  Alaya Rose Blake was born in 1661 in Paris, France and is the unaffiliated member of the Olympic coven. She is the first and only adoptive sister of Esme and Carlisle Cullen. She is also the adoptive aunt-in-law of Bella Swan and adoptive great-aunt of Renesmee Cullen.
  In her human life, Alaya was very gentle and caring, when she was turned this manifested into an unparalleled compassion that allowed her to perfect her lifestyle as a human-passing vampire, to the point that she is able to resist the temptation of human blood even in large amounts even though she has only partially adopted the "vegetarian" lifestyle of her adoptive family.

Early Life
"Rosie was born in Paris, in the 1660s she believes. Time wasn't marked as accurately then, for the common people anyway." - Carlisle on Alaya.
   Alaya Blake was the daughter of a French doctor. She was born sometimes in the 1660s in Paris, during a time of religious turmoil. Her mother was put to death during her infancy. Her father was a compassionate man who gave everyone he encountered the best care. Many times, however, he would lose his patients due to the diseases of the time. As her father aged, Alaya took over the practice. She was more gentle than he was, and intelligent enough to invent more accurate techniques of care. After almost 10 years of taking over the practice, Alaya had gotten pregnant and contracted tuberculosis. She was found ten weeks later by a vampire after miscarrying and close to passing due to the disease. She emerged three days late as a vampire. Alaya was terrified by what she had become and her new inability to control her urges that she had tried various ways to reverse her transformation. Eventually, she was so desperate for blood that she had drained diseases rates on ships set for a different country. She found that her hunger for human blood could be subdued due to this method and she considered it much more humane.
   Alaya found new life in this fact and over the course of two centuries was able to harness her ability to control her bloodlust and get back to as normal as she possibly could while taking care of patients. During the two centuries, Alaya traveled the world and studied various subjects to keep herself knowledgeable on any and all current events. As a result of this, Alaya was able to expand on the practice handed down to her by her father. One of the first vampires she had met after her transformation was Aro, whom after a show of her abilities and knowledge, offered her a place to stay at Volterra. She stayed with the Volturi for a long time and during that time she had met Carlisle. They were both born and changed around the same time so she considered him like a brother and a link to her humanity. She was always against the Volturi attempting to convert Carlisle to go to his "natural" food source, but always stayed quiet and watched to decide how strong Carlisle was while figuring out how much influence the Volturi had. Alaya followed Carlisle out of the Volturi fifteen years later, returning to Paris where she had reconnected with the descendants of her aunts and uncles while starting her own school and hospital for those in need.
   In 1921, after the transformations of Edward and Esme, Alaya had finally reconnected with Carlisle after saving her from losing her humanity due to her bloodlust. After a long discussion of what they had been up to for all those years apart and what they were doing now, Alaya had decided to partially join his growing family, happy to have somewhere to call home and not be alone anymore.
   Alaya stayed with the Cullens for many years, moving with them to Forks, Washington where she had stayed neutral and relatively out of the way, befriending the Quileute tribe and helping them in any and every way she possibly could, making her the only member of the Cullens not included in the treaty due to her sad and gentle demeanor.
Physical Appearance
"Then a woman walked around the corner, and my mouth fell open. She was young, she was brunette... and she was more gorgeous than any other movie star I'd seen. She was pale, though, and tired-looking, with circles under her eyes. From Billy's description, this has to be Carlisle's sister." - Sam Uley upon seeing Alaya for the first time.
    Alaya is described as looking like a model. She has mid-back length brown hair, 5'8.5" tall, with a slim, but well-toned frame, sad and gentle eyes, and was 23 when she was changed. She is described as looking like a movie star and Sam Uley said that many of the werewolves cannot concentrate on their tasks at hand when she is around. But as soon as Alaya was settled and outperformed them, Sam said that the distracted wolves were quick to go back to work. Alaya is slim but muscular and still has the French accent from her youth, but can speak with a flawless American accent when she tries to. It is also stated in Breaking Dawn that her beauty outshines her older brother, Carlisle. Her original eye color was blue before turning.
Personality
   Alaya's most prominent personality trait is her compassion, which is what prompted her to control her bloodlust and use her capabilities to help people in need instead of killing them.
   Her loneliness in the years before she met Carlisle and her love for others also indicates that, like Carlisle, she is very family-motivated. Alaya is also very patient, but also very judgmental. She has a passion for medicine, reading, and gardening. She is also very curious about the unknown, such as the differences between werewolves and vampires.
    Her gentle but analytical nature has allowed her to make many allies, ranging from fellow vampires to humans and even werewolves, over the centuries. For a time, she was even willing to tolerate life amongst the Volturi with Carlisle, despite the marked contrast between her compassion and gentleness and Aro's callous disregard for human life.
    In the book The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, Bree explained that she knew that her surrender wouldn't hold the second that Alaya laid eyes on her. She knew that she would be at risk for putting the Cullens in danger and accepted her fate, eternally grateful for her kindness.
Powers and Abilities

     Alaya fully believes that the gifts that certain vampires obtain are from their previous human lives so that they are not completely detached from their former selves. Alaya is also immortal, and has spent centuries perfecting her knowledge on anything from plants to genetics to languages to history and cultures, becoming a well-versed woman. Unlike kost vampires, after 300 years of practice she is no longer ravaged by the scent of human blood, even though she still drinks it when starving but keeps it under control with animal blood here and there, and is able to use it to help her in the human world, therefore turning her "curse" to her advantage. She also believes that every vampire's strongest ability is enhanced during the transformation. What she brought into her new life was her incomparable gentleness and compassion for every living thing, which was what prompted her to control her diet in the first place. She also uses her gift and sense of smell to locate anyone who may need assistance.
    Despite her naturally gentle and compassionate personality and superior control over her instincts, she is also quite adapted in combat like her adopted family.
