Welcome to Howler's Den
"This is all he is giving us?" Derek asks as he flips through the skinny folder.
"That's all the Alpha has on the subject." I inform him, leaning back on the bed.
I'm sitting next to Greyson and Leo while Derek and Rina each sit on separate chairs. Rina is in front of the flat screen while Derek is in his usual spot at his desk. Luckily they were all willing to suspend their video game time to focus on the new mission.
Derek grunts, "this file literally only gives me Harvey's old pack, which was the Juno pack, his age, and a few pictures of him."
"I know it's not much but-" I start to say when Greyson cuts me off.
"The Juno pack?" He asks, "Isn't that the pack that you guys attacked and destroyed like ten years ago?"
"Ten years ago?" Derek asks himself.
He spins around in his wheely chair and starts clicking his keyboard.
The Juno pack? I don't recall that name, but at that point I was young. I had no business knowing the things my pack did. My father never shared any important information with me until I became the Vice leader of the squad. That was the only time I really had some value to him. The only time he was proud; until Trinity came along and stole him from us.
"Wow," Derek states as his clicking slows down, "Greyson good call. We managed to kill that whole pack off besides a few people. Harvey being one of them. That must be the reason he is a rogue, because we destroyed his pack."
"We killed off a whole pack?" I ask surprised.
I mean I have heard about packs attacking one another and fighting over territory and for dominance, but killing a whole pack? My stomach turns a bit at the thought. All those innocent people...
"Yeah," Derek states, "This isn't the first time either Lucia. You should know that as the Beta's daughter."
I can feel my cheeks grow pink, "Well he never really shared anything with me. He left my mom and I in the dark about most things."
He shrugs, "Well I guess it doesn't really matter now. As long as you know about it. But now that I'm looking, it appears that Harvey was the Alpha's second son. No wonder he is so strong and such a big threat to our pack."
I hear a small giggle. "Wow! Good job Greyson for being able to fend off an Alpha's son!" Rina says happily from her seat. She is still holding a controller in her hand.
From the corner of my eye, I see Leo glance at Greyson. He looks a little grumpy from Rina's comment. Is this the jealousy thing that Mom was talking about? If so, then that means Leo's and Rina's relationship is improving. The face that Leo is making is so cute. It makes me want to laugh at his adorableness, but Greyson already scolded me for emasculating him the other day. Looks like I will have to stay quiet this time.
Greyson laughs, "Yeah well the adrenaline really kicked in when my wolf knew we were in trouble."
I roll my eyes and add, "Oh stop being so modest Greyson."
"I'm not being modest!" He quickly defends himself.
Rina and I giggle, "Sure, sure. Whatever you say macho man," I add with a wink.
He grunts and makes a little pouty face. The contrast between his dark hair and bright emerald eyes makes him that much more handsome. His sad little face is adorable though. It's so cute that I just want to kiss him on those pouty lips.
Wait. Hold up.
Why am I thinking like that? Especially now. We are in front of a bunch of people! Honestly, what is wrong with my head lately? It's freaking me out.
"No way!" Derek exclaims excitedly, interupting my jumbled up thoughts, "Guys, I was scrolling through the members of our pack, and one of them used to be a part of the Juno pack."
Oh yeah, I almost forgot that everyone in our pack has a different background.
"Well who is it?" I ask impatiently.
I can't believe we are already getting a lead on this. I thought with the little information we had, it would atleast take us a few days to even get hints on how to progress the mission. Leave it to Derek to get things done fast! I love having a genius on the team. Makes my life ten times easier.
"The name is," He reads the screen carefully as he pronounces the name, "Catalina Barnes? Has anyone heard of her before?"
Catalina Barnes? Huh, the first name sounds familiar but I just can't place it.
"Catalina?" Greyson cuts in, "if she works as a service girl, I think Lucia and I met her this morning."
My eyes snap up shocked.
Oh. My. God.
That bitch is the one we are looking for? No way. Who would have thought we would ever need help from a skank like her?
"Oh good so you're already acquainted with her. I guess that makes this process easier. You and Greyson might as well head over there now to talk to her." Derek adds from the desk, still fiddling with his keyboard.
"Acquainted?" I shout angrily, "I saved her ass this morning and then she started bitching at me! There is no way in hell I am talking to that skank again."
-----------
I sigh as Greyson and I walk down the hallway. "How the hell did I get dragged into this?" I complain.
We are walking down a corridor that is rather unfamiliar to me. Instead of the walls being their normal brown color, they are a bright hot pink. It's so flashy. I feel as though I need sunglasses to even walk straight. The floor, luckily, is just normal wood. It helps subdue the brightness of the walls.
