Chapter Nine

Tony's POV

Walking around an abandoned place where you know a bunch of crazy people have been to before you is unpleasant. You get this constant feeling like someone is breathing down your neck ready to jump on you.

No one knew exactly what to do. How could this be the second part to clue one? And if so what did this hell hole have to offer? Lucky for us it was our job to figure it all out.

"First off thank you Peter for getting us away from the scary cat lady. Second of all what the hell are we supposed to do here?" I asked. The others seemed to have hardly heard my question. Peter looked tired and was slumped over in the debris next to Nat who looked to be rather sick. Her skin was pale and she just seemed sort of out of it. But it made sense Scarlett also looked to be fazed but she'd used her powers to get us all here it was understandable.

Thor was glancing about anxiously while Vision paced about studying even the smallest of details. Steve was leaning against the wall his arms crossed and brow furrowed. It was his thinking face.

"Maybe it's history related as well." Vision proposed. "The catacombs were an important part of history, of time, so was the treatment of the insane."

"Yeah but how does that have to do with the Uniter. Which crazy Shadow walking people and magic?" Peter asked with a sigh.

"The Uniter obviously has a goal. It's in the name. To bring things together." Steve said now pacing as he talked. "At first I thought maybe it was to bring his people to earth. To unite them so he may expand his kingdom. Now I'm starting to think it's to unify everything. To unify a part of history with the current time period. Something that was forgotten; sort of how they were."

"Past to present." Nat said her voice soft as if she were thinking of something else.

"Exactly." Steve said.

Vision nodded in approval. "It seems plausible. If we are looking from a historical stand point. Tony is there any way you can research?"

"Nope. This puppy is for weapon uses only. Small and portable." I patted the metal glove on my hand accidentally firing off a beam. It smacked into the ground leaving a dent.

"How about you take it off?" Scar asked seeming to have recovered a bit.

"Nope I'm keeping it on this place gives me the creeps." I said shivering for effect.

"Still maybe we should split up? Look around for something." Peter suggested standing shakily his wounds prominent on his figure.

"Or we could leave it unguarded." Thor said.

"No." Nat shook her head. "We've already started the game if we stop who knows what they'll do."

"Agreed." Steve said. "Partner system again. Look around maybe there's something we're missing."

"I'll go with Scar." Peter and Vision said at the same time. The two of them shared an awkward look.

"I'm staying put I feel like shit." Scar said and she looked the part as well.

"Me too." Nat added. Steve and her shared a bit of a silent look and I could only imagine what they were saying to one another.

"I'll take Thor." I smiled patting him on the shoulder. "Let's go buddy it's hammer time."

Thor chuckled and patted my shoulder as well causing me to wince a bit. He never really understood the use of less force when it came to us mortals.

"I will accompany Captain Rogers." Vision said floating over.

"Guess I'll be on my own. That's cool." Peter shrugged standing up. "Time to search."

With that he crawled along the wall and out of sight. I could only imagine if I'd seen this in real life without knowing him and without a suit I'd think I was the real crazy one.

Thor swung his hammer carelessly as we walked out and down the ruined halls. I stepped over some rubble and scanned the blank and damaged scenery for anything interesting. We made it to a crumbling staircase the lower half of it had been completely demolished. Thor picked me up with ease and boosted me up into the landing.he then jumped up easily landing next to me.

"Thanks." I smiled.

"Any time." Thor boomed his voice always loud. He set off up the stairs his red cape dragging in the silt and rubble. I followed after him clambering up the stairs to the next level. This one seemed to be in a much worse condition. Large chunks of the building had fallen away and black scorch marks decorated the landscape.

"Fire." I mumbled dragging my fingers through the ash marks on the walls. "We should find its source."

"Agreed maybe it's important." Thor said his eyes studying the burn marks that seemed to thicken the farther we walked. "I believe we're going in the right direction."

"Me too big guy." Soon all there was was black. Soot was everywhere the scent clung to not only me but the air as well. Our footsteps left clear patches on the floor behind us.

It all ended at a room which was at the end of a hall. The door that had once guarded it was gone and dissolved into cinders. It crunched and caved under my footsteps.

"Nothing like crispy doors to step on." I grumbled knowing my shoes were now ruined from the ash that now settled on top of them.

"It appears to have started here." Thor said. The entire room looked like an over cooked chicken. The wall paint was roasted to black or near black and peeled off the walls. In some places it had melted. To the right was a broken computer its screen was shattered and wires spilled out of it. The keyboard was a melted blob on the floor.

The desk or had been standing on had one side gone and was now sideways. To the left were file cabinets most of which looked relatively in tact.

"Looks like this could be helpful." Thor said opening the drawer of one and it popped out with a loud bang as he broke the handle causing it to drop to the floor. "Oops."

"Don't sweat it let's see what's in here." I stooped down to see charred and partially burned files. "Great more reading."

"These are called 'level one cases'" Thor read a label on the front of the drawer. Standing I glanced at the others and paused seeing one that said. Level seven. Tugging on it the drawer wouldn't budge. Thor walked over and pulled it out easily.

Inside were only four files. All four of different names. "I think this could be important."

"Same. Let's take them back to the others. We can start with these then work on the others if need be." With that Thor and I made the long trek back to where we had all previously been.

"Scar just drop it." Nat sighed pinching the bridge of her nose as we walked in. Scarlett looked up at us expectantly.

"Tell me we didn't interrupt anything." Thor said worriedly.

"You're fine what's up?" Scarlet asked though she shared a look with Nat.

