First Mission!
"Lucia what the hell!" I faintly hear as I dig my head deeper into my pillow.
Why are people so loud in the morning? Can't they tell that I am exhausted from my Mom lecturing me all night?
"Get up Lucia! You said to be up by seven and now it's seven fifteen."
My eyes shoot open. Shit, I forgot to set my alarm for the mission. I roll over and lean up to look at my intruders. I see Ruben, Raymond and Greyson standing at my door.
"I am so sorry. I forgot to set my alarm." I announce, shocked at myself as I hop out of my bed and scurry over to my closet. "Thanks for coming to get me."
"No problem. We know that Damien might be coming on the mission today and when I saw that you weren't upstairs already, I knew something was off." Raymond says to me.
"And this is why you are my favorite twin." I add happily.
"Hey! That's mean, I noticed too!" Ruben cuts in.
I laugh as I grab my clothes from my closet. Poor Ruben. He tries so hard, but Raymond has a sweet spot in my heart. He has been my closest friend since we were young.
I turn on my heels and walk toward my door which is being blocked by the three boys. Unconsciously I glance at Greyson who happens to be staring at me. My mind flashes to last night and I remember mom's lessons. I quickly shake my head. Now is so not the time to be thinking about this.
"Excuse me," I say as I walk past them and towards my bathroom, "I am going to change. I will meet you guys upstairs in a few minutes. Thank you so much."
"No problem." Raymond adds. "We will see you up there."
I wave them off as they exit my suite. I sigh and close the bathroom door behind me. Oh what would I do without them sometimes? If it is true that Damien is going on the mission today, then I need to make sure I don't fuck anything up. He gets pissed at me for the smallest things, and as long as I don't screw up, he won't get mad.
I quickly toss off my baggy t-shirt and shorts, throwing them into the hamper. I slide on my jeans, followed by my bra and my nice blouse. I need to look good today considering I am playing one of the main roles in our mission. I quickly run back to my room and grab my nice sweater and large purse. I glance at myself in the mirror and notice that I look just fine. Luckily for me, my natural hair has nice waves to it and I don't need to maintain it to make it look nice.
I scurry out of my room and out the suite.
It takes me a minute to get to the kitchen. When I walk through the doorway I see my team scattered around the room making breakfast. Well, everyone besides Damien that is.
"What's up team captain?" Raymond asks happily as I approach him.
I smile, "Nothing. Where is Damien at?" I ask quietly.
He shrugs, "No idea. I thought he was coming today, but we haven't seen any sign of him."
I sigh and grab the bread off of the counter. I slide two pieces out and pop them into the toaster. "Well, we need to get the plan together. Whether or not he is here at this point doesn't matter, I suppose."
I walk over to the fridge and pull out the jelly. I grab a knife from the drawer and a plate from the cabinet.
"Derek, can we get the low down on what we are doing today?" I ask.
I see Leo and Greyson plop down into the seats next to Derek at the kitchen table. They stare at him intently, and I notice Ruben and Raymond even paying close attention. Derek relaxes back in his seat and pulls out a small sheet of paper he had crumpled in his pocket. He pushed his glasses up slightly and clears his throat.
"Sure thing. Well for starters, our main goal of the day is to steal from the local jewelry shop."
"We are stealing jewelry?" Leo cuts in worriedly.
I laugh at his innocence and cut in, "Uh yeah. This is one of the less interesting things we do. But pay close attention."
Leo glances at me apologetically, "Oh... my bad."
I nod toward Derek and allow him to continue, "So for starters, we need to get into the store. Lucia that's where you come in. We were going to send Damien in as your partner, but since he isn't here we are going to have to send in a new guy." Derek glances up at Greyson, "Are you up for the task?"
Greyson lets out a quick laugh, "I just have to walk into the store?"
"It's more like you need to look interested in buying some of their items. That's why I'm sending you in with Lucia. You two are going to be acting like a couple who want to get an engagement ring. That's where most of their expensive jewels are."
"Oh," He says and glances over at me with a smirk. I blush a bit and quickly avert my eyes. "So pretty much we will be the ones taking the jewelry?"
"Precisely." Derek adds and glances down at his paper. "Now, once you two get into the store and get over to the expensive section. You will notify me. This is where Raymond comes into play. He needs to create a distraction. There is an empty Warehouse across the street. you will cause a small explosion on the inside. If everything works according to plan, this boom will start a fire and hopefully the commotion will cause everyone to leave the store. Well everyone besides Lucia and Greyson that is. At this point you two will take as much as possible and scurry away when I tell you to."