"Derek said it was either you and me who came down here to question her or Ruben and Raymond." He adds, "Then you angrily freaked out on him then said you would do it."
Well duh. If Raymond and Ruben came down here, they would get side-tracked. They think I'm so clueless, but I can put two and two together. The fact that I heard girls giggling in their room means that they have used the service. That also means that they would probably know who Catalina is, and want to talk to her while being served by her... The thought just made me sick.
I groan, "I know what happened Grey. I was being facetious."
He laughs, "Well you asked."
Just then we reach an extravagant doorway. A giant sign above the door reads, 'Howler's Den' in flashy neon letters. Next to the sign is a neon siloette of a stripper who's leg keeps flashing between being raised up and lowered down. Black curtains dangle down from the inside of the doorway, blocking our view from what lies inside.
In front of the doorway is a black podium. It is empty but it looks as if someone should be there. Next to the podium on the wall is a menu. Huh. I didn't know this was a restaurant as well.
"Well this is interesting," Greyson points out as we come to a stop.
"You're telling me..." I add as I look at all the gaudy decor.
This is the first time I have ever been down here. Honestly, it's creeping me out how girly and bright they are trying to make everything. At this point, I think I hate the way they designed this place more than I hate the skanky genie outfits they wear.
"So what, do we just go in?" He asks and points his thumb toward the doorway.
Shrugging casually I add, "Might as well. She must be in there."
I take a step toward the door when suddenly the black curtain flies open and an older woman comes sprinting out. Before the curtain full closes, I catch a glimpse of sparkling and flashing lights of all colors. Oh god, the inside appears to be worse than the entrance!
"Oh my!" The woman jumps to the side surprised by our presence.
"Uh, hi." I add nervously to her as she catches her breath.
The woman has poofy red hair, but clearly she thinks it is stylish. Her makeup is overdone with hot pink eyeshadow, her mascara is clumpy and overused, and her blush makes her look like a clown. I wonder if this was the fashion back in the day? Anyway, her outfit is just like the other outfits I see the service girls' wearing. The only difference is that at her age, she should not be wearing such revealing clothes. It's a bit repulsive if you ask me.
Greyson steps up next to me, "Excuse me, do you know where I can find Catalina?" he asks her very politely.
The woman's eyes switch between the two of us before they land on Greyson. She immedietly smiles. It's the kind of smile that you know she is accustomed to using. It's completely forced, but she does a good job at hiding the fact that she is feigning it.
"I'm sorry Catalina isn't taking personal appointments today. Can I schedule you to one of our other girls, they are all very good at what they do?" Before he has a chance to answer she turns to me and glares, "Also, my sincerest apologies about our incompatent staff. Speaking of which, why are you not in uniform missy?"
Woah. Woah. Woah. Is she seriously talking to me like I'm one of her little whores? I feel anger boil in the pit of my stomach. I could just beat the shit out of her for even thinking I could be one of them. My face grows agry and I feel myself getting pissed. I glare back at her.
"In uniform? I'm not-" I'm cut off by her grabbing onto my arm and pulling me toward the door. I try to fight back but once again, human strength fails to help me.
"I don't want to hear your lame excuses, you're scaring away the clients! Now get in there and change."
A hand grabs onto my left arm, stopping me from being shoved into the flashy room. I whip my head back to see Greyson holding my arm. The lady looks at him shocked and I sigh in relief. He frowns and pulls me toward him. Luckily the woman lets go of my arm and I gently collide with Greyson's chest.
"She's with me." He growls, "And she isn't one of your little service girls."
His eyes seem dark. Llittle butterflies spread through my stomach. I feel slightly embarassed for some reason, yet really happy at the same time. I guess I don't even have to get angry at this woman considering Greyson is doing it for me. A small smile unconcously forms on my lips.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't realize there were girls in the pack who didn't work here and would show up to our club..."
He narrows his eyes angrily, "You can make up for it by telling us where Catalina is."
She looks at him strangely, "But if you need Catalina, why did you bring that girl with you."
I growl, "For your information he didn't bring me, I brought him, you inconsiderate bitch."
Her eyes snap onto mine, "Excuse me, but another comment like that and I will kick you out of here."
"Oh you will kick me-" before I can finish, Greyson's hand covers my mouth, muffling the rest of my sentence.
Ugh.
"Don't mind her," he adds quickly.
The frizzy red haired woman grunts, "Why should I allow you to see our best girl without an appointment? People pay good money to be with her."
"Because we are asking nicely."
