Bring You Home
A highly requested part two to James Rogers.
Steve gently cradled his sons head in his arms as the boy drifted off to sleep.
Two weeks had passed. Two weeks without Natasha, and for James, two weeks without his mother.
It was taking a toll on Steve and James both. James had become more fussy then normal and threw terrible tantrums over small inconveniences.
Steve tried to continue parenting James the way he should but far to often he would find himself breaking down in front of James.
He couldn't even act strong because frankly, Natasha had been the glue that kept him together. She was his everything and more.
Without her he didn't feel like himself. He was just empty.
His everyone tried to help. Sam and Bucky often came over to help entertain James.
Pepper came and made dinner for them and brought Morgan along as a playdate, despite having suffered her own loss.
Wanda often stayed over to help Steve when James woke up crying for his mother in the middle of the night.
Even Clint would take James some weekends to play with Nathaniel.
Steve appreciated everything they were doing but nothing helped to ease the pain he was in.
James stirred in his arms and opened one of his eyes, already tearing up.
"I want mom." He whispered tearfully.
Steve forced the lump in his throat down. "I know. I know." He said quietly, brushing his fingers through his sons hair.
He could hardly even look at James without feeling the tears well up in his throat. Everytime he looked at him, all he saw was Natasha's eyes looking right back at him.
When Natasha was alive, he loved that the two people he cared for the most shared the same eyes...now it was just a cruel reminder of what he had lost.
Steve pulled James to his chest and quietly whispered reassurement that everything would be ok. It worked, but it was a promise he didn't even believe.
Not being able to sleep, Steve stayed up thinking about returning the stones.
He couldn't help but wonder if there was a way to bring her home. A way to reverse the trade.
Despite that it was nearly three am. Steve jumped up and called Bruce.
"Bruce. I need to be the one to return the stones. And I want to leave tomorrow."
Bruce sighed. "Cap are you sure?"
Steve nodded. "Yes. Meet me at the transporter at ten."
Steve hung up and called a few more people.
The next morning he dropped James off with Clint and his family.
"Are you sure about this Steve?" Clint asked, taking James into his arms.
James frowned. "Don't leave daddy." He pleaded reaching out for him.
Steve kissed James' forehead. "I'll be back soon. I promise."
Clint sighed. "Be careful Steve. And don't get your hopes up. It'll just make it harder if you can't do it."
Steve nodded. "I know. Thank you again for watching him so last second."
Clint nodded. "Of course. It's not a problem, just make sure you come back. Don't get yourself killed."
Steve sighed. "I won't." He looked down at James again and smiled. "Be good for Uncle Clint. I'll be back soon."
With that, Steve drove to the remains of the avengers base where they had set up a new transporter.
Bruce greeted him quietly and handed over a suit. "I'm ready when you are." He told him.
Steve got changed and held his shield tightly with a case full of all the stones in the other hand.
"Ready."
"Alright, going in three, two, one...." Bruce said, sending Steve back in time.
Steve returned the first five stones as quickly as possible, saving the soul stone for last.
Once all of the stones except for the soul were back in the correct time and placed Steve went to Vormir.
His heart was beating quickly as he hiked up the mountain. Every part of him was just praying that he could do it.
He didn't know how but he knew that he had to bring her home.
Without Natasha nothing was right in the world.
Steve was greeted by the red skull. His oldest enemy was also the person who he needed help from the most.
"I need to trade the stone back for Natasha." He said, trying to seem strong.
"Not possible." The ghostly figure stated.
Steve felt his lungs growing tighter. "It has to be. If the stone isn't returned then why shouldn't the trade be reversed. A soul for a soul."
The red skull sighed. "It's never been done."
"There's a first time for everything. Now trade her back." Steve demanded, growing angrier by the second.
"You can try. Toss the stone off the cliff and perhaps the trade will reverse. I do not know the rules on returning the stone."
Steve walked to the edge of the cliff and felt his breath catch in his throat.
Right here, Natasha had sacrificed herself. Looking down he swore he could make out the blood stains despite the fog.
Closing his eyes, Steve tossed the stone over the edge, praying it would work.
For a moment, nothing happened, then there was a large blue flash of light and everything fell silent again.
"Steve?"
Steve turned around quickly and felt his throat go dry. "Nat? Is it really you?" He asked quietly.
Natasha nodded, running towards him and throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes. It's me. What are you doing here? Why am I here?"
Tears streamed down Steves cheeks as he gently ran his fingers across her face. "I- I traded the stone back, it reversed your sacrifice."
Natasha wiped Steve's tears away and kissed him with everything she had.
Pulling away, her eyes widened slightly with fear. "Where's James??"
"He's with Clint. He misses you. God, Natasha we both missed you so much." Steve said, more tears falling.
"I'm sorry I left you both. I love you so much."
Steve kissed her again and sighed. "I love you too. Now let's go home and let James see his mom."
They transported back and drove to Clint's faster then ever.
Natasha opened her door and followed Steve anxiously to the door.
Clint opened it and his mouth fell open. "Natasha?"
She smiled at Clint and was about to give him a hug when she heard James from inside the house. "Mommy!" He yelled, running as fast as his small legs could carry him.
Natasha scooped him up into her arms and laughed tearfully. "Hey, I missed you!"
James clung onto her neck and burried his head in her hair.
Steve smiled, tears welling up at the sight of his son reuniting with Natasha.
Eventually, they made it inside for a tearful reunion.
Finally, Natasha was home.