"Well this all sounds great, but aren't there cameras on the inside of the store?" Leo adds.
"Yes, but I have that handled. I hacked into the store's camera and have downloaded footage from the past month. I am going to completely shut down the cameras and run the footage I hacked. The security on duty will have no idea what is going on." Derek adds, folding up his little paper and shoving it into his pocket.
"So what will Leo and Ruben be doing?" Greyson adds concerned.
"Ruben will be handling the get away car as always. But to be honest, I think I will send Leo in with Raymond to create the distraction-"
"Explosions! Sick!" Leo exclaims, happiness shining clear in his eyes. I swear he is a child.
I roll my eyes, "It may sound fun Leo, but this is serious. We can't get caught. Do everything Raymond tells you to do. If you don't, the cops could get you, or even worse, those damn hunters could get you. You never know when they are on our trail." I add.
"It's true." Ruben cuts in, "Just a few weeks ago one of the hunters caught on to our plan to rob a convenient store. They almost caught Raymond as he was leaving."
I see fear creep into Leo's eyes. I walk up to him and give him a confident squeeze of the shoulder.
"Don't worry. We are good with all of this stuff. We can handle a few hunters. Plus there is no way this plan was leaked, so you have nothing to worry about. Just listen to Raymond." I tell him honestly. He looks up at me and nods his head.
A few moments later I hear my toast pop and I skip over to the machine. I spread the jelly with my knife and begin to munch on my toast. Mmm, the sweet taste of warm toast and jelly.
"I say we leave in about ten minutes." Derek adds.
"I agree." I cut in, "We need to have time to drop Greyson and myself off at the front of town so we can walk to the store. After that is done, Ruben will immediately drive Leo and Raymond to the back of the empty Warehouse. Once everyone is in place, we will enter the premise and start the mission."
Everyone nods in agreement. We quickly finish our breakfast and head out to the van. Ruben scoots to the front of the car, to the drivers seat while the rest of us file into the back. I sit in my normal spot. Derek gets situated in his seat next to his computer. He scurries through his belongings and scoops out a few ear buds. He tosses me one and I catch it mid air.
"Thanks Derek." I add. I tuck the piece into my ear and allow my hair to flop over it.
Greyson sits down next to me.
"So where is my ear piece?" He asks.
I laugh, "You don't get one."
"What? Why not?"
"Well for starters you are an amateur."
He holds his hand to his heart and feigns being hurt. "Ouch."
I laugh, "That, and you don't have hair or a hat to cover it up. You could be easily caught."
"Fair enough."
The van starts up, and soon we are on our way. I lean my head against the moving vehicle and close my eyes. This feeling is so calming and familiar. Just being in this van makes me feel at ease. A weird thought, considering we are about to go on a mission. It's just that this van has been a huge part of my life since I joined the squad. It's almost nostalgic.
"Okay we are here." Ruben cuts in.
My eyes shoot open and I stand from the floor. Greyson follows suite and Raymond flings the sliding door open for us. I quickly hop out, followed by Greyson. I reach up to my ear and click the ear piece on.
"Can you hear me?" Derek says through the bit.
I nod, "Loud and clear."
I turn around and see Derek's pleased smile as the door closes and the van quickly drives away. I look at Greyson with a satisfied grin.
"Are you excited about having a big part in your first mission?" I ask and start to walk toward the town.
He laughs dryly, "I wouldn't exactly use the word excited to describe how I'm feeling."
I glance backward to get a good look at his expression. He appears, sad? I'm confused. Rogues steal all the time, the fact that he gets to be a part of a big scheme like this should be exciting. This boy sure is confusing.
"Didn't you and Leo steal all the time when you were rogues before coming to this pack?" I ask seriously.
He shrugs, "Yeah but only when it was necessary. We never took in great amounts like this."
I sigh and look forward, "Don't let it get to your head too much. Stealing is stealing, whether it is in great or little quantities. Plus the douche bags who run the store are rich anyway. A few pieces of jewelry won't cause them too much distress."
"Is that really how you feel about this whole situation? That it is okay because they are rich?"
I freeze in place.
"Well..." I stop to think, "I guess the thought never really crossed my mind. This is how I was raised to think about the situation. Nothing really seems wrong about it. It's just how our pack manages to stay alive, and it's up to me to contribute to that."
