Finding Friends in Odd Places

Brendan is questioned for hours. My father taking down all of the notes while Rina and I sit quietly and listen. Rosemary is constrained by one of the guards and the little girl sits quietly next to her, her arms held tightly by the other guard.

Through the interrogation we found that Brendan is one of the leaders of the Werewolf Hunters. Their main target is our rogue pack. Although they don't know the exact location of our pack house, they do know the large woods we run around in. There are traps set up everywhere. We found out several names and locations of other hunters and which parts of the woods they are designated to set traps in.

"Well Brendan, it looks like that is all we needed to know." Alpha says to him.

Brendan sighs, clearly disappointed in himself, but what was he supposed to do with his loved ones threatened?

"Will you release us now?" Brendan says.

The Alpha laughs, "Release you? Where did you get that idea from? You wanted to play the hard way, and like I said, someone is going to die today."

My heartbeat sputters a million miles per hour in my chest. He has to be kidding, right? Brendan answered all of his questions. What is the use of killing him?

"I did everything you told me!" Brendan yells at the Alpha.

Alpha Serg approaches him with a sick smirk, "Thank you for that, but there is no way I can allow two of the strongest hunters to continue killing my pack. I didn't become Alpha by simply releasing hunters back into the world."

"You bastard, we had a deal!" Brendan says as he struggles furiously in the chair.

"We made no such deal."

In one swift motion, the Alpha slits his throat. Blood pouring out as I hear a small quick gurgle from Brendan before his head tilts back lifeless.

As the Alpha goes to clean his knife, Rosemary releases a blood curdling scream. I can feel her pain and agony as she charges and manages to escape the guard's grip. She heads straight for the Alpha.

My father is about to jump out and defend him, when Serg whips around and stabs the crazed woman directly in the heart. She staggers back a bit, then she collapses to the floor, dripping in her own blood.

My hand shoots to my mouth, shocked as the little girl screams, "Mommy!"

Rosemary manages to crawl to Brendan's corpse, dragging her body over her blood. Leaving a crimson trail as she curls against his legs, hugging them tightly. Her eyes fading as she turns to her daughter, "I'm sorry," she mouths as she hits her limit, falling silent onto the reddened concrete. Blood pooling around the two of them.

The little girl bursts into tears.

The Alpha walks over to the dead corpses and kicks Rosemary onto her back with his foot. He pulls the knife from her chest and calmly cleans it off on his shirt, staining it a crimson red.

He glances in the little girl's direction as she wails. She looks to be around 5 years old, and she has already seen her parents killed before her eyes.

The Alpha approaches her with the knife in his hand. As she sees him coming her voice dulls and she quiets down. Terrified, she tires to get away but the guard holds her in place.

The Alpha bends down and holds the knife towards her. I feel a small growl grow in my chest, he can't do this, she is a small girl!

I go to spring at him, when my arm is caught by Rina. I look at her with wild and desperate eyes. She just quietly shakes her head at me, pulling me back to the wall.

How can she let this happen? My heart pounds and my hands begin to sweat.

"Listen little girl," The Alpha says, "I have a daughter of my own, so hurting you is not on my to-do list. So stop crying and nothing will happen to you. Do you hear me?"

She slowly nods her head with terrified eyes and I feel relief flood my system. Thank god. He isn't going to hurt her.

"Rina, Lucia, come here." The Alpha commands as he stands.

I watch as Rina approaches slowly, I follow her every move as we reach the Alpha. He looks down at Rina.

"You know what to do." He says.

"Yes sir."

She tucks her hair behind her ears and bends down so she is at the same level as the little girl. I watch as Rina smiles gently. The girl noticeably relaxes.

"Hi, what's your name sweetie?" Rina asks.

I watch as the Alpha walks away with the Beta. Before they leave, the Alpha barks an order at both guards. One goes to the bodies, starting to clean, while the other comes and stands behind me and Rina. With that last thing, they leave us in the cell.

"Jada," she adds nervously, tears welling in her eyes.

"Well Jada, I want you to close your eyes and pretend non of this ever happened. Count to ten. By the time you're done, I can guarantee that all your pain will be taken away, okay?" Rina says gently.

"All the pain will go away...?"

Rina nods.

