Finding the Words

Requested by Sucker4LoveStory, Natasha dated Bucky when she worked for KGB and confronts Steve about it when he comes back.

Steve couldn't remember a time where he had been more happy. He had been dating the love of his life for six months now and although she still hadn't told him she loved him, Steve was pretty sure that she was as happy with him as he was with her.

On top of that, Bucky was finally back to himself. He had just moved back into the compound and was beginning to train with the rest of them a few times a week to possibly become part of the team eventually.

The day he was moving in, Steve could hardly contain his happiness.

"What's got you so happy?" Natasha asked from her spot on his bed when he came in with a tray of breakfast for her.

Steve grinned, "Bucky's moving into the compound today. T'challa just called me to let me know. Apparently he and Stark set it up a while ago."

Natasha's smile faltered for a second but she plastered it back on the second it disappeared, "Today? That's great."

Steve sat next to her and raised an eyebrow, "Is something wrong?"

Natasha shook her head, "No. I mean, really Steve. That's really great. You'll get your best friend back."

Steve still wasn't a hundred percent sure she was being honest but he let it slide. Whatever it was, she wasn't going to tell him right now. She'd tell him when she was ready. She always did.

"Yeah, I'm excited to see him again. You wanna come down to the lobby with me to help them unload the plane? T'challa said they'd be here in twenty minutes."

Natasha shook her head, "You go ahead, I'm gonna take a quick shower and get dressed. I'll be down in a half hour or so."

Steve nodded, pressing a quick kiss to her forehead, "I'd offer to join you but I think I'm expected downstairs."

Natasha smirked, pulling him back down to her lips for a brief but passionate kiss as he stood to leave, "Don't worry. I'm sure you'll need a shower after helping Bucky unpack. Maybe I'll join you then."

Steve shook his head with a small smile, "You're a damn tease Romanoff."

She grinned again, "Only with you."

Steve rolled his eyes and pecked her lips again, "I'll see you soon."

Natasha nodded and Steve left the room.

She waited a few minutes for him to leave and then cursed quietly, running a hand through her hair and sighing.

Natasha had been putting off telling Steve about her past with Bucky for as long as she could. She knew he was still self-conscious about everything when it came to women, and knowing that she had a serious relationship with his best friend while he had been frozen in the ocean wouldn't do anything good.

She knew he trusted her. Steve would never think she was cheating on him.

What she was worried about, was that he would suddenly feel like he was in the way of the two people he cared about most.

Natasha worried that he'd try and let her go. That he would want her and Bucky to rekindle the romance they had long ago just because he wanted them both to be happy, even if it hurt him.

It wouldn't be reasonable of course. Natasha's feelings for Bucky had been something she left behind when she joined Shield. And when she met Steve, he was the only person who could make her feel the way she did.

Although she hadn't admitted it to him yet, she was head over heels in love with Steve Rogers.

That was something she could have never said about Bucky or any of the other relationships she had in her past.

Natasha took a quick shower and stared in the mirror for a moment as she combed out her hair. With Bucky in the compound, she knew that she needed to tell Steve of their past. She felt guilty enough for not telling him sooner.

Nothing would ever happen between them, and Natasha had made that clear to Bucky on one of the visits she and Steve had taken to Wakanda. He hadn't seemed bothered by her moving on and Natasha wondered how much he even remembered of their relationship.

Once she was dressed, Natasha joined Steve in the lobby and found him greeting T'challa and Bucky.

She smiled cordially at them both and T'challa smiled, "Agent Romanoff, pleasure to see you again."

Natasha smiled, "You too."

They finished greeting one another and started helping Bucky bring the few boxes he had up to his new room, which was a floor below Steve's.

It only took them a little less then an hour to get Bucky settled in and of course, Steve suggested that they all go out for lunch.

"I'm afraid I'm due back in Wakanda soon. Thank you for the offer though Captain. Perhaps next time," T'challa had said, saying a brief goodbye to Bucky and Natasha before leaving the compound.

"Buck?" Steve asked, looking back at his friend.

Bucky shook his head, "Gotta take a rain check. Fury wants to meet with me before I start any training so I'm catching a ride with Bird Brain in twenty minutes."

Steve nodded, "Good luck, and try not to kill Sam on the way there."

Bucky shrugged, "No promises."

Natasha and Steve left after a few more moments and decided just to grab takeout and bring it back to Steve's room.

During the car ride, Natasha was uncharacteristically quiet. She didn't tease Steve about his slow driving or make any innuendos just to see the blush rise to his cheeks as she normally did when they drove somewhere together.

"You alright Nat?" Steve asked, his voice making her attention shift from the window to him.

She frowned, "Hm?"

Steve frowned slightly, "I asked if you were alright. You've been acting strange today. Is it about Bucky? I know he shot you...and choked you...and then tried to kill me, but I can tell that he's back to himself again."

