite literally losing his mind over Natasha.
He had been hesitant to accept a mission from Fury because of his recent distraction, but ultimately decided that it would be wildly unprofessional to reject it just so that he could have more time to wallow in his thoughts about her.
The day he was leaving however, had been a mess. He had gone over his checklist a thousand times and still felt like he was forgetting something.
He had his suit, his files, his phone...what else did he need? His wallet? He had that.
Steve had been pacing around his floor trying to figure out what it was he was forgetting when Natasha had knocked on his door.
"Hey," She said, when he opened the door, stepping into his floor and taking a seat on his couch as if she lived there, "I heard you were leaving today and came to say goodbye."
Steve blushed slightly as he sat besides her, "I thought you were coming too?"
Natasha shook her head, "No, Fury needs me to do an undercover op later this week so he's sending Clint in my place."
Steve tried to hide his disappointment as he nodded, "I guess I'll see you when we both get back then?"
Natasha nodded, smiling subtly, "Guess you will."
Steve stood up and grabbed his bag, "I should probably get going. We're supposed to be leaving soon."
Natasha raised an eyebrow, "Aren't you forgetting something?"
Steve frowned. He didn't think so. He had everything he needed for the mission. He had gone over his list a thousand times.
Natasha bit her lip and Steve's heart began to race...surely she didn't mean she wanted to kiss him...right?
Deciding that he was tired of waiting around, Steve leaned forward and captured Natasha's lips with his own, pulling her closer to him as his hand rested on the small of her back.
She seemed surprised for a second but was quickly responding to the kiss with twice as much passion.
When they finally pulled away, Steve couldn't help the boyish grin on his face. Natasha laughed, her lips perfectly swollen in a way that made his heart pound.
"While I'm certainly not complaining-" Natasha started, her arms still wrapped around Steve's neck. She tilted her head towards the wall drawing his attention to what was leaning up against it, "-I meant your shield."
Steve blushed and cleared his throat, "Right. My shield."
Natasha grinned and leaned up to kiss him slowly, "Don't sound so dejected Steve. If you weren't about to leave for a mission, I'd be more then happy to do something you wouldn't forget but since duty calls, I guess we'll just have to postpone that."
"Nat..." Steve started, not sure how to tell her how he really felt. She stopped him, placing her hand on his shoulder with a reassuring smile.
"I know Steve. You don't have to tell me. We can talk when you get back okay? You're already running late," She said with a smile.
Steve nodded and grabbed his shield from where it was laying against the wall, "We'll talk when I get back?"
Natasha nodded, pushing him gently towards the door, "Hopefully we'll do more then talking, but yeah. We'll talk when we're both back."
Steve smiled and got into the elevator next to her. It arrived at her floor and she gave him a light peck on his lips before walking out of the elevator.
She turned back to him with a grin, "Hey Steve...don't forget about that kiss okay?"
Steve shook his head with a small laugh as the doors closed.
He couldn't if he tried.
Hey guys. I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. I thought it was pretty fluffy which I know you all enjoy. If you did like this chapter, please comment and vote! And like always, I hope you all stay healthy and safe!
Also, in case you were wondering, the request for this was the part where Natasha asks Steve if he's forgetting anything and he kisses her but she was actually talking about the shield.
I'm not sure if this is exactly what was in mind for the request but I hope you all still liked it :)