The little girl sniffles but nods in agreement. Her eyes shut as she begins to count, "One... Two... Three..."

Rina reaches up and touches the girls forehead. Jada's eyes shoot open and she pulls away from Rina nervously.

"Don't worry, I'm helping you. I promise I would never hurt you."

The little girl seems hesitant, but I can see the sincerity in Rina's eyes. Jada must sense the same thing because she quietly nods and obeys Rina's command. Her eyes shut again, and she begins counting as Rina touches her forehead.

"One... Two... Three... Four... Five..." Rina's finger begins to let off a red glow and Jada's counting gets slower, "Six........ Seven............. Ei......"

Jada collapses forward into Rina's arms. She catches her gently, but I notice some sweat dripping from Rina's face, and she looks completely drained of energy.

"What the hell just happened!" I shout, jumping forward to check Jada's pulse.

Luckily, her heart is beating steady. She just appears to be in a deep sleep. I glance at Rina who is exhausted. I scoop Jada from her and cradle her in my arms. My heart aches for this poor girl. She just lost her parents and now Rina pulled some weird stunt? I just don't know what to think anymore.

"Let me take her." The guard says from behind me.

I pull away from him and growl, "Absolutely not. What the hell is wrong with you people? She is just a little girl."

The guard frowns, "I have to take her. Alpha's orders."

I growl but hold her tightly, "I don't care."

"Lucia, give her to him." Rina says, standing from the floor. She appears to have gotten her energy back.

"No, he is just going to dispose of her like they did with her parents." I spit back angrily.

"No he won't." Rina says, "He is going to bring her to an orphanage. They have the car outside waiting and ready for her."

I squint my eyes at the guard and he just nods, as if she is speaking the truth. I glare at Rina, she doesn't appear to be lying but for all I know she could be a great actress.

"And why should I believe that?"

"Because this happens all the time. Why do you think the Alpha asks me to come down here and work for him a lot?"

"So you guys kill people all the time and send their children to orphanages? Yeah, that makes me feel better. Now she is going to go through life thinking about the death of her parents and how much they hate werewolves. What you guys are doing will cause even greater hatred towards our kind." I shout at her. How have they not thought this through?

She shakes her head, "So you really didn't know about me huh?"

"Why do you keep saying that?" I snap back at her.

"Lucia, I'm a brain washer. I have the ability to erase any memory from your head that I want. That's why I'm here. Whenever I delete a memory, it takes a lot out of me and the person I'm erasing from. When I was younger, I used to faint like Jada did just now, but I'm used to it. She will wake up soon with no recollection of her parents or werewolves. If she doesn't leave soon, then she could wake up here and screw up our whole plan. Now please let her go and start a new, happier life." Rina begs.

I stare at her dumbfounded. I have to ponder all this information at once. If all this is true, then she does need to get out of here or she will see werewolves and this dungeon and become scared.

"If what you say is true, then there is a car outside?" I state.

Rina nods, "Yes."

"Then I'm going to take her." I look at the guard, "You are dismissed."

"The Alpha ordered me to do this, I won't leave until my mission is complete." he says sternly.

I roll my eyes and head toward the outside, "Do what you want."

------------------------------------

She wasn't lying, the van, the orphanage, and her powers. It is all the truth. I had no idea that someone could have such an ability.

"How long have you been able to wipe memories from people?" I ask Rina as we stand outside, watching the van take Jada away into the darkness of the night.

"My whole life. I was born this way." She states, watching me carefully.

"Interesting. So you can wipe memories whenever you want from whomever?"

"Yup."

"So if you wanted to, you could erase my memory of what just happened?"

"Technically, yes. Why, do you want me to?"

I roll my eyes, "Of course not, but I just wasn't sure if you had a limit as to how many times you can erase memories in a day."

"My limit is until I faint. The more memories I have to erase or the deeper the memory is ingrained into the brain, the harder it is for me to delete the memory. Cases like those, it might take me a few tries before I can get rid of the whole thing." She says, still eyeing me curiously, as if I'm about to sprint away from her.

"Why do you keep doing that?" I ask.

"Why do I keep doing what?" She asks plainly.

"Looking at me like that. You have been giving me that same puzzling face since we started talking at the library." I state, crossing my arms over my chest and eyeing her carefully.

