Chapter 40

As Melissa finally left, I sank deeper into my chair, my thoughts in turmoil. Max and I were together now, weren't we? My mind flashed back to the passionate, tender moments we'd shared. It had all felt so real, so intense. Yet a small voice in my head whispered, "But what if it's not enough?"

How could I compete with someone like The Benefactor? She was everything I wasn't - powerful, sophisticated, part of Max's world in a way I could never be.

What did I, a nobody from small-town Oregon, have to offer in comparison? How could I prove my worth not just to Max, but to the high-stakes world he inhabited?

"Ah, ma chérie, why ze long face?" Jean-Pierre's voice startled me from my reverie.

I looked up, forcing a smile. "It's nothing, Jean-Pierre. Just... thinking."

He raised an eyebrow, pulling up a chair. "Zinking, you say? It looks more like brooding to me. Come now, what troubles you?"

I hesitated, then decided to confide in him. "Jean, do you ever feel... inadequate? Like you don't belong in this world?"

His expression softened. "Ah, I see. You're feeling out of place, non?"

I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat. "It's just... everyone here comes from such impressive backgrounds. And I'm just... me."

Jean-Pierre leaned forward, his eyes intent. "Ma belle, do you know why I pushed for you to lead the Sakura project?"

I shook my head.

"Because I saw potential in you. Ze kind of potential zat doesn't come along often. You have a keen mind for business, ma chérie, and a drive zat sets you apart. Don't sell yourself short."

His words warmed me, but doubt still lingered. "I want to make a real difference here, Jean," I continued, pushing past the sudden tightness in my throat. "I want to lead more projects, maybe even a department someday. But I look at Max, at you, and I see how far I have to go. Even right now, I'm still just Max's assistant. How do I bridge that gap?"

Jean-Pierre's eyes widened slightly, but he quickly composed himself. "Charlotte, we brought you onto ze Sakura project because we both saw untapped potential in you. Your background is precisely what gives you a unique perspective."

I absorbed his words, feeling a small spark of confidence reignite. "You really think so?"

"I know so," he said firmly. "Now, tell me what's really bothering you. Zis isn't just about work, is it?"

His words cut straight to the tension in my chest. "What do you know about The Benefactor? Seeing Max with her, I can't help but wonder if I'm out of my depth. They seem so... compatible."

Jean-Pierre regarded me for a second, then continued. "She is impressive, c'est vrai. But Charlotte, you bring somezing different to ze table. Somezing fresh, uninhibited by ze constraints of our world."

"Ma chérie, love is not a competition. You and Ze Benefactor are very different women. What matters is what you bring to Maximilian's life, not how you compare to ozers."

His words struck a chord. Maybe I didn't need to compete with The Benefactor. Maybe what Max and I had was valuable precisely because it was different.

"Thank you, Jean," I said, feeling some of the weight lift from my shoulders. "I needed to hear that."

He patted my hand gently. "Anytime, ma chérie. Now, I believe you have a meeting to prepare for, non? Show zem what Charlotte Bennett is made of."

As Jean-Pierre left, I felt a renewed sense of determination. I might not be from Max's world, but I had my own strengths. It was time to stop doubting and start embracing what made me unique.

Finally, it was time for the meeting. Gathering my composure, I made my way to Max's office, my heart pounding with a mix of anticipation and dread.

Max stood by the window, his tall frame silhouetted against the skyline. Jean-Pierre was already seated, his usual jovial expression replaced by one of curiosity and slight concern.

The tension in the room was palpable as The Benefactor swept in, her presence commanding attention without effort. She moved with a grace that made me feel like a newborn giraffe in comparison. Her tailored charcoal suit exuded power, and her steel-gray eyes seemed to miss nothing as they scanned the room.

"Mr. Pemberton, Monsieur Duvall," she nodded to each in turn before her gaze settled on me. "Miss Bennett. I believe congratulations are in order for your recent success with the Sakura project."

I managed a polite smile, trying not to fidget under her scrutiny. "Thank you, ma'am. It was a team effort."

Her lips curved slightly, almost approvingly. "Indeed. Tell me, Miss Bennett, how do you see your role evolving at Pemberton Financial?"

I glanced at Max, who looked as tense as I felt, before answering. "I hope to continue growing and taking on more responsibility," I said, surprised by the steadiness in my voice. "My goal is to contribute to the company's success in whatever capacity I can."

The Benefactor hummed thoughtfully, her fingers lightly tapping the arm of her chair. "And if that capacity were to be... significantly expanded? How would you approach such a challenge?"

I blinked, caught off guard. "I... I would approach it with determination and a willingness to learn, ma'am. I believe in being prepared and adaptable. I'm not afraid of hard work or difficult decisions."

She nodded, seemingly satisfied, then turned to Max. "Mr. Pemberton," she said, her voice carrying a hint of amusement, "your protégée shows remarkable promise."

Max's face remained composed, but I could see the tension in his shoulders. "Thank you," he replied, his voice carefully neutral. "Charlotte has indeed shown exceptional aptitude."