"We found these bad boys!" I smiled tossing the folders to her. Scarlet looked a bit surprised but glanced over them.

"Level seven case reports." She said pulling one open. "Are these records of patients?"

Nat reached out and grabbed one of her own scanning over it. "Yeah seemed like these were the craziest of crazies."

"We should tell the others so they can see them as well." Scarlet said. Thor nodded and walked into the hall. He cleared his throat and we all covered our ears knowing what was to come.

"EVERYONE WE'VE GOT SOMETHING TO SHOW YOU!" Thor yelled his voice thundering down the hallway and echoing throughout the building.

"I hate it when you do that." I frowned. Thor just shrugged and a few moments later the others came running back.

Vision walked in followed by Peter then Steve. "What's been found?"

"These." Scarlet held up the folders. Vision took on from the small stack and examined it. "Have you read them yet?"

"No we were waiting on you." Thor smiled politely.

"Well we're here what do they say?" Peter asked excitedly sitting down cross cross applesauce like a kid.

"We could start with mine." Scarlet suggested pulling out the stack of sheets inside. "Name is William Withal. Level seven case. Placed here in about 18 something the handwriting is bad."

"What's he do that they put him here for?" Vision asked.

"It's a long list apparently he was oh wow." Scarlet looked queasy.

"What?" Peter asked curiously.

"It says and I quote. Killed and ate his victims starting with their eyes and-" Scarlet looked away tossing the folder aside. Nat looked like she was gonna throw up on everyone and I couldn't blame her even my stomach wanted to get rid of everything I'd eaten.

"Next one please." Vision said with a shiver.

"Gladly." Scarlet said picking up the other one in her lap. "Name is Vincent Armstrong. Level seven as well. Instituted due to his inability to differentiate dream from reality. Special care notes: Avoid mentioning the difference."

"Sounds pretty normal compared to the last one." Steve said.

"Next." I said wanting to see if we'd actually found anything. Nat opened the one she held and pulled out the overview of information as Scarlet had.

"Name is Dimitri Sandoval." She read. "Level...eight case."

"I thought you said they were only level sevens." I looked at Thor expectantly he just shrugged.

"Instituted for demonic activities. Special notes: Attempts to contact a mysterious being." Nat handed the paper to Peter who wanted to read it for himself. She dug through the rest of the folder her eyes darting over the information. She was insanely quick at reading. "Painted shapes on the walls of his cell at one point. Cell number 273."

"Lets check it out." Peter said standing up. He lead the way out walking quickly as if everything would disappear before we got there.

"Why do I have a horrible feeling about this?" Scarlet asked following him. Thor went next and then Vision.

"You good?" Steve asked Nat who hadn't moved and was still reading away.

"Yeah." She nodded before closing the file and standing up. "There wasn't anything else really."

"Okay let's go love birds." I said tugging on their arms so they'd come with me. Steve rolled his eyes but laughed lightly.

"Tony I swear you're like a five year old dragging their parents to open presents on Christmas morning." Nat said flatly an annoyed look in her eyes.

"Yes I know we've been over this I'm a child." I rolled my eyes and stopped where the others had. Peter pointed up at a number above the door.

"Bingo!" He smiled and kicked down the door which was still standing. It toppled over with a loud bang and the group of us walked inside. Needless to say what was on the inside was interesting.

"What in God's name." Steve mumbled.  On the walls were markings all in red. Symbols of all sorts surrounding a large diagram on the floor. It was familiar just like the one from earlier.

"Guess we found the right place." Peter mumbled walking around carefully.

"They're Norse relics." Thor said looking at the walls. "A human should not have this knowledge."

"What does it say?" I asked.

"It just says 'read the sheet.' Over and over again." Thor frowned.

"We did though." Scarlet frowned. "It hardly said anything."

"No I think it means this one." Vision said holding up a sheet that had belonged to the bed. He held it up and painted on it in what looked to be like blood was the Uniter's symbol. Below it was more.

"That's a spell." Thor said nervously. "Only the ancient magicians would know this one."

"What does it do?" Peter wondered aloud.

"It can take you back to a fixed point of time." Thor glanced about.

"Do you think we have to activate it?" Steve questioned.

"I don't see why not it's the only thing we've got so far." Nat replied.

"Can you read it out loud Thor?" I asked glancing up at him. He nodded and squinted struggling to read the messy writing.

"Fictum oram pit." Thor said and as the last word left his mouth the words flowed a vibrant red. Vision dropped the sheet nervously and the room became illuminated.

The cracks in the walls began to fade as if they were never even there. The ceiling light flickered to life and the sheet moved back to the bed the writing disappeared.

"What the fuck." Peter scrambled backwards pressing his back to the wall a look of fear in his eyes. Vision inched towards Wanda. Steve watched with wide eyes grabbing Nat's hand.

The blood on the walls gradually vanished until everything was intact and in order. Even the door was now back in place.

"I think my bad feeling was right." Scarlet said anxiously. We all bunched up in the back corner of the room keeping our eyes peeled on the door. Nothing happened for a long time.

Everyone jumped with a startle as the door opened with a loud bang. There were two men dressed in white garb holding upright a trolley with a man strapped to it. He had a muzzle on his face his dark eyes flicking about the room.

They set him upright and slowly undid the straps to his prison. He walked off the trolley calmly and rubbed his red and sore wrists. He thanked the nurses calmly and shut the door behind them. It was the complete opposite of what I expected to happen, I expected him to be insane, the oddest person alive.

I guess what made it even more creepy was the fact that he was normal. Or at least he seemed to be normal.