"Being nice won't get you very far in this pack."
I feel a growl rumble in his chest from my back. Looks like he is done playing the good guy.
Greyson tone turns angry and strong, "Show me where she is. Now. I'm not going to ask again."
I notice the woman shiver a bit in fear. My body shivers a bit as well. The red haired woman bows slightly.
"I'm sorry sir... right this way," she turns and struts through the black curtain.
I look up to see Greyson smirking, clearly pleased that she is listening to his orders. I grab onto his hand that's covering my mouth and try to pull it off of me. Sadly, I can't move his arm with my own strength, but he complies and returns his hand to his side. Then he looks down at me motioning toward the door, "Shall we?"
------------------------------------
"You seriously interupted me from my work to ask me about my old pack?" Catalina complains while looking me straight in the eye.
Luckily her boss lent us this private room. The walls are all red, along with the bed spread that Catalina is sitting on. The floor is a red carpet. On the walls are these weird black tools. I don't really know why someone would need a large table tennis paddle or a pole in this room, but I guess that really doesn't matter.
"This is important." I mention, placing my hands on my hips. "The Alpha wants to know some things about it."
Her eyes widen, "The Alpha needs information from me?" She sounds honored so I do the only thing logical, I roll my eyes at her.
"Don't be feeling special over there. We just have a few questions."
"Sure, I will answer what I can." then she quickly adds, "For the Alpha and Greyson of course, not for the likes of you."
I growl, "Seriously? You were doing fine, then you switch into bitch mode again! I don't get it!"
She gives me that bitchy know-it-all smirk, "You don't have to get why I hate you."
I growl, oh this girl is something alright, something bitter and vicious.
"Anyway," Greyson cuts into out conversation, "Let's start off with a few simple questions."
She turns to him and smiles, "Of course, that sounds great to me Grey."
I frown at the nickname I gave Greyson. She's acting like they are friends. I want to punch her and ugly that face up. Who does she think she is flirting him like that?
"Okay so first things first, did you know anything about the Alpha and his family?" he asks her.
She thinks for a moment, placing her hand on her chin.
"Honestly," she says, "I didn't know too much about the Alpha, but I was friends with his youngest daughter."
"He had a daughter?" I cut in. Huh, Derek didn't mention that one.
She frowns at me, "Yes two. His youngest daughter was around my age. She was a lot younger than the other siblings so they treasured her and treated her like a princess."
I think for a moment, "How close were you to his daughter?"
"Not too close. But every once in a while we would hang out in a small group. She was too innocent to be my close friend. She never wanted to disobey her dad so she never did anything wrong." She adds with a shrug.
"What about her siblings. Did you know them?" Greyson asks.
Caralina turns to Greyson, her long blonde hair flips off her shoulder as she does so, "No, not really. They were around ten years older than us. The only one who would see us was her brother, but that's because he was so protective of her. " she rolls her eyes, "he and his friend didn't trust us because we had a bad rep."
Brother? No way, could it be?
"Which brother was that?" Greyson asks casually.
I listen intently.
Catalina ponders for a moment before she says, "His name was Hartly or Harvey or something. I don't remeber him too well, but his friend was hot!"
I give her a disgusted look, "Hot? Weren't you a little kid back then?"
Her eyes roll, "I was like fourteen. Guys were hot back then. Especially older men." she sighs, "Too bad he was obsessed with Courtney."
"Courtney, that's the Alpha's daughter?" Greyson asks trying to put the pieces together.
"Yup. Oh well, she didn't make it through the invasion so it's not like she's special anymore." I see an evil sparkle in her eye.
That's freaky. She seems almost glad that she died. What kind of person would be glad to see someone they considered a friend, die? This girl must really be evil.
"Hold on, how do you know she didn't make it through the invasion?" Greyson asks watching her reaction.
She smiles, "Well that answer is simple. I managed to escape with my friend Nancy, Courtney's brother, and his hot friend."
"What?" I ask, "Why would you be with Harvey and his friend? That makes absolutely no sense, especially when you said you were friends with Courtney and not Harvey."
Catalina raises an eyebrow at me, "So, you know his name is Harvey huh? Then this interigation must be about him."
I growl, "So what if it is. Answer my question."
She rolls her eyes, "Nancy was my best friend from the pack and she was crushing on Harvey while I was crushing on Rodger."
"I'm assuming Rodger is the best friend?" I ask, interupting her story.
She glares my way. Clearly she is mad I interupted but who gives a crap. I need to take in as much info as possible.
"Yes, now can I finish or do you want to talk all day?"