Greyson quietly comes up from behind me and wraps his fingers in mine. My heart pounds a mile a minute in my chest and I can feel my cheeks blaze red. It's so unexpected. I quickly glance up at him shocked. He looks down at me with a smirk and nods his head forward.
"We are practically at the shops. I figured we should start playing the role of the 'couple in love'."
My cheeks heat up even more at the realization that this is all for an act. I must look so stupid to him! Oh god, could this get any worse? Mom told me to flirt with him, not make myself look like an innocent fool!
I let out a small cough and quickly tug him forward, "Of course, I was thinking the same thing..."
He laughs and quickly catches up to my pace, "Sure you were."
I roll my eyes.
As we get into town, walking hand in hand, I finally catch a glimpse of the shop. "Hank's Jewelry" it reads. Well that's original.
"We are about to enter the premises, is everyone in place?" I whisper to my ear piece.
"Yes ma'am. We just dropped Leo and Raymond off. We will be waiting in the nearby gas station for your signal."
"Sounds good. Wait for the code words."
"You got it."
With that, he clicks off. I turn toward the front of the store and smile. Well here goes nothing.
I'm about to open the door, when I feel a gentle tug on my hand. Glancing to my right, I see Greyson step in front of me and gracefully open the door for me.
I smile, pleased with his actions and add, "Thanks babe."
"No problem dear."
I giggle and we walk through the door, smiling like a couple. As we enter, I notice a few customers. An old lady who is eyeing a gold necklaces, and a mother carrying a child in her arms, glancing at silver watches. A young woman, about twenty or so, behind the counter notices our arrival.
She tosses her perfectly curled ombre hair over her shoulder and says, "Good afternoon and welcome to Hank's Jewelry. Can I help you with anything?"
I smile and gently pull Greyson up to the glass counter in front of me. I look into the woman's bright blue eyes and say, "Actually yes. We are here to look at engagement rings."
Her eyes widen in excitement, "Engagement rings?" she glances between the two of us, and I subtly lean into Greyson to show our closeness.
"Yup. Do you have any recommendations?" I ask and glance down through the glass, observing all of the rings in front of me. Damn, these all look really expensive.
"Well," she says and taps her nails on the glass, "What is the price range you were thinking?"
I lift my head up and glance at Greyson with a pair of puppy dog eyes. He smirks at me and pulls me into a hug from behind. Glancing at the saleswoman he adds, "Let's just say my girl deserves the best."
She giggles and bats her lashes, "Well aren't you the sweetest thing." she leans slightly forward on the glass, "Where can I find myself a guy like you."
Her eyes bear into his, and I cough slightly annoyed. She glances in my direction quickly and plasters on her fake salesmen smile.
"Right this way, I have the perfect selection for the two of you."
She slides her hand along the glass counter as she walks us to the other side of the store. We stop in front of a large display of rings with diamonds the size of pebbles. Oh boy.
"This is our newest collection of engagement rings. These are specially designed for our store. Do any of them spark your interest?" She asks and glances up at me.
"Hmm," I say and lean over the glass to observe the collection, "this one." Pointing to a really pretty ring with a giant diamond plastered on top. It looks really expensive and it's lined with even more diamonds on its sides. I glance up into Greyson's eyes, "what do you think?"
He observes it and nods, "I think its a good place to start."
I smile giddily and look at the saleswoman, "May I try it on?"
I know they work on commission, so I can see the dollar bills sparkling in her eyes. "Of course! My name is Ginger, by the way. Let me just grab the key."
"Okay sounds great, thank you Ginger." I add happily.
She giggles and skips off to the back room. I turn around completely to face to Greyson with a smirk and lean my back against the glass counter. He looks down at me and I reach out, grabbing his shirt in my hand and pulling him closer.
Glancing up into his eyes, he gives me a curious look.
"Babe, thanks for taking me to look at engagement rings. You sure know how to treat a woman right." I know this all seems like an act, but something in my mind is telling me that I am enjoying this a tad more than I should.
He leans in closer and raises an eyebrow. "Only the best for the best, sweetheart."
Giggling I add, "You're too sweet."
I hear a gentle cough sound from behind us. I peak over my shoulder in a cute manor and act as if I had no idea Ginger was standing there.