She seems to be caught off guard by my statement. She looks down and blushes slightly, tucking some hair behind one of her ears.

"Sorry, I don't mean to do that. It's just... I'm not used to people talking to me... Most people are scared of me and run away." She says in a soft tone.

Wow, I guess even people who have special abilities can feel lonely. I had no idea. Well that can explain why she looked confused when I talked to her.

"I won't run away from you," I say. She starts to look up, "I'm not scared of you either. To be honest, I've never had a friend that's a girl so I thought I was being weird when I was talking to you."

Her eyes go wide, "No! You weren't weird at all, I was just startled that you were talking to me. Actually, this is the first real conversation I've had in a long time."

"Wait, really?" I ask surprised.

"Yeah..." she adds shyly.

Well that is unexpected. She is so cute and small, you would think the guys in this pack would eat her for breakfast, you know, in a good way.

"What about your parents?" I ask, surely they have to talk to her.

"They are scared of me..." she adds.

"What? How can they be scared of you? You are their own flesh and blood." Well actually, My father is my own flesh and blood and he easily tossed me to the side.

"I was sent to live in my own room away from them a year after I was born." She sighs and digs her foot nervously into the dirt, I can tell this isn't easy for her to talk about but she is opening up to me anyway, "when I was young, I still had the ability but no control over it. I accidentally erased some of my mom's memory and since then, they haven't come near me..."

I growl, "What jerks." I reach out a place my hand on her shoulder lovingly, "You don't have to worry about me or anyone in my squad being afraid of you Rina."

"You're squad?" She asks.

I laugh, "Yeah, and if I remember correctly, you were invited to join us, but you turned us down."

"Oh! I remember now. I turned it down because I was scared no one would accept me."

"We are really accepting! Trust me, they will love you Rina!" I say excitedly. "Let me introduce you at some point. For now, want to get something to eat?"

"Uh, sure. That sounds good!"

The kitchen is practically empty. There are a couple older men talking at the end of one table and two pregnant women going through the cabinets looking for something to munch on.
I make some mac and cheese for Rina and myself.

I hand her the bowl, and she happily accepts it. Munching on it as we chat. It's weird, having a friend that's a girl. At least I think we are friends now? Is it possible to make a friend this fast?

Anyway, now I can talk about things that I can't with the other guys, such as love and other stuff. Well, not that I really have a love life to talk about, but if and when I do, I know I can talk to Rina about it.

"Oh hey Lucia." I hear, as feet putter into the kitchen.

I turn around and see Leo, Ruben and Derek walking into the room. It was Leo who called out to me.

"Hey guys," I turn to Leo and raise an eyebrow, "Where is the item that was in the box?"

Leo's cheeks turn a bright pink and he scratches his brown hair, "I could only get through eight locks before I gave up... Sorry Lucia."

I laugh, "It's cool, eight is pretty good. When did you and Greyson stop?"

He opens the fridge and pulls out some ham, "I stopped an hour after sunset, but I'm pretty sure Greyson is still out there. He is one stubborn dude."

I glance at the clock and it reads 11:48. Jesus, it is almost midnight! He shouldn't be out there this late, it could be dangerous, especially with hunters.

"Dammit. He needs to come in before something bad happens."

I stand from my chair. As I'm about to leave I freeze. Oops, I almost forgot about Rina!

"Oh hey guys, this is my friend Rina. Ruben, Derek, you guys probably remember her, but Leo this must be your first time meeting her." I turn to Rina, "Sorry, I have to go get my dumb ass squad member from the woods, but these guys are great people. I know you will get along great!"

She looks at me nervously but I just smile with reassurance.

"Hey Rina, it's nice to meet you, I'm Leo." he says happily sticking his hand out to her. She looks at it and touches it to shake it. As soon as their hands connect, they look up and lock eyes with one another.

"Okay, well I've got to go." I say, yet they are still eyeing each other. "Um, alright... Well Leo take good care of her. Bye guys."

I turn and walk out the room. I can't believe Greyson is still out there! What a pain in my ass, making me come get him.

My mind flashes back to earlier in the day when I yelled at him. I feel my face blush red. Shit, I need to apologize for that too. Well this will be fun...