I groan, "You are so annoying. Just hurry up and finish."
Her eyes roll but she complies, "Well fortunately for us, on the day of the invasion we were out on a little stroll in the woods. We had no idea that the pack was getting attacked. When we returned, we saw nothing but murder. Dead bodies everywhere, laying in pools of blood. It was quite the gory scene. Luckily for me, I was already an orphan at the time, so all this death didn't phase me due to my lack of family in the pack. Nancy on the other hand crumbled. She wouldn't leave her dad's side, even though he was lifeless.
"I met back up with Harvey and Rodger. Both were by Courtney's side. She was in her bed, must have woken up from a nap when the pack killed her because she was still in human form. By the time I was able to convince them to leave, Nancy returned to me, ready to get out of the house."
Catalina sighs and hops off the bed, she starts to stroll around the room, still lost in her memories of the past. Even if she didn't have loved ones in the pack, seeing that at such a young age can really leave an impact on her life. I almost feel bad. Almost.
"We left together, but I could tell anger was festering inside Harvey. He couldn't let go of his family's murder. Rodger too was strongly affected but he knew he had to move on. Anyway, it hit a point where we were just traveling rogues. That's when Nancy was caught and killed by a hunter. I told the boys we need to join a pack and that's when I found you guys. I told then to join but they decided to stay free. So here I am."
So she just joined our pack? I wonder if she knows that we were the ones who killed her last pack. It sounds as if she has no clue. If that's the case, I'm not going to be the one to break the news.
"That's really rough. I'm sorry Catalina." I say honestly as she skims her fingers along the red wall.
Her eyes snap in my direction and she rolls her eyes, "Act like I need your pity."
A frown forms on my lips.
The nerve of this girl!
"Thanks for the information. Just one more quick question" Greyson adds, ignoring the fact that we are fuming.
She smiles, "Sure thing. What's up?"
"What is Rodger's last name and where did you part with them?"
She places her right hand on her hip, and stops stalking around the room.
"His last name is Zitoli and I left them a couple of towns over. South Portland I believe it was. They didn't want to be too close to the packs so they probably headed to the city where there is nuetral ground." She answers him.
Surprisingly, she is being a lot of help. I can't wait to get this information to Derek. He will have a field day with all of this stuff.
"Thanks Catalina." Greyson says with a smile.
"Please," she says as she steps in front of him "call me Cat." she winks and pats his chest as she walks toward the door.
I feel a growl rumble in my chest but I hold it back. She does this with all guys. No reason to get mad... right?
Her long hair swishes from side to side. When she finally gets to the door, she turns in our direction. The little beads on her pink genie outfit jingle as she faces us. She gives Greyson a huge smile.
"If you have anymore questions, please feel free to come by again."
"Thanks," he responds.
She giggles, "No problem Grey, just don't bring that thing with you next time. We could have more fun just the two of us." she turns and walks out the door
My face goes bright red in anger. I can't hold back any longer as I shout, "I'm not a thing you bitch!"
All we hear is giggling as the door closes behind her, leaving Greyson and me alone in the room. My blood is still boiling from her comments. The thing is, I can't tell if I'm more angry at the fact that she called me a thing or the fact that she basically told Greyson to come again as a customer.
"Hey," I hear as a weight plops onto my head. Small tingles spread as Greyson's deep voice adds, "Are you okay?"
His hand comforts my pulsing veins, and I feel myself begin to cool down. It's like he is some type of magician. He can so easily calm me. It's unbelievable.
"Yeah, I'm fine. She just gets under my skin so bad."
He laughs, "She tries to. Don't let it get to you. On the bright side, we got a lot of information from her. Derek will be pleased."
I smile, "That's true. The Alpha will be impressed to see how fast we were able to gather information too. Although Damien will probably take credit for all of it...."
"Don't think too much about him. He would be nothing if you weren't a part of this team. You do an amazing job as leader and if neither the Alpha nor your dad sees it, then they aren't even worth impressing."
My heart beats rapidly at every word. He is being so sweet. I'm not used to this kind of treatment. Usually people won't say anything bad about the higher ups, but Greyson is different. He is more honest, which is something I surprisingly like. I'm so used to lies and people turning a blind eye toward the wrong doings of the Alpha and his son.
"Thanks Greyson," I can't help the shy smile from forming on my face as I look toward the ground.
It's odd, the idea that Greyson could be proud of me makes my heart almost jump out of my chest. The feeling is uncomfortable but I love it at the same time. Maybe I am starting to have more than just a crush on this guy. Is it possible to be falling in love with someone so soon? Is that what this feeling is? Love?