Natasha shook her head, "No, no. It's not that. Can we wait til we get back to talk about it?"

Steve felt his heart speed up, "Are we okay?"

Natasha sat up quickly, realizing that it sounded like she was breaking up with him, "Yeah, we're fine Steve. We're great. I promise we are. Just trust me okay? We can talk at home."

Steve nodded, not missing the way she had called the compound home. She had never done that before.

"What do you want for lunch?" Steve asked, changing the subject.

Natasha pursed her lips, thinking for a moment, "Burgers?"

Steve gave her a small smile and they drove to a small burger place where they could take their food to go.

Once they got back to Steve's room, they ate almost in silence. It was obvious that despite Natasha's reassurances, Steve was still worried about whatever it was she wanted to tell him.

And Natasha was just trying to figure out what she should say. She didn't want Steve to be resentful of Bucky and she didn't want him to feel self-conscious either.

Once they had finished eating, Natasha took his hand and led him to his couch, where she sat down right besides him, holding his hand and letting her other hand rest on the nape of his neck...her fingers periodically combing through his short hair.

"You gonna tell me what's going on?" Steve asked quiet. Sounding more curious than anything.

Natasha nodded, "I'm not sure how to tell you this."

Steve frowned, "Nat if I did something-"

"No. Steve you haven't done anything. It's about my past."

Steve's expression relaxed slightly, "Oh. Nat, you know you can tell me anything about you're past. I'll never judge you for it."

She nodded, "I know."

She paused and looked up at Steve, her eyes searching his as she finally spoke, "Back in the Red Room....I knew Bucky. He was James back then, and he trained me. At that time, he was the only person who I really trusted."

Natasha paused, wincing slightly as she spoke, "We had a forbidden romance for a while. Until they found out and brainwashed him completely."

Steve stayed quiet and let Natasha finish, his eyes never leaving hers.

"Before you, he was the closest thing I ever had to love."

Steve shifted slightly, fear flashing in his eyes.

"You loved him?" He asked quietly.

Natasha shook her head, "No. I didn't know what love was. He was just someone who I trusted. I was 17 and he was probably the only trainer I ever had who didn't rape me or hand me off to his friends for a night if I stepped out of line."

Steve frowned, every time she spoke of being raped it made him wish more then anything that he could have been the one to kill those bastards in the red room. He reached out a hand and brushed a piece of hair from Natasha's face.

She leaned into his touch and sighed, "I should have told you years ago. When we were taking down hydra and I found out that James, The Winter Soldier, and Bucky were all the same person, but I guess it just didn't seem important. And then as we got closer, I didn't want you to ever think I still had feelings for Barnes, because I don't. Every romantic feeling I had for him has been gone for a long time. Now I guess it just didn't feel right for you not to know."

Steve nodded, "Does Buck remember?"

Natasha nodded, "Not everything. He remembers training me and knows we were together, but I think everything else was wiped from his memory a long time ago. But I've already talked to him to make sure he knew I moved on and he didn't seem upset at all by it."

"And you? You're happy? Nat you know I love you, but the last thing I want is for you to feel obligated to stay with me. I know Bucky's a great man. If your heart is with him, I won't stop you two from being together again," Steve said sadly, looking down.

Natasha shook her head, "You know Steve, sometimes you're skull is thicker then concrete. I don't love Bucky. I love you."

Steve's eyes met hers and widened in shock, "You love me?"

"I do. You're my partner Steve. I don't wanna be with anyone but you," Natasha confessed quietly.

Steve smiled, "I love you too."

Natasha smiled and swiftly changed her position so that she was straddling Steve's hips. "I'm your girl Rogers. Nothings going to change that anytime soon."

She leaned forward and captured Steve's lips with hers in a slow and passionate kiss, her only goal being to show him exactly how much she loved him.

"I think you're still in need of a shower," She teased.

Steve laughed, "Yeah? You planning on joining me."

Natasha smirked, pulling him down for another searing kiss, "Damn right I am."

Steve pulled away breathless and stroked Natasha's cheek gently, "Did I mention I love you?"

Natasha laughed softly and kissed him again.

"Once or twice...but I certainly wouldn't mind hearing you say it a few more times," She mumbled between kisses.

Steve grinned and pulled away from her lips, peppering soft kisses along her jaw and neck, whispering "I love you" between every kiss.

Natasha sighed in utter contentment as he lifted her up and carried her to his bathroom. She never thought that she'd be in a relationship with a man but here she was. Steve Rogers was truly one of a kind and she didn't even know how to articulate how lucky she felt to have him love her.

She supposed the only words that came close were, "I love you."

Hey guys. I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. I'm actually really happy with the way it turned out so I hope I wasn't the only one lol. If you did enjoy, please comment and vote! And like always I hope you are all staying healthy out there!