"Oh I'm sorry." I say as her cheeks turn a slight shade of pink, most likely taken aback by our PDA.
"Oh it's fine. I'm rather jealous of the two of you." She unlocks the glass door and reaches in to grab a ring, "This was the one you wanted to try, correct?" She asks as she pulls out the designated ring of my choice.
Of course, she knows that this is the ring I wanted to try. So I smile, my fake and in love smile, as I nod in agreement.
"That would be the one."
She hands the ring over to me gently. I slip the little silver piece onto my left hand ring finger. It's a little large, but all in all, it looks good I guess. I've never been a fan of jewelry, so I'm not overly impressed.
I glance up at Greyson with a huge smile, "I love it."
He smirks at my comment, "It looks perfect on you babe. Are you sure you don't want to try on any-"
A loud bang erupts from across the street. Loud shrieks and cries explode from the outside and everyone on the store jumps on guard. Chaos of people screaming and running overwhelm the small town.
"What the hell was that?" One of the man employees shouts as he runs for the door.
Another bang blasts through the air. People outside look frantic as they run over to the abandoned warehouse. Ginger's eyes are wide in terror. Her and the costumers in the store run out into the streets, followed by the other employees. Greyson and I follow them to the door as they leave, watching the chaos unfold before our very eyes. I can see smoke and steam shooting across the street from the abandoned warehouse.
Greyson catches my arm, "They all left, should we start now?"
I nod in agreement as we quickly disperse behind the counter. I flop my bag onto the table, opening it wide. We grab as many rings and pieces of jewelry as we can get our hands on.
Another bang followed by the cries of the people on the streets is heard. I smile to myself. I wonder how many explosives we got for this one job. Either way, they are doing wonders.
As I reach for the more expensive rings, I can hear sirens. Suddenly, a fuzzy voice clicks into my ear.
"Lucia, get out now. Cops and Firemen are on their way, we are getting Leo and Raymond. We will scoop you up on the street past the shops. Be careful."
"Got it, thanks Derek." I reply quickly.
Greyson gives me a questioning look as he stuffs a few necklaces into the bag.
"We have to go, cops must have been close." I say.
"Alright, let's go then."
He closes the bag up and hands it to me. He quickly guides me to the door as I toss my purse over my shoulder. Quietly we exit the store and glance out at the huge commotion occurring before us. Around fifty people are lingering across the street from the warehouse that has smoke pouring out its windows.
If there is one thing I have learned, it's to never stay at the scene of the crime for too long, and sure as hell never return. I tug on Greyson's shirt and he complies to my wishes, following me away from the disaster. He slips his arm over my shoulder to make us seem like a couple still, you can never be too careful. Can't say I hate it either. I guess I'm really glad Damien didn't come today. I would have felt weird faking a couple with him as my significant other.
We follow the sidewalk away from the shop. Sirens, cops and fireman pour into the town as we go. The place is becoming littered with the type of authority I despise.
After a block or two, I see the familiar gleam of our get-away car. Ruben pulls up in front of us and the side door flings open roughly. We quickly climb and hop in. Raymond shuts the door as I kneel in my normal spot on the ground. The van takes off, and soon we are on the move, back to the pack house.
"Well that went smoothly." I announce and I drop my bag to the floor. "Good job team."
Derek laughs, "It could have gone better if the cops weren't all in the station. They got here so fast. It's unbelievable."
"We were still able to get a lot." Greyson states as he sits on the ground next to me.
"What did you get?" Leo asks excitedly and creeps over my shoulder.
I roll my eyes, but strangely his attitude isn't actually annoying me, "Obviously jewelry. What else would we get from a jewelry store?"
"Oh... right, my bad." He says disappointed.
I reach out and pinch his cheek gently, "aw don't get sad."
He grunts and swats my hand away, "Stop that. I'm not a child."
I laugh, "Sure you aren't."
"I love how well you two get along and all, but what did you actually manage to grab in there." Raymond cuts in.
"Well we managed to grab most the expensive engagement rings, and I saw that Greyson got some necklaces and bracelets. So we should be pretty well off. Most of these things cost way more than a couple grand a piece." I say as I go through the bag myself.
"A couple grand for one piece of jewelry?" Ruben adds from the front of the van.
"Yup," I add and pop the 'p'. "I don't understand it either, but it is what it is. Let's just get this to the Alpha and get our fair share."
"Agreed." They say as we continue the trek all the way back to the pack house.
