Braid My Fears Away
Before going to retrieve the stones using the time machine, Steve and Natasha are getting ready. She has him braid her hair for her and they talk about their fears.
Natasha sat quietly on her bed, trying to dry her damp hair with a towel.
Tomorrow they were going to get everyone back. She was sure it would work. It had too.
Despite her strong faith in the plan. She was still terrified. If they failed she wouldn't know what to do with herself.
She was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn't notice a knock on her door. She had even forgotten that she had a roommate for the next few days. According to Tony, there wasn't enough room for everyone to have their own room.
Somehow she ended up as the only one sharing a room.
She wasn't too upset though, because Steve was going to be sharing a room with her.
They had roomed together many times on missions so she knew nothing would be awkward. At least not too awkward.
When Natasha finally opened the door, Steve was standing outside it with a sheepish look on his face. "You sure you don't want me to just sleep on the couch?" He asked.
Natasha shook her head as her eyes roamed his body. He was wearing black joggers and a tight white tank top that highlighted everyone of his sculpted muscles.
She had to stop herself from staring as she finally stepped away from the door. "No you can just stay with me. Sorry I didn't answer sooner, I was just lost in my thoughts."
Steve nodded. "Thinking about tomorrow?"
Natasha nodded and went back to trying to comb out her hair, which was tangled worse then before.
Steve watched her for a second and then tentatively held out his hand. "Want some help?"
Natasha raised an eyebrow. "You want to brush my hair?"
Steve shrugged. "I used to do it for my mom all the time"
Natasha smirked a little and handed him the brush, adjusting her position so that she was sitting in front of him.
Steve began to brush her hair and Natasha couldn't help but feel a little warm inside.
He had that effect on her and she loved him for it.
Slowly and gently, he brushed all the tangles of her red locks. He even ran his fingers through it many times to make sure there were none left.
Natasha tried to hide her disappointment when he handed her the brush back.
She was about to stand up and go to put it up when Steve spoke again. "I could braid it if you want."
Natasha couldn't help but smile. "Why not."
Steve began to braid her hair slowly and Natasha sighed.
"Do you think it'll work?" Steve asked Natasha. Fear creeping into his voice.
Natasha bit her lip. "I have to believe it will. Because if it doesn't then I won't know what to do."
Steve nodded. "Me neither."
"I'm worried." Natasha confessed.
"About what? It not working?"
Natasha shrugged. "Yeah. That too. But also about you, Tony, Clint... I've already lost half my family. I don't know if I can bear to lose you guys too."
Steve paused his braiding and grabbed Natasha's hand. "You won't lose us Nat. We're the Avengers. If anything, we know how to survive."
"Just promise me you'll be careful." Natasha asked, closing her eyes.
"I promise. You'll be careful too right?"
Natasha nodded.
Steve continued braiding and sighed. "Good. I'd be lost without you Nat."
Natasha held her breath. All she wanted to do was tell Steve how she felt. She wanted to tell him how she felt, but now was not the time.
She would just have to wait until they got back.
Steve finished braiding and Natasha smiled as she examined the braid. "Looks great. You're good at this." She complimented.
Steve smiled. "Thanks....do me a favor and don't tell Tony about this?"
Natasha laughed. "Ok. I won't. But seriously, I might start having you braid my hair every day."
Steve laughed. "It would be my pleasure."
Natasha laughed and leaned her head back on her pillow. Steve was laying besides her.
"Goodnight Captain." She said.
"Goodnight Nat."
Natasha grabbed Steve's hand under the covers and slowly drifted to sleep, still worried about time travelling, but feeling slightly less afraid.
So this was short and kind of a mess as far as timelines go but I've decided that in my mind, this actually happened in endgame and that it was just offscreen.
You can choose to believe this or not but either way, if you enjoyed this please vote and comment.
Also.
I had to think about this so now you do too. I couldn't find a smooth way to include this in the chapter but just imagine this is actually canon and during the scene before Nat sacrifices herself she is playing with her braid because she is thinking about what she promised Steve....
Goodnight.
