After the Final Battle

My take on what I wish happened once Thanos and his army we're defeated. In this version, no one is dead because I'm still living in denial. Takes place in the avengers training facility and includes most of the main characters.

Everyone was gathered around the fireplace in the living room.

Steve was helping Natasha stich her wounds, while she did the same for him.

Tony was reclining in a seat while Peter Parker and Pepper constantly checked up on him to make sure he was recovering from the snap well.

Thor was chatting with Clint, Bucky, Sam, and Scott.

The others had left to go home to their families and countries to try and restore order.

The room was quiet. No one needed to say anything. Any conversations going on lacked any substance. They didn't have any energy.

Natasha and Steve had been mending one another's injuries in near silence. Natasha had less then Steve did, so when he was finished with the large gash on her head, he was able to lean back and just let her help him.

She was currently treating the cut on his side that he had received from Thanos himself. It was deep and needed multiple stitches.

Steve winced as Natasha worked so she tried her best to distract him. "So, I hear you are worthy of Thor's hammer."

Steve forced a laugh. "Oh yeah. I forgot about that."

Natasha laughed. "You forgot that you could weild Thor's hammer? Isn't that kind of a big deal?"

Steve glanced over to make sure Thor wasn't listening. "Yeah. But the initial shock happened about 5 years ago. Remember that night when we all tried to pick it up?"

Natasha nodded, understanding. "You pretended like you couldn't lift it, why?"

Steve shrugged. "Didn't want to humiliate Thor. Plus there was no real reason to lift it. I don't want to rule Asgaurd."

Natasha smirked. "Well, that was awfully noble of you."

"What can I say? I am captain America after all."

Natasha hummed in agreement. "America's golden boy."

Steve scowled at the nickname but his distaste soon turned into a grimace of pain when Natasha continued to stitch his wound.

Natasha frowned. "Let me go get some ice, maybe that will help with the pain."

Steve just nodded and she left to get some. On her way info the kitchen, someone just about ran her over.

"Woah, watch out." She said, helping Peter back to his feet.

"Oh sorry, I didn't see you there. I don't think we've met. I'm Peter Parker."

"Nice to meet you Peter Parker. I'm Natasha. You're Tony's spider kid right?"

"Yup. You're the black widow, aren't you?"

Natasha nodded and Peter grinned. "Hey so we're like both spider people. That's so cool!"

Natasha couldn't help but laugh. She could see why Tony liked this kid so much.

"Well it was nice to meet you but I've got to bring Mr. Stark his coffee. See you later!" Peter said, running back to the living room.

Natasha got Steve some ice and resumed stitching him up. After a few more minutes, his injuries were all patched up.

Now most of the avengers were just gathered around in silence. Tony finally spoke up. "How about we watch a movie or something. This silence is killing me."

No one objected, and they soon scrolled through movies to try and find one they wanted to watch.

When they finally decided upon watching Interstellar, everyone quietly sat on the couches and floor surrounding the giant flat screen tv.

There was limited room on the couch, so Natasha had been practically pushed up against Steve, who didn't seem to mind.

Embracing their closeness, Natasha put her head on Steve's shoulder and rested her legs across his lap. In return, Steve wrapped his arm around his shoulders.

Tony played the movie and no one spoke as they watched, except Peter, who kept asking questions.

Five minutes into the film, Tony paused it.

"Isn't it past your bedtime kid?" He asked Peter, who frowned.

"I'm 16 I don't have a bedtime."

"Well. Maybe you should. Your talking to much."

Natasha threw a pillow at Tony. "Oh let him stay. He just helped save the world."

Peter grinned at Natasha who couldn't help but smirk. Tony sighed but gave in.

"Thanks Natasha!"

She laughed. "We spider people gotta stick together."

Steve furrowed his brows in confusion. "Spider people?" He muttered to Natasha.

She laughed. "Well, he's Spiderman and I'm black widow."

Steve nodded in understanding and looked back towards the movie.

Natasha tried her best to lay attention but it lost her interest fairly quickly. She had seen it before and she was really just fine with being in the presence of her friends....her family.

Steve had also started to lose interest in the film. It was hard to concentrate on anything when Natasha was practically sitting in his lap.

Being this close to her wasn't unusual, but it still never failed to make his heart beat spiral out of control.

Normally when it happened, they were on missions together, pretending to be a couple. She always initiated it though. She would wrap her arms around his torso and rest her head on his chest.

During those times, he felt guilty. Not for being so close to her, but for wishing that it wasn't just because they were uncover. For wishing it was real.

The times that it was real, he always found himself turning red and stumbling over his words.

This was normally on days like today, where they had just returned home from a battle or a mission and they were both exhausted beyond belief.

The times like this made all the pain of his past seem non-existent.

She had that effect on him.