"And your... personal investment in her development is commendable," she continued, her eyes flicking between us, "if perhaps a touch indiscreet."

My heart skipped a beat. I fought to keep my expression neutral, even as my mind raced. Had we been that obvious? How much did she know? Or was she just that perceptive?

Max cleared his throat, his emerald eyes darting between us. "Ms. Steelman, I can assure you--" he began, but she cut him off.

"Oh, spare me the platitudes, Max," she said with a wave of her hand. Her tone was firm but not unkind. "I'm not here to judge your personal affairs. I'm here because I see potential. In both of you."

I felt a flush creeping up my neck. The Benefactor knew about us, and she saw potential in me? I wasn't sure if I should feel relieved or terrified.

"Ma'am," I ventured, my voice steadier than I felt, "I want to assure you that our... personal relationship has never interfered with our professional duties."

Her gaze settled on me, her expression unreadable. "I should hope not, Miss Bennett," she replied. "Because what I'm about to propose will require the utmost professionalism from both of you."

Max and I exchanged a quick glance, a mix of anticipation and apprehension passing between us. Whatever she had in mind, it was clear that our relationship was about to face its biggest test yet.

The Bnefactor turned her intense gaze back to me. "Miss Bennett, I believe introductions are long overdue. My name is Tahlia Steelman, CEO of Steel Conglomerate and majority shareholder of Pemberton Financial."

My brain short-circuited for a moment. Tahlia Steelman - the heiress to the world's largest steel manufacturer, a company so vast it dwarfed many nations in comparison - had been watching me this whole time?

"It's an honor to meet you properly, Ms. Steelman," I managed, proud that my voice didn't waver.

"I've been observing your work closely, Miss Bennett," Tahlia continued, leaning forward slightly. "Your handling of the Sakura project was nothing short of impressive. So impressive, in fact, that I've decided to personally endorse you as Mr. Pemberton's successor for CEO of Pemberton Financial's domestic operations."

The room fell silent. I could practically hear the gears turning in Max's head as he processed this information. Jean-Pierre let out a low whistle, his eyes wide with surprise.

Max was the first to speak, his voice carefully neutral. "Miss Steelman, while I agree that Miss Bennett has great potential, this is quite unexpected."

Tahlia's gaze flicked to Max, cool but not unkind. "The business world doesn't expect for us to be ready, Pemberton. But as you know, this has been our plan all along. My endorsement of you for the International CEO position was contingent on finding a suitable successor for your current role."

Tahlia's lips curved into a slight smile. "Your success with Sakura confirmed what I already suspected, Max. You're ready for the international stage. And now, with Charlotte showing such promise, we can move forward with confidence. Wainwright won't be pleased, but that's business."

"I see," Max said, his brow furrowing slightly. "And how do you envision this dual transition working?"

Tahlia smiled, a hint of approval in her eyes. "I'm glad you asked. Over the next six months, I want Charlotte to shadow you in your current role while you begin taking on more international responsibilities. Monsieur Duvall, I'll need you to play a crucial role in mentoring Charlotte through this process."

Jean-Pierre straightened in his chair, a gleam of excitement in his eyes. "Oui, mon ami. It would be my pleasure to guide our rising star."

Tahlia turned back to me, her gaze softening slightly. "You have demonstrated the kind of innovative thinking and adaptability that Pemberton Financial needs as it grows. Of course, there will be challenges. Are you prepared for them, Charlotte?"

I nodded, still stunned but feeling a surge of excitement and determination. "Thank you for this opportunity, Miss Steelman. I'm ready to take on this challenge and prove myself worthy of your faith in me."

"I'm sure you will," she replied, her tone softening. "Please, call me Tahlia. After all, we'll be working quite closely together from now on."

I felt a flush of pride warring with the panic rising in my chest. "I... I feel honored, Ms. Steel-- Tahlia," I corrected myself, still struggling with the informality.

"May I ask," I ventured, curiosity overcoming my nerves, "what specific qualities did you see in me that led to this decision?"

Her expression softened slightly. "Your ability to think outside the box, Charlotte. The way you approached the Sakura project showed me that you're not afraid to challenge the status quo. In today's rapidly changing business landscape, that's exactly what we need. Plus, you have the education, the business experience, and the tenacity required for the position."

She paused, her gaze sweeping over all of us. "This is a pivotal moment for Pemberton Financial. Max, your expertise will be crucial in navigating our international expansion. Charlotte, your fresh perspective will help us innovate and grow domestically. And Jean-Pierre, your experience will be the glue that holds it all together. I have high expectations for all of you."

The weight of her words settled over the room, a mix of excitement and trepidation palpable in the air. As Tahlia prepared to leave, she paused at the door, her hand resting on the polished handle.

"Oh, and one more thing," she said, her tone serious. "I expect all of you to handle this transition with the utmost professionalism. Personal relationships," her eyes flicked briefly between Max and me, "should never interfere with the success of this company. Am I understood?"

We all nodded, the implications of her words clear. With that, she was gone, leaving behind a whirlwind of implications and a room full of shocked faces.
