Drowning In Wool

Requested by ImLilMissComplicated, Steve and Natasha are drowning in over sized sweaters on a cold day....I'm not sure this is what you had in mind but I hope it's still enjoyable :)

Most everyone at the compound was well aware of the fact that Steve hated the cold. Even despite his super-serum, he still dreaded winter every time it came around.

No one ever questioned Steve if he bundled up on a chilly day and when he kept his room warmer then most people would enjoy, no one said anything.

After spending 75 years in the ice, it wasn't anyone's place to tell him that his room needed to be colder.

However, most people didn't know that Natasha hated the cold almost as much as Steve did. She was better at hiding it and refused to let anyone see how much it really got to her.

Except for Steve.

Steve had figured it out shortly after the first time he had gone to her floor and found it almost as warm as his own room even though it was the middle of fall.

She hadn't said anything to him until a few weeks later when the heater had stopped working because Thor had accidentally broken it while trying to prove that he could summon lightning without his hammer.

Natasha had walked to his floor and knocked on his door without words.

She hated seeming vulnerable but with Steve, she didn't mind as much.

"Hey," Steve said, opening the door and giving her a small smile.

She smiled softly at the sight of him in a blue sweatshirt and held up a blanket that she had been carrying, "Tony said the heater is gonna be out for at least a few hours."

Steve stepped to the side so that she could step into his floor and noticed that she seemed paler then normal, "You okay?"

Natasha sat down on his couch and looked up, almost confused, "Hm?"

Steve sat besides her and noticed small goosebumps appearing on her skin. She was only wearing a loose tank top and sweatpants despite the fact that the temperature outside was below 15 degrees.

He stood up and grabbed one of his hoodies, "Here. You looked cold."

Natasha looked like she wanted to argue but she seemed to stop herself and instead, accepted the hoodie, swiftly putting on over her head before giving him a grateful smile, "Leave it to Tony, Clint, and Thor to break the heater on the coldest day of the season."

Steve chuckled quietly, "Yeah, they don't exactly have the best timing."

Natasha shivered slightly and she moved slightly closer to Steve, "You know, I think I might hate the cold almost as much as you do."

Steve wrapped the blanket around her as well as himself and felt himself gain a little bit of confidence as he draped his arm over her shoulder tentatively, "I figured...I am surprised though, isn't Russia cold? I'd think you'd be unbothered by New York's winters."

Natasha relaxed into his touch and Steve took it as a sign and pulled her even closer, his hand resting on her shoulder. She sighed, "It's not that it bothers me. Just brings back bad memories."

Steve nodded, knowing the feeling. He looked down at her and saw her troubled features. He waited to speak, feeling as though she was about to elaborate.

"Back in the Red Room," She started, looking down at her hands, "They had a lot of ways to punish us if we did something wrong or broke the rules. One of the things they did was tie us out in the snow. They'd leave us out there for hours. Once, I was tied out there with another girl and I watched as she froze to death. They didn't even bring her body back inside."

Steve frowned. Every time he learned something new about Natasha's past it made him grow even more amazed at the fact that she had become a hero despite her horrendous past.

He reached for one of her hands and she let him take it. Her hands were freezing and Steve's felt like personal heaters, "I'm sorry you had to go through that."

She shook her head, looking up at him for a moment, "It's alright. We've all been through shit we didn't want to experience."

Steve nodded, "You know, I don't hate the cold just because I was stuck in the ice for 75 years...I've hated it a lot longer then that actually."

Natasha raised an eyebrow, waiting for him to continue.

"When I was growing up in Brooklyn. My ma couldn't afford any type of heater so we had one fireplace that normally had two or three logs burning over an entire week. Our apartment was always freezing and when she got sick, it was the middle of winter and all we had was one blanket. Bucky's family tried to help but eventually her cold just got worse and worse and eventually she died from it."

Natasha frowned slightly, giving his hand a light squeeze as her best effort to comfort him. She had never been good at voicing her sympathy so she figured it would be best to let her actions speak for her.

"We're all pretty fucked up huh?" She whispered, earning a quiet chuckle from Steve.

He nodded, "Yeah I guess we are."

She shivered again, noticing how much colder the room had gotten since she had come in, "Jesus...when's Tony going to fix that damn heater? It's going to drop below 30 in this damn tower pretty soon."

Steve nodded, "Got any ideas on how to stay warm?"

Natasha smirked, "I've got one."

Steve raised an eyebrow, "What is it?"

She shifted closer to him and wrapped her arms around his neck as she practically sat in Steve's lap, smirking wider at the way his ears turned bright red, "Well, they say body heat is the best way to keep warm."

Steve cleared his throat, his hands hovering awkwardly over Natasha's hips, "Yeah?"

She nodded, a dangerous grin resting on her lips as she moved even closer to Steve, "Mhm. That and friction."

Steve nearly choked on air, his eyes widening at her insinuation.

She laughed, "Relax, I'm mostly kidding."

Steve tried not to dwell on her choice of the word mostly and sighed, "You drive me crazy sometimes," He whispered, feeling her breathing against his lips.

Natasha smirked, "In a good way?"

Steve gave a short laugh, "In the best way."

"Good," Natasha said, bringing her hands up to Steve's jaw and tracing it with her fingers daintily, "I guess that means you wouldn't object if I kissed you?"

"Not at all," Steve managed to choke out, finding himself overwhelmed with love for the woman who was currently sending all of his emotions and senses into overdrive simply by asking if she should kiss him.

Natasha grinned, "Good."

She leaned forward and kissed Steve slowly, wanting to relish in the moment. A warm fuzzy feeling spread through her chest and Natasha couldn't help but wish the red room was here to see just how wrong they were.

If what she was feeling for Steve was love, then it definitely wasn't for children. It was too real...too dangerous...for children.

But between the two of them, it was perfect.

And as they kissed for the first time since their mission to escape Hydra, Natasha wondered why she hadn't done it sooner.

Kissing him, things fell into place and she didn't feel cold and lonely anymore.

It was the closest and most intimate she had ever felt with someone and yet, they were literally covered in layers and blankets.

But Natasha and Steve seemed to both decide that it didn't matter that they were drowning in wool blankets and sweatshirts. All that mattered was her lips against his as they tried to express how much they loved each other without having to say the words.

When they finally pulled away, it seemed that Steve couldn't help himself from letting the confession spill from his lips, "I love you Nat."

He looked startled at his own words for a moment but then his expression changed to nervous and Natasha couldn't help but grin, "I think I love you too Steve. But I might need you to kiss me one more time to be sure."

Steve grinned and did exactly that.

As it turned out, Natasha was right...body heat and friction really were the best ways to stay warm.

Hey guys. This is a lot of stuff that I just made up as far as Natasha and Steve's reasons for not liking the cold but I felt like it fit their characters so I hope you agreed. If you enjoyed this chapter, please comment and vote! Like always, I hope you're all staying healthy and safe!