Steve was sure that Natasha could feel his heart beating rapidly beneath her head, but she didn't mention it.

There was no flirty joke. No teasing. No questions. She just ignored it.

The truth was, Natasha's own heart seemed to speed up when she was with Steve.

After years of being an assassin, spy, and avenger, very few things could get her adrenaline going.

Somehow, being around Steve always did the trick.

She had always said love was for children, but when she was with him she wondered if maybe being a child every once and a while wasn't such a bad thing.

He didn't erase the pain from her past. Nothing could do that. But he did make it bearable.

At some point in the movie, Natasha drifted off to sleep. Steve had looked down at her when he felt her tight grip on him loosen.

He couldn't help but allow a small smile when he noticed that in her sleep, she looked peaceful.

Not wanting to disturb her sleep, Steve tried to finish watching the movie.

Across the room, Peter was confused.

He tapped on Tony's shoulder. Tony turned towards Peter with an annoyed glare.

"Stop asking me questions about the movie. If you just watch it will be answered."

Peter shook his head. "No, that's not what I was gonna ask."

Tony rolled his eyes. "Fine. Then what were you going to ask."

Peter motioned towards Natasha asleep in Steve's lap. "Are they like... A thing?"

A grin spread across Tony's lips. He didn't answer Peters question and instead started throwing popcorn at Bucky and Sam, who were sitting on the ground in front of them.

Sam turned around angrily, "What the hell do you want Tony?"

"Look." He said, discreetly pointing at the couple.

Sam and Bucky looked over and both grinned as well.

They threw some more popcorn at Thor, until he too noticed how close the pair beside him had gotten.

Thor winked at everyone watching and stretched out his arms. "Lord Steve, would you be so kind as to move over a little more. I'm feeling rather cramped for space."

Steve got as close to the couch armrest as possible but Thor continued to make himself more room until Steve had no choice but to pull Natasha completely into his lap.

He blushed and Thor thanked him, casting a sly grin at the others.

Now Natasha was sitting in Steve's lap, her head had fallen to rest on his chest and her arms had subconsciously wrapped around his neck when he moved her.

Sam and Bucky highfived while Tony explained to Peter that they weren't a thing, but it was painfully obvious to everyone around them that they had feelings for one another. They had been working to get them together for nearly four years now.

Peter now understood and mumbled a suggestion into Tony's ear.

Tony grinned and stood up. "Hey Cap, why don't you carry her up to her room? You don't seem to be very interested in the movie."

Steve looked down at Natasha and nodded. "Good idea."

He carefully stood up and walked towards the elevator. "Night guys." He said before stepping in it.

As soon as the elevator doors closed, Tony turned off the TV. "Everyone to the security cameras!"

The remaining avengers ran to the security room and watched anxiously as Tony pulled up the surveillance footage of the elevator. Tony pushed a button and the elevator came to a hault.

"What the hell..." Steve muttered, pressing the button again.

The elevator remained motionless and Steve sighed, pressing the help button.

Jarvis came over the intercom and told Steve that the elevator would be out of service for thirty minutes.

Steve shook his head and leaned against the elevator wall.

"Great." He mumbled.

Everyone waited for something to happen. About ten minutes later, Natasha stirred in her sleep and her eyes fluttered open.

Everyone in the surveillance room went silent and watched attentively.

"Steve? Why are we in an elevator?" She asked when she became aware of her surroundings.

Steve blushed. "You fell asleep during the movie so I was bringing you up to your room, but then the elevator broke down." He told her, still holding  her.

Natasha laughed. "Well thanks for not waking me, but you can put me down now."

Steve set her down and blushed again. "Oh right. Sorry."

"How long has it been stuck?"

Steve shrugged. "About ten minutes. Jarvis said it would be thirty before the elevator was operating again."

Natasha sighed. "Alright then. We might as well get comfortable." She said, sitting down.

Steve followed her lead and slumped down beside her.

Natasha looked up at Steve and frowned. "Your bleeding again." She said, running her hand over a cut that had recently opened up again."

Steve brought his hand up to the cut. "I am?"

She nodded and pulled a tissue from her pocket, dabbing lightly at the wound to stop the blood flow.

"You know, you really ought to be more careful out there. You've got more cuts and bruises then anyone."

"I didn't know you cared." He teased.

Natasha smirked. "Well, the team can't afford to lose it's captain. And I don't know what I would do without you on missions. Who else is going to pretend date me?"

Steve laughed. "I'm sure there's a line of thirty men who would gladly replace me."

"None of them would be you." She said, the lightness in her tone slowly becoming serious.

Before Steve could reply, the elevator started up again. He wanted to say something, but he was lost for words.

He could tell there was meaning behind those words. She meant it. And it gave him hope, just a tiny slimmer of hope, that maybe she felt as he did.

