Summary: Forced into marriage by duty and obligation, The Duke and Duchess of Rothbury parted ways a week after saying their vows under the explicit understanding that theirs was a marriage in name only. There would be no expectations of love, fidelity, or romance.

The Duke hates the American Heiress who married him only for his title, completely unaffected by the senseless tragedy that had made their marriage necessary in the first place. When an illness forces him to retire to the country, he makes sure to choose the property where his wife wouldn't be. Except that she is, and she is still as insufferable as ever.

The Duchess resents the man who killed her youthful dreams of love and abandoned her to live his bachelor life unencumbered. When she is jilted by her lover, and faced with inevitable ridicule, she decides to retire to her beloved estate in Cornwall, where she runs an orphanage. Never once does she expect to run into her cold, selfish, insufferable arse of a husband!

Forced into each other's company by circumstance, the couple begin to unravel their individual prejudices. Resentment turns into respect and friendship. Respect and friendship soon turn into attraction and affection.

Was love closer than either one of them could ever have imagined?

And that begged the question; can the Duke win his wife's favor, or is it far too late to make their marriage a love match?

Review: I'm not one to choose a historical romance, but I was so happy to read this story. It has everything: enemies to friends to lovers, comedy, tragedy, pain, lies, deceit, and so on.

The author brought these characters to life, made them believable, and had me rooting for the love of the Duchess and Duke.

The Duke is a snobby Brit who has nothing but contempt for American women who come to England to snag themselves a husband and a title.

The Duchess, who had a rough past that she kept a secret, was forced to marry the Duke of Rothbury out of duty to her family to save the Duke's estate with her dowry.

Tragedy strikes her life once again. Instead of the man she was to marry, a week after the loss of her fiancé, she was forced to marry his brother.

The newly invested Duke married her out of duty but hated her initially. He was blinded to her beauty and wit because of the guilt he felt from his brother's death. He left her and moved to London and was unashamed of his philandering.

It wasn't until he became ill that he unknowingly came home to one of his several country estates only to find his wife, who he hadn't seen in six years, was also there hiding from her shame of being jilted by a man below her station in life.

Being thrown into her vicinity, he slowly realizes what he's been missing. The sparks between them fly, and it gets hot. Both of them attempt to quench the fire; however, they soon realize they have feelings for each other.

Now, he wants her in all ways that a man wants his wife, but she's been burned by him too many times to just give in to his desires. Her fear of him not loving her and giving her the love she needs causes her to resist him. You'll need to read this to find out if the Duchess and Duke get their happily ever after.

The banter between these two is amusing and enjoyable to read. I can't count the number of times I laughed out loud. I recommend this story to anyone who likes to get on an emotional roller coaster. You'll enjoy the ups and downs, struggles and compromises, laughter and tears, love and hate, and everything in between.

To the Author: Your mastery of character and world-building is beyond amazing. I was captivated by your writing from the beginning to the end. Your amusing storytelling and writing of the banter between the Duke and Duchess was my favorite part of this story. Thank you for allowing us into these worlds you create for our amusement.

About the Author: zeen2805 is just your average bespectacled bluestocking who likes to write about headstrong women and their men who give up on trying to fight them. She also loves to use Greek mythologies as metaphors and has published four stories on Wattpad.