Everyone in the surveillance room yelled. "No! Stop the elevator again Tony! They were getting somewhere."

Tony dismissed them. "Relax. I've got a plan."

Steve and Natasha lived on the same floor, so he walked with her to her room.

She tried to unlock the door with her key and cursed. It wouldn't budge. "Jarvis. Unlock the door." She said, pressing the button.

The door remained closed. "What the hell?" She said, trying to kick it open.

Steve eventually joined her in trying to open it but it remained locked.

Natasha pulled her phone out of her back pocket and called Tony.

He shushed everyone in the surveillance room and answered it on speaker.

"Hey Romanoff. What's up."

"Stark why the hell isn't my door working?"

"Did you try using your key?"

Natasha rolled her eyes. "Yes I tried using my key, and I used voice recognition. Nothing's working."

Tony faked a yawn. "I don't know. Maybe just sleep somewhere else tonight. I'll figure it out in the morning."

"Stark I swear to G-" Natasha started but Tony hung up.

"Damn him." Natasha muttered.

"Bad news?" Steve asked.

"He told me to sleep somewhere else and that he'd look at it tomorrow."

Steve awkwardly motioned towards his room. "Well if you want, I've got an air mattress you can sleep on in my room."

"You don't mind?"

Steve shook his head.

Natasha thanked him and followed Steve into his room.

Steve rummaged through the closet until he found the air mattress. He plugged it into the socket and pressed the button to blow it up.

Tony quickly alerted Jarvis. "Hey Jarvis. Turn off the power on the 6th floor."

The lights in Steve's room flickered before turning off and the air mattress stopped inflating.

Steve shook his head. "What is going on tonight?"

Natasha shrugged, wondering the same thing herself.

Steve found a few old candles in his closet and lit them so that they had a little bit of light.

Steve gestured towards his bed. "You can take the bed and I'll sleep on the floor."

Natasha shook her head. "No you will not."

"Well I'm not going to let you take the floor."

"Why not?"

Steve cast a glare at Natasha and she rolled her eyes. "The bed is probably big enough for both of us, why don't we just share it?" Natasha suggested.

Steve nodded and laid down beside her.

Natasha turned on her side to face him and sighed in content. She stared into Steve's bright blue orbs and an unspoken gratitude passed between them.

"I'm really glad you're okay Steve." She mumbled, unsure of how much weakness she wanted to show him.

Steve smiled at her. "I'm glad you're okay too Nat. I don't know what I'd do without you."

Natasha nodded in agreement. "You know, for a moment there I really thought it was over for all of us. Right before everyone came back. I was stuck under a pile of ruble but I could see you clearly. It was just you left. Thanos and his entire army against you. I tried to get up and help but I couldn't move. I really thought that was the end. Because not even you could take on an entire army alone. Then everyone came back."

Steve could see the pain in Natasha's eyes. Unshed tears welled up in her eyes at just the memory of thinking he would die.

Steve understood though. Without thought, he wrapped his arm around Natasha and pulled her into his embrace. She returned it without hesitation.

"When Clint arrived before you, I thought something terrible had happened. I probably thought of a million different bad things that could have happened in the three second delay. It was like my entire world just stopped, because for a minute, I thought I might have to live without you." Steve confessed recalling the painful moment.

Natasha placed her hand on Steve's cheek and he melted into her touch. "I'm not going anywhere."

Steve nodded and closed his eyes. Wishing this moment would last forever.

Natasha stared at Steve's lips. They were so close, so inviting. She wanted nothing more then to feel them against her own.

Taking a leap of faith, Natasha slowly wrapped her arms around Steve's neck and pulled him closer to her. Inch by inch until he was finally a hairs width away from her. She looked into his eyes, silently asking if he wanted this too.

He didn't wait another second to connect their lips. Natasha closed her eyes and responded with the passion that had been building up inside of her for years. All those feelings were now bubbling to the surface for both of them.

Steve was the first one to pull back. "Natasha, god, do you know how long I've I wanted to do that for?"

Natasha couldn't help but laugh. "Not my fault you didn't do it sooner. In fact, I think I was the one to initiate that."

Steve shut her up with another kiss. "Please tell me this actually means something Nat. Tell me it's not just about physical attraction."

"It's not Steve, I promise. While I do find you insanely attractive. It means so much more then that."

Steve sighed in relief and kissed her again. "Can I take you out on a date tomorrow? A real date?"

Natasha's face lit up, "Did you even have to ask?"

Steve grinned and kissed her again.

Meanwhile the rest of the avengers were cheering and highfiving each other in the surveillance room.

Tony fist pumped the air. "Romanogers baby! That's how it's done!"

So, this was a strange and somewhat drawn out One-Shots but I hope you enjoyed. Please comment and vote if you did!

Also, feel free to leave any suggestions for future One-Shots and I'll be happy to do them!
